Aerowyn made a thread (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?23584) back in the Valve section, but since nobody checks that place I guess I'll post here too
Been wanting Bit.Trip Runner for a while now; it's $2.50 (I literally couldn't get a bacon cheeseburger + drink for that little). I'd also recommend Witcher 2 to anybody with a good PC and a high tolerance for bad UI design and horribly misshapen difficulty curves; it's a fun, well-acted, solidly written, and relatively complex RPG which looks as good/better than Crysis when maxed
I can already feel my wallet trying to run away in fear of the inevitable abuse coming along
(Also, guess which publisher doesn't have a catalogue discount going! Hint: It rhymes with "ELECTRONIC ARTS")

DOW2: Retribution is so appetizing at that price. I had a pirated version in my steamapps folder that I installed with SmartSteam, but never played. I bought Retribution and Steam instantly picked it up and updated it, haha. No download waiting time for me :D

It's already 10% off as a pre-order. They're not going to drop it until at least the Christmas sales (read: after the game's been out for a while).
Only scrubs don't wait till the last day of sales before they buy games at marked down prices (unless they appear on daily sales obv)

I haven't played the game in at least 5 years. Does it even have online protection? Otherwise you can just install and play. I can't remember if it used serials. Shit I should probably make sure I still have the box and that my mother didn't chuck it out.

I could never understand how somebody plays Trine with a controller. I have a PS3 controller sitting next to me right now, but I feel no compulsion to find out how bad the aiming with Zoya's grappling hook would be. Not enough precision. However, using magic with Amadeus wouldn't be too difficult and Pontius is like a usual console sidescroller character, so I see those two working fine.

Pushing up the sensitivity makes it too easy to overshoot what you're aiming for. Still, that's as good as it gets on a controller.

Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY is $7.50 today! Definitely one of the best games I have ever played.
Recommend it as long as you make sure to back up your game saves properly, damn GFWL. I find it plays better with a gamepad, so if you get a better deal on the console version then go for that.
GTA IV no longer has the stupid social club thing mandatory so that's also a great buy. Stability is still not good but better than what it was at launch thanks to patching.
And Left 4 Dead 2 at $5, both games together for $7.50... wow, I thought I was already getting a killer deal back in december 2009 when my friends and I split the 4-pack and spent $25 each.
Also today's summer camp tickets don't have anything that doesn't require a game purchase... oh well, time to get my Stream Crossing achievement today in L4D2. Although I have a lot of games in my account most of the tickets are for indie titles that I'm not really interested in no matter the price :/

Did anyone pick up the Monkey Island bundle when it was on sale?
I'm already hooked. At first I didn't know what this was when I saw it on the front page, then I realized it was a remake of a really memorable point-and-click adventure game I played as kid on my primary school's libary computers. I was like holy shit and bought it immediately. The ability to switch to the classic 1990 interface/graphics is also sweet.
Even at only 33% off this game is still a steal, would recommend it purely for nostalgia.

July 7th, 2011, 03:47 AM
I got War for Cybertron a few days back. Pretty fun and carries a lot of G1 Transformers nostalgia. The shooting feels great with a mouse and the vehicle modes strafe around, so that works well with keyboard. The only issue is the vehicle modes have Boost and that controls like steering, which is pretty bad with kb/m, but not horrible. Might try a controller, but my front USB ports got fucked up by an external hard drive and it's kind of a pain to get down and plug the controller into the back. I'm old.
Also bought Oblivion, Braid, Darksiders, and Just Cause 2. So, those are sitting in my Steam backlog queue along with (from the Winder sale) Far Cry 2, Episodes from Liberty City, Red Faction Guerrilla, (from last month's sale) the BIA games, RB6 Vegas 2, and Splinter Cell Double Agent, which does not work. Can't wait to see what else crashes when I try to play. Honestly, it's kind of a relief. All these games are overwhelming and I'm thinking of them as more of a chore list than recreation.
Mr Buckshot
July 7th, 2011, 12:43 PM
Get a USB extender or hub and plug it into the rear USB ports so that it makes them easier to access.
How exactly does Double Agent crash for you? For me it would randomly quit to desktop at various times making constant F5-spamming a necessity. Anyway it is a shitty port and sadly the console version is probably safer (the PC version even has terrible keyboard/mouse controls in some areas like safe-cracking). I can't even enable my native resolution without going to the ini files. Chaos Theory is a better game in every way.
also if you have a Windows XP installation, try running on that. Seemed more stable for me than on 64-bit win7.

I would get a windows error message telling me that the game was not responding and then I would have to close it. This would happen after the main menu when I would try to actually start the game. And yes, I'm using 64-bit Windows 7. The resolution options are pretty laughable. '05 and '06 games were on that fringe of current gen graphics, but last gen resolution options. I tried a couple of things with the ini file, but I only seemed to make it crash BEFORE the menu screen. Then I uninstalled it. I do have 32-bit XP laying around, but not installed. If I ever get that desperate to play, I'll give it a shot, thanks.
Really, it's my own fault. I know better than to buy non-Gearbox Ubisoft games and expect them to work correctly. Plus, the PC/360 versions of Double Agent aren't even the good versions of that game. The last gen console versions were the more complete, refined, and stable experiences. But $5 Steam sales can override a lot of common sense. Which is why they are so evil!

Similar issues here. Even with the DRM mostly patched out (still calls home on 1st launch but doesn't need permanent connection), I sometimes could not get it to launch and I had too many crashes to desktop. The only "solution"? Trial and error.
Tried a pirated version that had the DRM completely removed and it still suffered from many in-game bugs that the legit version also has. But it launched every try.
anyway DRM or no DRM, bugs or no bugs, Conviction isn't a great game. Totally ruined the Splinter Cell series imo. Chaos Theory is still the best in the series. And why the hell isn't Pandora Tomorrow on Steam? That was also a good game.
I've run out of games that benefit from the Camp tickets... got 6 hanging out there. Too bad I can't redeem them for Just Cause 2 gear or something.

I don't get it. What was the advantage of waiting until the last day to buy anything? As far as I can tell, only a selection of the games offered are back on sale and they aren't any cheaper than they were earlier in the week.
I had heard from a few places to hold off until the last day, but since no one bothered to put an actual argument behind that advice, I ignored it. As it happens, only one of the games I bought is back on sale today.

Well, the logic behind it was only to be applied to games that weren't already a Daily Deal. Nobody said wait unless the last day to buy anything. Most games had discounts, but sometimes they became a Daily Deal at a later date, which is why you should wait. If you waited for a game to become a Daily Deal and it didn't, there's no loss to you since you still have the opportunity to buy the game at its already discounted price (if it's discounted at all).

GTAIV on steam? Tip: if you're modding the game, don't be like me - back up your vehicles.img and the related .dat and .ide files. I didn't back up and had to delete and redownload 13 GB which was a pain in the ass. The "verify cache" fix doesn't seem to work for me at all.
Amit
July 11th, 2011, 06:41 PM
I could always grab it from the version I downloaded a few months ago if none of the patches touched the vehicles.img. I learned that the reallly hard way with san andreas. I still have that on this computer than I play from time to time. I modded that game to hell and back. Had to re-download the game once to fix a graphical issue.

Wow only three people who won put Heroes of Stalingrad on their list. Oh well, thousand upon thousands entered. I am disappointed by the amount of Blops.
