1.8 would probably be fun if it didn't crash on me every other minute.

Not diggin the new size upgrade to biomes much either. In my first world, I spawned in a plains and there was desert on three sides with ocean on the fourth. Beyond the deserts were mountains without trees. Needless to say, it was two nights and two deaths before I just made a new world until I spawned somewhere with a tree.

Caboos001

Yeah I'm having issues with crashing as well, not as frequently though. Besides that I have no complaints other than abandon mineshafts are way to big/confusing and villages seem pointless without NPCs to liven them up. I've just been pillaging them for their windows and using them for convenient shelter when exploring.

Anywhere past 200,000 blocks with the new terrain generation is all ocean. Also, farlands don't seem to exist anymore.

It's the new generator. The farther from the center the higher the chance of getting ocean biomes until everything is just one big ocean.

That's pretty lame. I mean, it makes sense, but part of Minecraft is the concept that the world is perpetually automatically generated. There are no limits - not even the map. If they are going to start restricting your explorable area, that sucks.

TM_updates

15 hours still is quite a bit though, combine that with exploring most of the land within a 200 000 radius and you're going to have alot of exploring to do even with this new limit. For me personally I probably still won't ever hit the endless ocean within this limit. But yeah I can understand how some more hardcore players won't like this, the thought of an endless world is just plain cool.

The old minecraft versions did have an end though- the LotR Middle Earth group actually hit it.

Edit: Having looked up the Far Lands, I have no idea what exactly the LotR group hit, but maybe they just counted the beginning of the Farlands as the end of the map. It would be a pity if endless ocean replaced the Far Lands completely. However, since they were just a glitch anyway, the idea of ocean seamlessly blending the edges of the world isn't so bad. Sounds like it would be nice if they were farther off though.

just to be clear, the reason that farlands "glitch" happens is because of the data types used for the variables that control shit like distances. idk if youve ever programmed something using doubles or longs or something, but if the numbers get too big they start oscillating between negative and positive numbers. at least thats what i imagine is going on, i could be wrong. im sure most of you knew that already anyway though.

in terms of oceans, it would be cool if there were like... seas and islands. we have the sea thing already with large bodies of water, but im talking like, two completely disconnected land masses separated by an ocean.

also after playing terraria, like, alot, i have decided it would be cool if the world were a little taller, and there was a hell biome under ground.

No, a tester leaks 1.8 and it spreads like crazy and people bitch and moan that the unofficial release has bugs. They then say why the fuck not and offer the unreleased version as a pre-release since it's pulling in a good amount of bug reports. They fix a lot of bugs and release the 1.8.0 for public beta. Over the next couple of days, they will start fixing bugs in 1.8.1, 1.8.2, and so on.

Ok, so here's the deal...

The Bukkit server we're running right now is loaded with mods and lots of cool buildings. For the most part, it's become a creative server because the traditional ways of playing Minecraft got boring and gay as hell. Minecraft 1.8 actually introduces experience now, so maybe it adds a little more to the survival aspect of the game, but I'm still critical of it. It also adds the new ocean method of terrain generation, which we will most likely NEVER see in the current world on the server.

Each time Minecraft is updated, members ask me to set up a vanilla server so you can all play on it together, before Bukkit and the plugins update to the latest version. If you guys really want the new features and a reliable server to play on, I would consider setting one up. However, what would happen to the current server? Would it become strictly a creative server? Would two separate servers be segregating the players too much?

Also, another important issue to consider is what to do about the current server's world. We have a lot of sweet stuff in it like the rail lines and Sampson's palace (I'm so jelly) that I don't want to get rid of. We could potentially move individual structures to a new world, but things like railways and almost everything underground wouldn't be able to be moved.

If we restart, I'd upload the world for everyone to make schematics of their stuff. Large things would probably have to be divided into smaller chunks, since worldedit doesn't like to paste huge.

Or, once we find a seed, we could use something like mcedit to paste structures in before we start actually playing in the world. I've never really used the program though.

I don't think setting up more than one server would be a good idea. The traffic in the one we have is low enough as it is; two servers would make it even more dead. I think we should restart it and decide (vote?) on whether to have a creative or survival server. Personally, I'd like to see a survival server with no item spawning at all (even admins), or admin editing, and then install one of the economy mods, and maybe some other good mods. An economy system would be especially interesting I think.

I do like creating giant things with an endless amount of materials at my fingertips, but I think the game would be more interesting if it wasn't like that. I wouldn't be opposed to copying over some of the existing structures, though.

