View Full Version : Bring Back Modeling Competitions?

No seriously, I think we should. Looking through some of the older stuff I made, and it was really fun and motivated me. We have some pretty tough competition now. It would be lots of fun. Not sure what the prizes would be. Thoughts?
(Posted in Studio because it seemed like the proper place to hold a modeling competition.)

Start one up and see who all joins in. Snaf and Teh Lag used to try but they didn't work out. I may join if they're simple subjects... MAY.

I was almost thinking a mapping competition too. Still falls under modeling, but texturing, and making the best map could really crank out some new maps if we could get some people participating. I wanna see some more feedback before I start a thread.

Ker-BUMP!
Seriously guys, if you have any interest in this please let me know. PM'd Ghost with some possible ideas of prizes... but I need you guys to show that your interested.
I'm Thinking
-Modeling Challenge (Rated on cleanliness, follow-through to provided subject, and effort)
a. Low Poly
b. High Poly
-Mapping Contest (Rated on gameplay, design, and fun level)
a. Large
b. Medium
c. Small
-Texturing Contest (Rated on how pretty it is. :P)
a. Probably would need to include simple model for showing off texturing... Still trying to think about this one.
Each of these would be held in a 1 month period. And a thread would be started to show work in progress, and another for the final.
Again, please show your interest by posting here with feedback and ideas to make this a fun experience.

I think it's a good idea.
A good and "cheap" prize could be a time limited contributor status of sorts such as leverage on signatures or avatars.
It's not much but it's an idea.

If I win can i ban warlord for a month?

This is actually exactly what I was talking to Ghost about. Something for your profile to show off you won, and maybe some other benefits. But I need more people to be enthusiastic about all of this for Ghost to feel like it should be implemented.

This sort of reminds me of when Halomods used to do signature competitions where you would be allowed a avatar for a week and have a emblem under your name.
As long as ghost doesn't decide to follow iron forges steps and start using emblems under names I don't see how this could hurt anyone.

If there is enough interest, I'll help in whatever way I can as a section mod. For a long time now this site has offered me nothing, so I've done nothing but lurk occasionally. If these competitions start back up, I'll probably show up more often, maybe even contribute.

In all honesty the studio has become pretty much a ghost town, hell most of modacity in general has died down. Even when we had a large number of visitors to this sub section, we could never get more then 3 people to participate.

Well... I guess then, if you were to win, what would everyone enjoy as a prize? In theory having to be something to do with the website...
I was also thinking that the winner could have their model/map/texture/whatever posted on the front page till the next month. People won't do this without some sort of leverage to do so.

Prize could be to release the model. :P

I say "Yay." I'll have a new rig (hopefully) within the month and I simply can't wait until I can start modelling again (without that obnoxious Gmax error where verts disappear at a certain angle after a certain number are on screen).

I'm gonna talk to Ghost. If he is game, I plan to start one for next month. Starting on the first and ending on the 25th, then being judged and the winner announced on the 31st. Seem reasonable?

Just a panel. Judging on quality, presentation, etc.

judging on presentation is retarded
oh this guy has a slightly better model, but this guy went and made a prettier render/mockup/etc so he wins is just silly. Also pick good judges (neuro, snaf, etc)

Uhm, he just said that it will be judged based off of the skills presented in the work. Thats how almost all contests work.
Main things required in a good model art piece:
-Good model
-Great composition
-Great rendering
So, if a guy has shitty presentation skills and couldn't take as much time rendering as the next guy who can't even model, then it is to bad for him.
Also, neuro banned himself, and snaf... well, he isn't around much.
Honestly it should just be a community vote. Its a competition by the community, for the community. Imo of course. :)

Rendering shouldn't matter when the contest is based on the quality of the model-- you'd see a lot of shitty clay renders getting at the top of the list.

Halo scenery objects?
There isn't a way to model "Halo" things. If you want to name it anything, it would be modeling a "low poly" model.
Btw, this the studio thread, not the halo section. Hth.

If I am not mistaken, you were banned from this site and halo maps several times... which leads me to conclude that you're reasoning is backwards.

First off, I was refering to the part where you said "get that through you're head."
"you and people like you are the reason almost everyone worthwhile has completely vacated this site, jesus christ"
Since you linked me to neuro's banning, you must be implying that is why he left... because of people like me. I very much doubt that though, as he was always criting and correcting people. Lol. Again, you're thinking is backwards.
I do know whats what. Halo has nothing to do with how you "model". Its like saying, Lets model Unreal Tournament style!!!11
:\
Also, Dwood, my correction was valid. Making a modeling contest for a game that no one hardly plays on this site anymore is dumb. If it was a halo competition, I wouldn't have posted in this thread. But its not, is it.

Chill guys.
I like the idea of the community voting. And I understand the rendering thing. It wasn't so much the idea of how it was shown off I guess. But making it presentable is usually a good thing.
Edit: Did I really miss-spell the title? That's dumb... if someone could fix that...

There isn't really much of a studio community to vote, hardly anyone visits this section, let alone the site.
We need to start outsourcing to other sites by collaborating with them on contests and other events to get some publicity and hopefully traffic. The way I became a facepuncher was via one of our members mentioning the site, the same can work vice versa.

NVOUS/Selentic, chill. This is The Studio, which was originally designed as a place for users to showcase ANY of their creative works, not just stuff for Halo. Maybe you're forgetting that after this site became Modacity we tried to branch off from our Halo roots, this really needs to happen or this site WILL die. Our core user-base has Halo PC/CE background but that doesn't mean it's the only thing we can talk about on this site, go to HaloMaps or Kornman's new HaloMods when it opens up if you want that.
I think that bringing back occasional modeling competitions would be a good thing IF we can get people to participate. Offering something more than recognition on this website would be required if we want to attract other users to the site. If I had some extra disposable income right now I'd be willing to donate a Steam game gift up to $60 or something to the winner. This would certainly attract people from off-site, since they obviously don't give two shits about a custom emblem or donor status.

To be honest, I don't have the money to be giving to people. Free games tend to work, but they have to be modern games. I like the idea, but unfortunately the budget can't afford it. On the flip side, if someone can offer a prize, I would be more than willing to put it up. I'm going to add a thread for those of you who would like to participate, but are willing to do it for nothing for the time being, hopefully by the end of the month, I can have something figured out, but I wouldn't mind some help.

To be honest, making the model have to be a map playable in custom edition really cuts on the people who will participate. The requirements for the maps for hce are both for an outdated modeling form and a pain in the ass to accomplish. Not to mention the modelers who do not play hce and do not possess hek or tool to do such things. It should be much more open.

1) this community was formed from hce and most of the people here are still interested in mods for the game. We may not play it daily but that doesn't mean we aren't interested 2) the modelling technique for this is very very easy to accomplish if you model the right way. If you can't model without any open edges then why are you even modeling
BobtheGreatII

Don't worry, if this isn't your bag, there are going to be other competitions, including just models, but be prepared, because they won't be easy. Modeling a map is only the first of hopefully many competitions. But don't think that everyone will be able to do each one. You can't include everyone. But if people are willing to work in a team, then one person can model and the other can work on getting it in game. You have options.
