They lost most of mine by adding multiplayer... now I'll wait til it's cheap, instead of day one
I would like to agree with the person who responded.

Yeah, I know the OP was playing on the words, I was asking who seriously names a game "Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine".
edit: oh, ok, it's based on some table top game that survived the 1980s. That explains the name.

This post is entirely wrong if the demo is any indication.
The colour palette is our usual brown and gray, the encounters are just masses of the same enemy (maybe one ridiculous big guy enemy too) running at you, at varying levels of unfairness, and just overall entirely uninteresting unless you're one of those weird nerds whose followed it the last 15 years or whatever I guess?

I collected a Space Marine and Tau army for awhile when I was younger, still have them but they're terribly painted (14 year old painting). Besides that I played the Dawn of War games, and that's my total experience with the universe. I found this demo to be a fun mash-em-up game, didn't have to sit down and think, just beat the shit out of some orcs.

Matt ran Nids, our friend Alex ran Orks. But meh, no one plays anymore.

Is the Dawn of War series easy to get into like the early Command & Conquer games, or is it more like a Blizzard RTS where if you're not all that good, there's no point in trying?
I enjoyed the hell out of the DoW II beta(even won my very first online RTS match), but I missed it when it came out.
TeeKup

Dawn of War and its expansions were really fun. It was an RTS without the MLG RTSness that is Starcraft.
Though when I get my new computer I expect I'm going to try and get into StarCraft.

Dawn of War is easy to get into. The campaigns walk you through enough to pick it up quickly, but not to the point that it gets boring or over-simplified.
Hotrod
September 6th, 2011, 09:39 PM
Both Dawn of War games are very different from one another, but they're both excellent.
Also, started the campaign for Space Marine and I'm really enjoying it so far. It gives you a pretty different experience compared to the multiplayer. Speaking of multiplayer, I started to get better at it and am enjoying it more as I play for longer. Now only if somebody wasn't afk when I joined their party...

Played the bit of the Campaign. Wasn't getting that much into it but then it's late and I'm tired. Maybe it'll get better further in when things get more complicated.
Now the multiplayer on the other hand, I'm really liking. This game just has a really solid feel to it. Everything seems really well balanced, weapons are visceral and satisfying, moving around the map is fun. Only time will tell if anything obnoxiously overpowered crops up. Also, it seems most people playing this game don't understand the concept of evasion, which is something I'm abusing the hell out of. Nothing beats rolling around a corner to evade a charging enemy then popping back out and shooting him in the face.
TeeKup
September 6th, 2011, 11:18 PM
Apparently it's also getting a Free co-op Horde mode DLC come next month, will keep a close eye on that as well. In the meantime, I'll be enjoying multiplayer.

Also, I forgot to mention: PC version optimization is godlike. How they got the game to look so good, but play so smoothly is beyond me. That or Devs are lazy these days and don't put enough effort into optimization of their games.

Pretty much.
It's really not that bad though, at level 5 you have all the basic classes as well as the customizer unlocked.
e: Also, to anyone playing this on a console, I strongly recommend mapping melee to a shoulder button. Being able to aim while melee attacking is really important here since there's no fag-lunge.

Sadly no Terminator Armor.
Mk 8 Errant
Mk 6 Corvus
Mk 4 Maximus
Battle Damaged Mk 7Aquila
Standard Aquila
Relic Power Armor
Veteran Power Armor
Master Crafted Power Armor
You can also get the Ultramarines Champion Armor by beating the campaign. Chaos have a lot too but fuck chaos.
Weapons:
Tactical
Godwyn Pattern Bolter (standard)
Stalker Patter Bolter (sniper)
Bolt Pistol
Plasma Gun
Melta Gun
Vengeance Grenade Launcher
Storm Bolter
Devastator/Havoc
Plasma Cannon
Lascannon
Heavy Bolter
Bolt Pistol
Assault/Raptor
Chain Sword
Power Sword (if you bought Kill Team)
Power Axe/Chain Axe
Thunder Hammer/Great Maul
Bolt Pistol
Plasma Pistol
Plasma pistol has superior accuracy at distance especially with its rate of fire, but not nearly the stopping power of the bolt pistol. Ask pooky, we actively use it as our primary weapon at times, slow concentrated shots can tear off shields, as soon as they're down a single headshot will kill. I've won straight up "duals" with marines using standard bolters (some with kraken ammo).

They don't dress nearly as well as the other races. The unequivocal rage tends to throw me off as well. Tragic for Magnus The Red and the Thousand Sons? Yes. Tragic for the Word Bearers and World Eaters? No. Black Legion and Horus himself? Oh definitely.
In fact, if the game offered a Thousand Sons helmet I'd use them, I actually like them a lot. I just can't stand the overly spiky and aggressive "METUL BAWXES" Chaos. Not to say the Space Marines are better, shouting FOR THE EMPEROR every 5 minutes but whatever.