Agreed, While I enjoyed building my palace with all these powers; I'd enjoy even more building things just like it with more of a challenge. I miss the looming threat of creepers stalking your building grounds, while annoying, it still adds more flavor to the game. So does the threat of night. Building by day and holding yourself up tight in your fortress or mine, waiting for the crack of dawn.

Everything I build now, while cool, just feels kind of, "bleh" when you realize it was all built with the aid of super pick, god mode, and infinite resources at the flip of a switch. I'm all for a new survival server with imported structures; and I support Kings idea of an economy mod, or something similar. :like:

Same. It's a lot more rewarding when you create something without the aid of super powers.

If/when the server is restarted and changed to survival style, what is everyone's thoughts on installing Mo' Creatures (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/81771-v181-mo-creatures-v213-with-smp/)? I've been aware of the mod for awhile, but I never really read all the way through the thread until now. It's sounds pretty amazing. It's not just a bunch of creatures they threw in the game that look neat but serve no purpose. They drop different items, you can tame some, breed some, ride some, etc. (Edit: Read the section on horses to get an idea of how extensive the addon is)

Those are the type of mods I wouldn't mind seeing added (mods that make the game more interesting as opposed to more easy).

This game is honestly total shit. I have no idea how it's even managed to last as long as it has. It appeals to an incredibly small audience and has practically no objective. Your goal is to survive by mining and building dirt huts? It doesn't even have quests to give meaning to playing. The reason our server died down the past 5 months is because the game has lost all purpose. The only grand goal of the game I could see was to build cool stuff, so I thought I'd just make it easier for you guys to do so with the mods.

IMO, playing legit a total turnoff. It's like...let's say I were to join a server with lots of crazy stuff where people with literally no lives have been building stuff for the last 6 months. I'm like, "WHOA! That's so cool! I want to do something like that!" I would think their dedication to the game is insane (aside from thinking they are total losers); however, when I start thinking about the amount of time it took them with no lives, it goes from "I want to do something like that!" to "wow fuck this gay shit, I'm bored," and I don't even want to try.

If you don't want to use any of the mods because you are up for a lame challenge in your "my wood house is better than your wood house" pissing contest, you don't have to. If you're offended by anyone who gets enjoyment from building big stuff with infinite item mods because they don't want to waste half their time doing miscellaneous bullshit, then play solo.

Of course, all of that just my opinion. This just comes as a surprise to me that people want to waste time mining to waste time building. I refuse to start a server that I personally wouldn't find any enjoyment in. However, if you guys are really sure you want to play the classic way, I'll suggest a compromise. Server ops (people who have the ability to actually control the server; ie me) get WorldEdit permissions. Infinite day would only be enabled if I'm playing and night pisses me off. Creeper environment damage is disabled. Mobs only spawn outdoors or in mines (so if you want to build something cool, you don't need to have torches literally everywhere). Craftbook wouldn't be enabled unless you get incredibly bored of playing classic, which frankly I'm alright with since it's not updated often enough. I can't remember anything else.

e: actually if I used craftbook at all, it would only be for [gate] and [bridge]

king_nothing_
September 22nd, 2011, 12:04 AM
I had more fun with the game when I had to work to get my materials. I enjoyed growing crops, building tree farms, mob farms, elaborate mine shafts, etc. That's half the fun for me. A creative server with limitless material spawning is basically akin to playing SimCity and hex editing your money to $99,999,999. It can still be fun to a degree, but it takes depth away from the game.

An economy system would only work if everyone using it doesn't use item spawners or WorldEdit. If you're that opposed to not using those though, I guess you could bar yourself from using the economy system or from giving anyone other than yourself materials or WorldEdit favors. If you did that, an economy system could still work I suppose.

I'm fine with creeper damage being disabled. No night while you're in the server is fine I guess. No mobs indoors is alright I guess.

I don't know everything about it, I've just watched some videos on it. I think the way most of them work is you set up chests with signs on them, on which you put parameters such as the item you want to sell/buy, how many, and your sell/buy price. Then you just stick the items in there, and anyone can come into your shop or w/e and click on it to buy them at that price. Everyone's balances are recorded, of course.

You can set up lotteries and other stuff as well with it.

I believe these are the most popular (you would use both of them together):

iConomy (http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/iconomy/)
ChestShop (http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/econ-chestshop-3-12-iconomychestshop-chest-shop-for-all-economy-plugins-1-8-support-1060.4150/)

EDIT: There's also a Jobs plugin (nvm, fuckthatplugin) which I guess you would need in order for there to be any wealth generated in the first place.

