I would take advantage of this if my institution didn't force us to lease a Lenovo T510 laptop for $1583CAD/year. We are not allowed to use our own laptop. I don't have an xbox or a laptop would good graphics so this would have been the perfect opportunity :(

iirc you can also order a custom build from Dell's website and get a free Xbox as long as it's over $699. You don't have to buy a cookie cutter preconfigured one from MS. I got something in the mail from Dell two days before Microsoft even announced it.

e: Oh, it looks like Microsoft links you to Dell's and HP's website from the Facebook page. When I saw this MS announcement 2 days ago, I only saw a link to the Microsoft Store website.

It's not that bad as long as you get a Lenovo or Toshiba computer (unless you wanted to customize it). If you get an HP, however...

Step 5: Spend the next 2 hours uninstalling bloatware as you hold back the tears realizing you overpaid for a cookie cutter plastic piece of shit.

Better idea: rob a best buy, and get both a free PC and a free 360. If anyone asks, just say you thought the rapture had happened and everything was now fair game. Then sue that old fuck faced dipship who runs that Family Radio or w/e station for making you think it was safe to rob a best buy. If you get caught, that is. Fucking zealot morons.

That happens even if you order from HP direct. The only computers that aren't quite as fucked are their business laptops or the ENVY line.

You never go for a Dell. That's like buying a gun that always shoots you when you pull the trigger.

This whole scenario is kind of stingy for me. I JUST bought a $1,000 HP computer off of the HP website a couple of weeks before this was announced.

Not 100% relevant, but http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=335m&x=0&y=0

$729 = Geforce GT 335m, core i5, 4 GB RAM, in a nice portable 14" package - I just helped a friend abroad buy one of these and he loves it. If your sister prefers something larger (i.e. 15.6") then you can drop the price even lower (i.e. Dell XPS 15, some Gateways I've seen in random places).

Conveniently, my mom needs a new laptop so if this deal still holds by this Saturday, I can get a friend in Los Angeles to help me out as I'm going there for a week anyways. It'll be nice to get a 360 on the network without having to bridge the ethernet with a netbook (my TV is way too far from the router to use wired).

Thanks for the link. We may consider it. The $729 is out of her scope seeing as she doesn't really need anything with that much power. The 14" size is perfect, though. She's a nurse that works in a hospital so she can't lug her 15.6" Toshiba around all day. The 10" Acer Aspire Netbook we have is perfect, but the performance is on the low side for actually getting shit done in a timely manner. A macbook would be the perfect compromise between size and performance, but fuck that. Apple can die with their prices.

The problem remains...no free X360's in Canada.

Go to the US and buy one?

Can you just walk into a BestBuy, buy the laptop, grab the X360 and come back? It'd be cheaper since the CAD is stronger right now, but we'd get hit with massive duty taxes, though. Hmm. I do have relatives from Florida coming up in the next two weeks. If we got the stuff shipped to them and brought over the border, they could claim that those things are their belongings and then just hand them to us over here. It should work. It's way too tedious, though.

Mr Buckshot
May 27th, 2011, 03:09 AM
hit with massive duty taxes, though.

They never search your vehicle at the border, at least at the Peace Arch crossing I always use. Rip off the packaging and throw it away before you bring it back in, just in case. After all, who's to say that you didn't bring your own console to visit a friend in the US and play with him? Hell, you can just load the trunk with empty luggages and then fill them up before coming in. That's what I did to buy my laptop - just bring an empty laptop case, then put a brand new laptop inside after buying it. They don't keep track of what you've brought into the US other than your car, so they have no proof that any goods you're bringing back wasn't something you already own.

The real monetary concern you should have is the gas needed to go across. Toronto is not exactly a stone's throw away from the Niagara crossing, and with gas prices these days you might not really save much versus buying your stuff locally. And also, there's the concern of wasted time since the border crossings are really backed up during the summer.

The only import duty my family has ever had to pay on something brought in from the US is a car, because that's kind of conspicuous. Anything like games, clothes, etc doesn't get hit with the duty.

Cortexian
May 27th, 2011, 03:46 AM
Anything you declare has a risk of being hit with duty, so just don't declare anything and make it look like you brought it down with you in the first place.

And don't look all nervous and shifty on your back for the love of god.

...I don't know if you read my entire post, but I said the same thing in simplified terms. I don't plan to do this for two reasons:

1. It's too much effort.
2. Look to the 2nd half of this post.

I'm always cool at the border. I went to New York on a MegaBus a few weeks ago and while they scanned out bags while going to the US, they just checked our passports when we were coming back. I could have smuggled a kickass airsoft gun through if I knew that was going to happen :(

----------------------------------

Anyways, I'm going to buy a PS3 controller later today (HOLY FUCK JUST CHECKED BACK AND THEY ARE ONLY $40 till June 23rd, sry) and was browsing the Futureshop website, but look what I found:

For the love of god, why are they all HP laptops? Why no Lenovo or Toshiba (at the least)?

In any case, I like the look of this laptop:

It looks nice and clean, it's cheap, and the specs are decent for my sister:

Price: $599.99 CAD
CPU: Intel Core i3-380M 2.53 GHz
HDD: 750GB 5400RPM (Don't know what brand)
RAM: 4GB DDR3 (Don't know what brand, speed, or timings are)
CPU: Intel HD Graphics

The resolution is rather low and the graphics suck, but since I don't intend to use this computer it's good enough for my sister. I just want that goddamn XBOX!

Mr Buckshot
May 27th, 2011, 04:33 PM
If specs are no concern, those HPs should be good enough.

I find Toshiba (and Japanese in general) laptops tend to be overpriced, sometimes even approaching Apple levels. Lenovo isn't as bad but it also tends to cater to the "professional" market, so their value isn't great either.

Anyways, going out later to check out the $599 model. If my mom likes it, I won't have to reserve baggage room to bring one back from LA.

Yeah, if you're looking at the Portege models, which nobody buys anyways. The satellite ones are the most affordable and still offer great performance. Lenovo's value is mediocre in specs, but the laptops are rugged as fuck.

Lenovo's Keyboard > All

I'm typing on one right now. I don't even need to look at the keyboard anymore, it's that comfortable. My dad's second laptop has chiclet keys. Whoever invented chiclet keys should go key their own car. They are the worst types of QWERTY keyboards available. Most vendors screw up on the spacing of the keys and fuck it up. It's confusing as hell to try to type something and not look at the keyboard. Apple is the only vendor that understands this and spaces their MBP's keys well. I tried out the new Lenovo chiclet keyboards, too. They are excellent as usual. I guess it's just depends on the person who is doing the spacing of the keys.

Warsaw
May 28th, 2011, 09:17 PM
Apple looks like it spaces the same as Sony, who invented the chiclet keyboard in the first place.

That said, I hate them. I hate the way they look and I hate the way most of them feel.