If there was terminator armour, they'd actually have to use some effort to make the teleportation system work, which will also require them to add teleportation to other aspects of the game and...well, it's probably not something they want to touch just yet. Not to mention every fag and their mother would be using it because it looks awesome and teleports people around.

Just finished the part where Chaos shows up, I totally knew that the weapon would "malfunction" and end up bringing Chaos into the reality as soon as they mentioned that the power core was Warp energy.
The intro cinematic for the Chaos was pretty badass as well, typical Orc leader to not die and then just completely switch sides and start fighting the Chaos Lord for me. I just got to the part where you go down the lift and run into Lt Mira again for the start of Chapter 12.

In regards to my post about Terminator armor, I just read up some lore on the subject. I didn't realize that the armor was so rare and therefore hardly used in the first place. You're more likely to see a Chaos Terminator than a regular ones... Also, a company of 20 or so Terminators apparently charged into the heart of a Tyranid invasion and in doing such eventually ended up killing off all Tyranids on the planet.
Since they're that rare and that badass, I guess I can forgive not letting us play as them.
That said, War Titans are even more rare and we get to see one of those in the game...

It's multiplayer, things like that don't really apply. Mehreens in actual 40k aren't nearly as overpowered as they are in the fiction. I see no reason why Terminators couldn't be in multiplayer.

It's because if ANYTHING in ANY 40K game was as strong as it is in the law, it would be OP as hell. That's the whole point of the setting.
And it's worth noting that I assume Freelancer was referring to battle of Maccrage. The entire first company of the Ultramarines (1st company = terminator company = the 100 best marines in a chapter equipped in the best armour in the Imperium using the best weapons available to a founding legion) were tasked with holding the southern polar fortress of Maccrage (the Ultramarine homeworld and one of the best fortified and prosperous planets in the entire Imperium) during the assault of Hive Fleet Behemoth (the first Tyranid hive fleet to enter imperial space). They were totally wiped out, the last of their members found dead back to back at the center of the fortress, the corpses of the assaulting nids piled meters high the whole way through.
It took centuries to repair/rebuild their equipment (including almost all the terminator armour the chapter had) and just as long to find a new 100 marines worthy of being part of the 1st company.
You can't have guys that tough in a game. It wouldn't be fun :p
(There were still a few nids left btw.)

And to add onto the whole discussion of Terminators in multiplayer, one player in Terminator armour would be either over powered (though a bit slower and less maneuverable) or extremely non-fluff, which would then piss a lot of people off. You could say "Well give them the model/textures of a Terminator but keep the same stats and all of regular marines. Sure, let's give Terminators jump packs, or how about having them roll around like the Tactical Marines? Doesn't work.
If the tabletop game shows anything (which still doesn't follow the lore extremely well in this case), Terminators are extremely tank in both close combat and ranged combat (2+ armour save with 5+ Inv. anyone?). A single squad of 5 Terminators can easily destroy multiple squads of any other type. Hell, I've had two Chaos Terminators completely destroy a Space Marine Tactical Squad on their own once and still lived to take own a few Space Wolves and even managed to kill A Grey Knight Paladin in Terminator armour (who are even more powerful than regular Termies).

A part of me wished that Titus would actually turn to Chaos so you'd get to kill Leandros...I hated that guy soooooo much.
And the boss fight reminded me a lot of Force Unleashed since all the boss fights in that game were sort of like that
yeah man, fuck leandros. i was goign SHOOT HIM IN THE FACE SHOOT HIM IN THE FACE DO IT DO IT NOWWWWWWW..
and yeah, the force unleashed, that was it!

I don't recall legions of people getting pissed about mehrens not being totally overpowered in 40k, why would they get pissed about terminators being balanced in MP. Nothing about that argument makes sense. They'd be slow moving damage tanks with some cool melee weapons and innacurate ranged weapons and maybe teleportation abilities.

The only way I can see teleport working(at least offhand) is if they counted as having built-in beacon or rapid deployment. Any active teleporting and they're a soak-Raptor that's
constantly behind you
takes fifteen seconds of plasma cannon to kill
carrying a storm bolter and thunder hammer
constantly fucking behind you
(okay, listing that off is just making me wish for a Grey Knights game)
so far this is a blast to play, stalker-pattern/burst fire is hilariously good.

I've seen people bitch about the lascannon "not being the way it is in the lore" and the meltagun not being the same as in DoW2. And those are just small things, imagine Terminators being thrown into there...
In plus, there's already a slow moving damage tank class, being the devastator. Not to mention that the teleportation would just be a better version of jump packs that are used by the Assault/Raptor class, who also are the melee weapon class. Throwing in Terminators would just screw around with everything. The way I see it, the three classes are very well balanced at the moment and all fill separate roles nicely and throwing in Terminators would screw around with that.