Start generating good level seeds. I'd prefer to use an original one (not one you find on another site). Another cool plugin:

Residence (http://residencebukkitmod.wikispaces.com/)

Features:

Allows players to define protected areas for themselves.

Individual permissions for each protected area. Land owner can give / deny permissions globally or to other specific players.
Different permissions per land include: move, build, use, pvp, fire, teleport, monsters spawn, damage prevention
Support for group permissions on protections.
Multi-World support.
Teleport system to allow users to teleport to residences.
Collision detection system to prevent residences from overlapping.
Limits to protected size can be set up by the admin.
Limits to number of protected areas per player can be set.
Two ways to select land including using the select command, or using a item to select 2 points.
Messages when you enter / leave a residence. (customizable)
Land "leasing" system which requires users to renew the lease on their protection every X number of days or loose the protection. (off by default, see config file)
Recursive Sub-zoning. Create zones within zones, and then zones within those zones...
TONS of configuration for admins. Customize every single flag that players can or cannot use in the config file, based on their permissions group.
(Optional) IConomy support, can set up cost per X number of blocks protected.
(Optional) Permissions support.
In-game help / commands descriptions

It ties into the iConomy plugin, allowing you to buy, sell, and rent areas. :O

Ok, forget the Jobs plugin. It's a completely unrealistic means of generating wealth. You're getting payed by an invisible/non-existent employer to do tasks which produce nothing for said employer (you're keeping what you're getting paid to produce). It makes no sense. Fuck that.

Here's how it can work: everyone starts with nothing. The admin (who isn't going to actually use the economy) gives himself an infinite or huge amount of currency. He then sets up admin shops (with the ChestShop plugin) to buy an unlimited amount of iron and gold at specific prices. For instance, an iron block could be worth 1 dollar (or w/e), and a gold block could be worth 8 dollars (I think iron is around 8 times as abundant as gold, that's why I picked that ratio). Those two commodities would effectively be (or back) the currency.

EX12693
September 22nd, 2011, 09:35 AM
Maybe the currency shouldn't be actual ores though...
What about something like... slimeballs and Ender pearls?

king_nothing_
September 22nd, 2011, 03:02 PM
It would work fine as ores. You use what you need of it yourself, and turn what you don't need into currency to buy other stuff. It also comes from doing something you're probably going to be doing on a regular basis anyway (mining). IMO it would suck if all the currency was derived from killing slimes and endermen.

I think that iron occurs incredibly more often in 1.8 worlds. Might want to take that into consideration when making currencies.

Ah, ok. If it's not known yet what the numbers are, it may be better to just go with gold. There's less inflation that way anyway. :downs:

Also, if we're going to put in an economy system, the existing buildings that are partially built with very valuable materials that were spawned (gold blocks, diamond blocks, etc.) should not be copied over (or those materials taken out beforehand). People could get rich merely by mining off pieces of their building.

IDK if copying chests over results in their contents being retained, but uh, yeah...that shouldn't happen either.

EDIT: This plugin looks better to me than ChestShop:

VirtualShop (http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/virtualshop/)

"This plugin allows you to put items up for sale in a virtual store with a command and get paid via iConomy only when someone buys them."

Instead of using a bunch of physical chests to sell everything, everything is sold on one big auction house type system that is accessed and used with commands. Seems a lot better to me than using a bunch of chests. It even has a web interface. :O

Stock list:

You can search for specific items as well I believe, so you don't have to go through tons of pages of auctions to find something. Sounds like a really, really good system to me.

Ok, so the economy system is set up now. I'll explain how it works and how to use it.

You start out with no money. Currency is derived from gold ingots. You convert your gold ingots into currency at Admin Shops, which are just signs that say "Admin Shop" on them (there's currently only one, in my house. There will be more later). The conversion rate is 1 gold ingot = 20 dollars. Left-click on the sign to make the conversion.

Commands:

/money -- Shows your balance.
/money pay [name] [amount] -- Send money to another player.

For those of you who know about the VirtualShop we had set up...well forget about it, because it was throwing tons of errors, and it's being removed. Everyone who has stuff listed on it needs to cancel them.

Selling will now be done by ChestShops.

