So Adobe announced a bunch of interesting stuff today at NABShow (National Association of Broadcasters).

Announcement 1: Adobe CS5.5 updates a few of their programs mostly for better mobile production.

Announcement 2: Oh, a month-to-month subscription commercial license.

http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/cssubscription.html <--- Edit: Wow, forgot to add this link... was rushing for supper.

Example:
-Photoshop for 45$ (Extended for 75$) commercially per month...
-Production Premium {Photoshop Extended + Illustrator + Premiere Pro + After Effects + Flash Catalyst + Flash Pro + Helper Programs + Audition} for 129$ commercially per month... cancel and restart at will.

{There are discounts if you're locked in for a year}

Did I say Audition?
Announcement 3: Oh yeah, Adobe killed Soundbooth and revived Audition : D

Booyah.

Edit: I wasn't clear enough. Adobe Subscriptions: If you want to use an Adobe product or Suite temporarily... you can pay a very small fee for a month pass, basically, for use even in commercial projects.

The video even says that you can use the trial, upgrade the trial, and then get a 5 day grace period after it ends... so really for the start of your first subscription it's ~2.2 months, not 1.

WTF subscriptions?

Autodesk does it with some of their software licenses. Most anti-virus companies also do it with their products. It actually changes it more to a service than a final product, and services are more profitable.

So when Sony or anyone else does it, its a war crime, but when Adobe does it its free market capitalism?

The difference here is that Adobe is allowing people to be charged on a monthly basis for use of extremely expensive products without purchasing the product outright. It's more cost effective for some people who don't need the service all of the time and would find it convenient to use for a short period of time...

My bad I misunderstood then. I had thought the idea was they were charging a monthly fee to people who had purchased the product.

Now this is something that interests me. Being a computer art and graphics programming major, Im royally fucked if I have assignments over long breaks (mainly just christmas and summer) and no access to the school PCs with the adobe products on them. So this will be nice to subscribe for the months im not in school.

Adobe needs to do what Autodesk does with its Student Licenses...

I STRONGLY agree. But this Adobe we're talking about here.

Adobe made student licenses available to us when I was in high school, but as a high school student without a job I still couldn't afford the prices they were asking. This was CS3 era.

If the competition was actually recognized by the professional industry, we might see Adobe behaving more appropriately. As it is, they can do whatever they want with impunity. Same can be said for Autodesk. I'm actually surprised that the latter has not been slapped with an anti-trust suit, since they basically bought up all the competition (XSI, Maya, etc.).
