I use to think Valve was competent. Then I realized that they require the SteamApps folder to be in the install directory of Steam.

I just recently signed up for the Steam Community (http://cdeezgames.com/pc-games/steam-community/) so I could play some online games on my PC. I am thinking of getting a new computer though, but does anybody know what the minimum requirements are for the best new games on Steam right now?

Go to the page of the game you are interested in and check out the minimum specs for the games there. It should be near the bottom of the page after all the product descriptions.
The best new games? Not everyone will have the same view on what the best games are and there aren't a lot of new games that are considered excellent. However, Modacity.net members generally agree on what some of the best games to be playing are:
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - A LOT of people own this game on PC. As a result, I have created a thread in the Off-Topic section for a "platoon" of Modacity players. Check out the thread here (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?22753). Skip all the fancy pictures and read just the text from the first post. Should you decide to buy BC2, post your SteamID, In-Game ID, and time zone in that thread.
Minecraft - This game is not offered on Steam, however there is a sizable playerbase of this game on the Modacity server. For myself I don't have any interest at all in playing it, but that's just me. It is easily considered one of the best games to be playing right now. You can get it at minecraft.net for $20. Pretty steep for a game like this and you're no longer guaranteed free updates once the game is out of beta unless you purchased the game before it went beta.
Left 4 Dead 2 - If you like killing hordes of zombies and shitting your pants occasionally, this team-oriented shooter from Valve has got you covered. This is probably the most popular zombie shooter game and thousands of people still play it online.

Don't forget Crysis 2. It's a competent game and it's also very pretty.

I don't really think so.
Sure the campaign is okay, but multiplayer is literally "Call of Duty: The Future with POWER SUITS"
Game is filled to the brim with cheaters (just look at their pc forums for gods sake), and it is riddled with bugs (that I have experienced myself), such as rank resets, (example, i was playing a game at rank 20, and I have a sudden disconnection for no reason, and find that my rank got reset to 18), Sudden disconnects for no reason (as said before), and most importantly, I had my campaign progress deleted TWICE due to Crysis 2 updating. First time it happened was the day after I completed Crysis 2 on Posthuman, opened it up and all my campaign progress was deleted. ALL OF IT.
Second time it happened was after another update, again I had completed campaign on Posthuman and I fucking lost everything.
This game doesn't stand up to the original, hell, Crysis on the lowest graphical settings to me looks a fuckton better than Crysis 2 on High (My graphics card prevents me from playing on Very High or Extreme) and it plays much better.
Don't get Crysis 2. Personally in my opinion it was a waste of $60 dollars and since I bought it on Steam I can't return it. Too much bugs

Other than the part about Crysis 1 looking better than Crysis 2 on High, I agree. Crysis 2 is just a huge mess. I would not never consider adding that to the "best games" list unless all the technical glitches were cleaned up and cheating prevented.