Here's the info on how to use it:

How to create a ChestShop?
- Place a chest, if you haven't already.
- Place a sign 1 block near the chest (for example, above the chest)
- On the sign, write:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11388037/ChestShop/mcsign.png
(Item name can actually be item ID or alias)
First line will be filled in by the plugin automatically.
Price is a combination of buy and sell price.
You have to have B near buy price (people buy from you), and S near sell price (people sell to you).
If you have both B and S, separate them with a colon - :
For example:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11388037/ChestShop/example.png

means that AcrobotPL wants to sell 64 diamonds for 10 currency, and buy them back from you for 5 currency.
Also, if you put "free" instead of price, it is free to buy or sell http://forums.bukkit.org/smilies/happy.gif

- Now, when you finish editing the sign, if LWC is turned on in config, shop will be automatically created.

USING SHOPS
You could buy and sell by right and left clicking the sign for a long time.
Now it's the only way to use the shops.
It's SIMPLE!
Just LEFT-CLICK to SELL to shop, and
RIGHT-CLICK to BUY from shop.
(This can be changed in the config file)

DESTROYING SHOPS
If you want to delete your old shop, simply SNEAK and destroy the sign.
It's that easy =)

STOCKING THE SHOPS
You can either open the chest and stock it up, or click on your own sign - it will open chest's inventory (that way you can have chests not openable by other people for sure http://forums.bukkit.org/smilies/grin.gif)

only gold ingots? not coal, iron, or diamond? or other stuff like wool or something?

jcap
September 26th, 2011, 02:53 AM
Well currently you can get money if people buy stuff from your shops, but there's no direct way to turn coal into cash.

In the future we do plan to allow iron to be turned into cash as well, but we don't know the ratio of gold to iron yet. From what I've seen it seems like there's 20 iron for every 1 gold.

only gold ingots? not coal, iron, or diamond? or other stuff like wool or something?
There would be too much inflation. With just gold, the money supply grows steadily and slowly.

As jcap said, you don't absolutely HAVE to mine gold to get currency; you could just sell stuff to people who do have currency.

Donut
September 26th, 2011, 03:21 PM
well not if you scale the value of the item. like say, like jcap said, theres 20 iron for every 1 gold. 1 gold = 20 dollars, 1 iron = 1 dollar. coal could be like 5 cents or something.

i mean, i see the issue with something as plentiful as coal, but diamond and iron, and maybe other rare shit like apples or something could be traded for money.

when you trade those gold ingots, where does the gold ingot go? is it just gone?

king_nothing_
September 26th, 2011, 03:28 PM
Iron is not very rare at all anymore. And even if we found the exact ratios, it would still inflate the currency faster. It works completely fine the way it is now...there's no need to add a multitude of different things which are directly linked to the currency at a static amount. Let the market determine their prices.

Yes, the gold ingot is gone when you convert it. I've told jcap to make it so you can convert $20 back into one gold ingot as well, but he hasn't as of yet.

EagerYoungSpaceCadet

If you see strange holes in shallow lakes, that was ex-clay.
It's a lot more common now (but found in smaller deposits) and can be only found in shallow lakes (not oceans) - swamps contain massive amounts of it!

Also, that economy system sounds cool, gonna build a shop in the village and sell bricks once I build my house.

king_nothing_
September 28th, 2011, 11:47 PM
The economy system provides players with a means of buying and selling items with other players using currency. It is a completely free market; there are no set prices. The price of any particular item is determined by the seller(s) of the item (if there are any). It is also effectively a gold standard. The currency (dollars) is derived solely from gold ingots. One gold ingot converts into $20.

Commands:

/money -- Shows your balance.
/money pay [name] [amount] -- Sends money to another player.

Converting currency:

You can convert your gold ingots at signs which read:

AdminShop
1
B 20 : S 20
Gold Ingot

The meaning of this sign is that you can sell 1 gold ingot to it for $20, or buy 1 gold ingot from it for $20. These signs can only be created by the server administrator. There will always be one located near the world spawn in the "First Bank of Minecraft," identified by the marker on the map.

To convert 1 gold ingot --> $20, left-click on the sign.
To convert $20 --> 1 gold ingot, right click on the sign.

Buying and selling with shops:

Buying and selling your belongings can be done by setting up ChestShops. A ChestShop is the combination of a regular chest and a sign placed within one block of the chest, on which you put the item you're selling/buying, the amount, and the price. On the sign, you type:

<blank line>
item amount
price
item name

The first line must be left blank, as the plugin automatically fills that in with your name.

Example:

<blank line>
64
B 128 : S 96
Cobblestone

In this example, a player can buy 64 cobblestone from this shop for $128, or sell 64 cobblestone to this shop for $96. The item amount is the amount you will buy per click. It is not necessarily the total amount they are selling.