Perhaps, but as part of an expansion of the game into a more "big war" scenario with vehicles and large maps I can see it working pretty well.
Hotrod
September 12th, 2011, 08:07 PM
Yeah, I agree with you on that one since vehicles would a whole new level of power that could balance it out (if done well).
One way that I could see Terminator armour working in the current setup is if there were some sort of VIP gametype (Ã* la Halo 3) where the VIP on each team is wearing a suit of Terminator armour, or if there was a sort of Juggernaut style of game where the Juggernaut was a Termie.

no, a sequel doesnt have to be a moneygrab.
if they release a sequel as the exact same stuff with some new levels *cough CALL OF SHITTY*cough then it's a moneygrab.
i wouldnt call a proper followup in a series a moneygrab.

There used to be these things called expansion packs that did exactly what you described. They did it for like $10.

Comment in the games Kotaku review. I lol'd hard.
"Hello, heretics, look at your false gods, now back to me, now back at your false gods, now back to me. Sadly, you aren't me, but if you stopped performing unholy rituals of blood and repented to the divinely benevolent light of the Emperor, you could be purified in death. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re impaled on the chainsword of the man you could find eternal peace from. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s your black, beating heart. Look again, your heart has been purified in flame. Anything is possible when you open your heart to the Emperor and accept his judgement. I’m on a space hulk."

See, if they had gone with dedicated servers then there wouldn't be this stupid host migration bullshit.
Amit

:/ Relic has never used dedicated servers since most of their games already require an internet connection.
Cortexian
September 16th, 2011, 05:34 PM
How does requiring an internet connection effect not having dedicated servers? You make it sound like dedicated servers are for offline use. Since most of their games have required internet connections you'd think that they would have figured out that PC gamers prefer dedicated servers.
Dedicated servers allow for server admins to enforce rulesets on specific servers, they allow you to filter by ping/location, and basically add a whole swackload of ease of use features to the game. Not having dedicated servers makes my gaming experience worse.
Also, I'm really regretting playing the Campaign before buying the game. Now I have to play it again just to get the achievements and armor unlocks...
Amit

I should have clarified what I meant. Relic Entertainment used Relic accounts as a way to prevent pirates from playing multiplayer. This prevented pirates who updated to newer version from using the offline sign in hack and then using LAN to play the game. Relic Entertainment develops RTS games, mainly. RTS games don't usually use dedicated servers. So, Relic probably doesn't have the expertise to get the dedicated servers running the way they want. Space Marine is clearly a different genre of game than RTS, but the point is that Relic isn't used to dedicated servers so they won't do it on their first major release of a genre they're not proven in.

If a game development company starts development on a game to use dedicated servers instead of a matchmaking system from the get-go it's usually much easier. First off, none of the matchmaking code needs to be created or implemented. You substitute the matchmaking code for server browser and server filtering code which IMO, is easier.

Have you done this before? I'm sure it's not a simple substitution of code.

I just finished the campaign. Wow. I'm only lvl 5 in MP so far. I find MP sort of difficult. Sometimes I do well and get a ton of points while raping some people, but most of the time I get raped a lot. What is the secret to being good at this game?!
Cagerrin
September 22nd, 2011, 02:34 PM
Plasma Cannon, Iron Halo, Artificer Armour
okay, that's the cheap way. I did pretty well with the Stalker-pattern bolter for a while, it's fairly easy to shotgun with in a pinch. Also practice throwing a flash and rolling out of LoS, hilariously useful against most enemies

I suck so bad with the plasma cannon. Then again, that was before I played the campaign. I spent most of the last 3 days playing campaign and I played MP before that (against my own protocol of playing games: play the SP first if it is available). Had I played the SP first, I would have figured out how ALL of the weapons work. I find the Assault class to be the best for me to get kills with since people sort of shit their pants when you get in close and slice them up. I know Space Marines are all about melee combat, but I prefer ranged combat instead and I usually get raped when using anything that isn't a Stalker Bolter. I can tear some ass with the melta gun since it's basically 2-hit kill, but that only works for close range. I really wish there was even a basic cover system because the only way to take pot shots at a heavily armed enemy is to expose at least half your body to it. It's no so bad when you're aiming right of a piece of cover since the camera places the marine on the left side of the screen, but trying to shoot somebody when aiming left of the cover means your entire body has to be exposed if you want to be able to see your target and not have your shots hit the piece of cover.

plasma cannon works better if you don't charge it, most of the time you can't get away with precharging and the charge time is long enough for anyone to kill you if you're open, also IH/AA is tough enough that I think it takes a pair of lascannon headshots(not completely sure on this). Raptors are fun, but once you start ending up in higher-level games they really start to suck since they're surprisingly easy to counter due to terrible shields. Combat knife is generally superior to chainswords if you bother with stun moves(which nobody does except for the occasional dev)
