PS3 imports banned in patent row

European customs officers have been told to seize all shipments of PlayStation 3s (PS3), following a patent row between Sony and LG.

LG has won a 10-day import ban on the games consoles from the civil court of justice in the Hague.

The long-running dispute between the two tech firms centres around the playback facility for Blu-Ray discs.

Basically a row over the Blu-Ray technology by LG is claiming Sony broke copyright patients for playback of Blu-Ray discs.

I thought LG was American.

Now I have a Korean Display and Guitar :iamafag:

Don't get me wrong, I dislike Sony very much, but how can LG even claim this after 5 years? I understand waiting a year or two after release of the PS3 so you can claim the earnings of Sony, but 5 years? Did they just figure this out? Did Sony use LG's designs in the original PS3s?

The lawsuit is actually pretty old. They only just now got the injunction through.

All I have to say is that it sucks to be Sony right now. Nothing but bad PR from all directions.

Plus if LG wins, Sony will have to pay them a certain amount for every PS3 sold, that would be enormously costly.

Well, I have a huge dislike for Sony. If this is the beginning of the end for their primary game platform, it can only lead to reform on their part. However, judging from their past actions, that reform will probably be for the worse, not for the better.

They both like to overprice and milk the cash cow even after it dies. Plus Sony makes crap products. Although, I guess Microsoft isn't to different.
(not saying the PS3 is crappy, just there quality of products in general*)

Sony haven't exactly made themselves the most popular brand in recent years with their music record label (http://torrentfreak.com/sony-music-office-raided-090907/), harassment of various consumers and various removals of functions from hardware via updates.

Yeah, but Microsoft is a bigger, more evil company. Bill Gates even admits it. Plus, as much as I hate paying for music, they do have a right to defend their property you know. I mean, it's still theirs, as much as I hate it too. Other than Valve, who still use DRM via Steam, what companies aren't evil?

In general, Microsoft and Sony are two different beasts, so I don't know how you can like one over the other when they really don't sell the same products aside from a current generation console.

Some of Microsoft's practices may be evil, but their people and quite a few of their product line ups are pretty boss (not to mention, Microsoft Research (http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/)). The same goes for Sony. Valve is pretty strictly game industry based so I don't see how they can be thrown into this company evilness comparison mix. What practices a company uses tends to be based on what they do or what fields they cover.

With that said, Xbox360 supremacy~~

Well, they like to call those gaming consoles, but I declare them phonies.

The Sony hate is coming from them overpricing ALL of their products, which in the past decade have been of worse quality compared to their less expensive competition (TVs, DVD players, phones, computers; you name it, it sucks). They then have the gall to harass customers who BOUGHT (not RENTED...no contract was ever signed) one of their products and then did with it what he wanted. They are presently trying to fabricate a case on a...case...that really has no...ahem...case. I am of course referring to the GeoHotz debacle. This all has absolutely nothing to do with where the company is based.

I was going to buy a Playstaion 3, but after seeing that apparently buying one doesn't mean that I own it, I say fuck them, I'll just keep using my 360 and PC for everything and wait for developers to wise up and see that being platform exclusive really doesn't have any merit.

They do in the same way that the Wii does. Its for casual people who don't care about chainsawing people in half. Its hitting the "fun" market hard, something the 360 and PS3 have mostly failed on for the most part. IMO, the best games I own for my Xbox are NCAA Football, Fable II, and Far Cry 2. They have lasted the longest, and I play them all the time. My sister bought a Wii for her little son to play and for her own enjoyment, and I think I enjoy Mario and Donkey Kong more than Halo or Gears tbh. Just like anytime I look at someones iPhone, I hit that cuberunner icon. They are simply fun, and I think its captured a share of the market that Microsoft and Sony failed to focus on.

well, my original comment was actually intended to be a comical crack in reference to the ps3 being over priced. because we all know what apple has a reputation for in terms of price.

ipad and itouch would be classified as hand helds anyway, not consoles. bah the funniness has been ruined :saddowns:

Well the original ps3 was severly under priced. At the time of its release Blu-ray players were upwards of $800, mostly $1000. With the Ps3, you could get a blu ray player AND gaming console for $600. However, most gamers don't give a fuck about the blu ray (I don't anyway) and it was stupid to pay that kind of money just to play games. But the hard core movie goers/gamers thought it was great. Thus sales tanked.

Like Korn said, both of these companies put out some cool products, granted I like xbox over playstation, but they make other cool stuff. You can't group an entire company and all of its products into one category (except for overpriced).

Also, they don't even support their phones. The xperia x10, which I have, it's an amazing high end phone, with 8mp camera, snapdragon processor and everything. It was barely released a year ago, and yet sony has stopped all software development for it. So no going past android 2.1, even though this phone is capable of going past froyo and beyond. I wouldn't normally have a complaint, cause xda developers are my saviors, but apparently sony has implemented a 1024 bit rsa key and some sort of drm on the bootloader, thereby rendering it uncrackable. Guess what that means? No 100% fully working froyo or gingerbread probably ever cause the guys at xda can't modify the kernel or anything cause the bootloader is so locked down. I shoulda gotten a captivate.....

I still love the phone, but i'm still pissed at sony. Have you seen the xperia arc? It's basically an xperia x10, with a small upgrade for camera, a 0.2 inch bigger screen, and a little more memory. That is not justifiable. Sony must think we are idiots. I'm not buying another sony phone again.

Warsaw
March 2nd, 2011, 09:03 PM
You bought a Sony-Ericsson phone? For shame, they've been churning out crap for ages. I thought the X10 was rather chintzy and underwhelming compared to the HTC and Samsung offerings. Even LG was more compelling at the time.

@n00b: Shit, I totally forgot about that. I can't believe they even thought they would get away with that unnoticed.

That's saying a lot. The 360's Xbox1 emulation isn't all that and a bag of chips (note: I'm not saying you said or implied that). The PS3's PS1/2 capability is even shittier? What the hell, they're not even emulating a different CPU the last I checked!

In reality there is an old Xbox sitting inside the 360. If you put in an old game, the disc gets passed via a conveyor belt into the old drive bay.

Don't talk to me about processor emulation and that jizz :realsmug:

No, 360 Xbox 1 emulation is handled by a miniature talking pterodactyl that, when witnessed emulating, shrugs and says, "It's a living." Flintstones tech... on Modern Marvels.

Sony lost the format war 17+ years ago for that very reason, they wanted people to pay them a fee for every special VHS-like-tape they sold. :/