The number next to "B" is the price at which people buy from your shop, and the number next to "S" is the price at which people sell to it. You do not necessarily have to type both. You can simply type "B 128" on this line if you only want to sell, or "S 96" if you only want to buy. For the last line, type either the item's ID or alias. Once you're done with the sign, stock the shop by simply putting however many of the specified item you want into the chest.

You buy from shops by right-clicking on them.
You sell to shops by left-clicking on them.

I do intend to upload the old world. The only reason I haven't done it is because I wanted to have an idea of the 1.9 seed we would be using. Guess I'll have to upload worlds for both pre-1.8 and 1.8 now as well.

That was the intent from the beginning of this new world. The 1.9 terrain generation engine just doesn't allow for continuing the current world. It's your choice to play until the update. All money you earn will be carried over to the new world. I'll also try to set up the current world as a secondary world on the server, so you can carry over stuff from your chests. Not even the backup plugin is working...it doesn't give an error on startup, but when it is scheduled to run, it errors out the ass.

King has now joined the hunt for a halfway decent seed, after I've pulled enough of my hair out looking.

What about my stuff? Is it all gone?

Any way to fond out who griefed the place?

Also, when we use the new seed, I say start everyone off from scratch. No transferring items. Because whoever had a shitload of tnt from the 1.8 world used it on my house. Im not letting that happen again.

so my friend runs a server out of his dorm room, and he and a couple of his friends play, and they build houses and stuff. every now and then, my buddy backs up the server, and then we do all sorts of terrible things like rig houses to blow up when people walk inside, cause a floor to open into a large shaft with water at the bottom, then lava slowly pours into it, etc... the goal is to kill his friends and destroy their shit in clever and ridiculous ways. we back up the server so we can restore their houses afterwards, but they always move out and run far off into the woods. then theyre relatively safe until we find their new house, at which point we plot the next attack. i think the current plan is to build a sky railroad above their houses and get a couple... "mercenaries" to get in carts with bows and arrows to rain death down upon them while blasting loud rap music into the voice chat.

its like a game of hide and seek... and gang war...
we dont use any admin powers or server commands. its all vanilla survival. either way, we back everything up so theres no permanent damage, and its usually hilarious for everyone.

fake E: and NO, i have absolutely no intention of doing anything like this anywhere but my friend's server. i only mention it because my interest in this game was severely declining until we started doing this. its outrageously fun.

People crying about fucked up mountains or w/e need to shush. Why don't we just stick with this fucking map and play? I'm tired of waiting weeks to play because we can't find a perfect seed or what the hell ever. If the terrain generation is fucked up, how do you expect to find a non-fucked up seed when we're generating 3000x3000 or w/e areas? Of course there's going to be something wrong somewhere on the map when you're generating that much terrain. If there's floating land and shit, jcap can just erase it with the admin commands. If you come across one, take down the coords and post it in here so jcap can remove it at his leisure.

I just want to fucking play.

ALSO, the Multiverse plugin created a huge problem with the old world. When the server was starting up, it got permanently stuck on loading the world and never finished. I don't know what caused it to happen, and I didn't figure out how to resolve it without deleting the plugin.

Hey king? Remember your nether portal that generated under a lava fall?
Well it wasnt actually a new portal. It was my old one, that Skyline covered in lava after I blocked off his access to it. He put lava on the ceiling so it would pour down onto the portal. How you ask? Oh yeah, he uses flymod.
I'm tired of Skyline's griefing and generally annoying behavior. Either pull him back down to earth or outright ban him. Honestly I'd prefer the latter, since he doesnt seem to want to contribute to the server and apparently can only have fun at other's expense.

jcap should redo the dynmap code so that it uses IRC chat in a widget instead of the built-in one. That way people would get a username while using dynmap as well.

I've just installed stat tracking and achievements plugins. It records things such as number of blocks created/destroyed (total as well as specific block types), items crafted, time played (AFK time not counted), kill count, death count, and damage dealt/taken.

The achievements plugin just reads from the stats database and then announces to you whenever you get one of the achievements I've added. I've only added some basic ones so far, such as 500/1000/5000/10,000/etc. blocks of stone/dirt/wood mined/dug/chopped, some distance traveled achievements, and some kill achievements. I'll add more later.

Ok, so I have an idea. I think I can set it up so the End gets automatically reset (dragon and everything) at a set interval. What would be a good interval? Every week? Every three days? Every two days? I'm not sure, so I'm asking everyone else.

For the record, Ender Dragons drop enough experience to level you up from 0 to 110. Due to that, I don't want it to be reset too often.
