I know I've had a lot of topics here lately, but now that I have a good 3ds Max (2010 ftw), I've decided I might as well attempt at something I believe with be tough and yet fruitful. I want to model, rig, and animate a Halo Reach Ranger Elite. I am currently gathering references and I'm also going to spend weeks on studying the general physiology of the Ranger Elite so that I won't end up rage quitting when I mess up.

So everyone, here is where you come in: advice. What advice can you all give me? It's Covenant, a Biped, and I've heard my poly count can't be too high. What specifics do I need to fulfill my goal? Any modeling methods that would prove useful here? Any emotional support and tips on surviving this sort of ordeal? Thanks for any help you can offer.

I've come back with references:

2116

2117

2118

2119

2120

2121

If anyone can help me by suggesting ways to tackle this, it would be very much appreciated. I've already been trying to model the feet, but alas, I ultimately got way too unorganized and ended up scrapping the file.

Alright, is there a number of polies I should avoid or should I just aim for low poly as possible?

Uh Not really. Just model it like regular. You should be able to tell if there's wayyy too many pollies.

yes, substitute one tool for another which does everything the same, but it's HIP!
(fuck topogun)

i'd personally sub'd model it and then make lowpoly, as then you can easily get the smoothness.

I was thinking of doing this, especially since Turbosmooth looks better for Covenant and the model requires a lot of detail. Any recommended tutorials (Autodesk's tutorials suck).
