Reviews are hitting. I wouldn't call myself a Gears fan, but I've enjoyed the series enough that when I saw Amazon had a $20 credit for preordering, I pulled the trigger. I've only checked a couple of the reviews so far (from critics I trust) and it's looking like a good decision.
Horde 2.0 sounds sweet. I think Gears' gameplay lends itself better to hunkering down and defending a position than Halo gameplay, due to the cover system and emphasis on flanking. On top of that, you earn cash to build emplacements, lay out razor wire, and do all sorts of shit. Firefight is great, but I don't think it ever knocked off Horde 1.0 as the standard-bearer for that type of experience and Horde 2.0 seems to be splitting that lead wide open. (It's okay, Halo, your strength is fighting from one side of an encounter to the other, not standing in one spot, twiddling thumbs. DON'T YOU EVER BE ASHAMED OF THAT!)
Am I the only one on board for Gears 3? The fact that I had to start this thread probably answers that question.

Slightly interested in the story, no interest in the multiplayer, high interest in Horde 2.0.
I'll get it after I buy all my other holiday shopping.

I was super into Gears 1 multiplayer, Gears 2 not so much. Always liked the story though, will probably get it at some point, just not at release.

Loved GoW1, Gow2 was good but multiplayer was complete shit imo, it added to many unnecessary things that weren't fun. Getting gow3 though, should be good from what I've seen and heard.

For those that put stock in metacritic averages, the game is currently carrying a 92. The reviews on the lower end of the spectrum were 4/5 stars, which get translated as 80%. Keeping in mind that this game is going to have points deducted simply for being the third Gears of War game, it must have some things going for it.
I'm with you guys on previous opinions of Gears games. Mild interest in campaign no interest in multiplayer. But I'm starting to get excited about re-evaluating those conclusions.

i have gears one and two. mainly play them for the ridiculousness of them. i love going into local multiplayer and turning on 9 bots and just duking it out.
that said, i have no intention of spending 60 dollars on it (because steam has me used to 5 dollar deals :v: ). gears multiplayer never interested me much, and i dont have my xbox at college with me, and i canceled my gold xbl subscription, because frankly i havent even touched my xbox (like, literally, havent even laid a finger on it) since i got my pc. if it ends up going below 20 bucks, i MIGHT pick it up when im back home this summer.
or port it to pc, have a steam sale with it, and then i might consider it too.

I don't think you would find many people to agree that Space Marine is better than Gears 3 outside of 40K enthusiasts. I'll give Space Marine credit for nailing the mindless gratification of wholesale slaughter, but I think Gears is a deeper, more tactical experience. I also don't like the health mechanic in Space Marine. Fuck the Black Eye skull in all its incarnations -- although I hear Space Marine is easy, so it's not a huge pain, for the most part.

Your not alone, I'm excited for this game and the amazon deal was just too good to pass up. I love the campaign on its first play through but to me it doesn't have much replay value. I mostly play Gears for the multiplayer and horde.

I think Gears is a deeper, more tactical experience.
Deeper? I dunno. SM is steeped in 40k backstory, but I haven't played the campaign yet so I can't judge the depth of its storyline. SM has to adhere to some limitations to try to stay true to canon (I think, am I right?). GoW 3 makes it's storyline up as it goes.
GoW 3 more tactical? Sorta, but not really. Space Marine has no cover system which is the only thing that's keeping it from being less "tactical" than Gears since you don't really get pinnned down and cling to specific objects. Gears isn't really tactical at all. With gears you can go to cover to avoid damage and get a few seconds to form some sort of strategy. In SM you hide behind a simple box and do the same thing, but you're more prone to getting hit due to the variety of weapons that can explode near you. It's for that reason that you're constantly thinking about what to do next more than the average GoW player. I'd say they are both on the same level tactically: slim to none.

Space Marine was actually quite accurate to it's canon *glares at Halo* You're also right about its "tactical" sense.

I love the story of Gears of War. I couldn't give two shits about the competitive multiplayer, but Horde mode is pretty damn fun. Hell, next to Firefight, I'd put Gears 2's Horde mode as my favorite "endless wave" gametype I've ever played.
Will pick this up once I've found a way to manage RAGE, Serious Sam 3, Space Marine and Battlefield 3.

This'll also be by first Xbox 360 purchase since Reach's release.

I think all of the Gears games are extremely boring and terrible in general.
Space Marine on the other hand is awesome, though the multiplayer could do with a few more levels and gametypes. Dedicated servers would be nice to.

I think what initially got me excited was a few weeks ago Cliff said they had learned the "I didn't sign up for this" lesson from Gears 2. That was my main beef with that game. They tried to force too many instances of not-Gears gameplay onto players and some of it was just bullshit on harder difficulties.
Now, Gears is kind of intense and it does need some change-up from time to time to keep it from feeling like a grind, but Gears 3 doesn't have any of those half-baked vehicle/creature piloting segments. Though, it does have on-rail/turret sections. As long as I don't have to defend a communications dish from being destroyed, I don't think I'm going to mind so much.

I think Gears is a deeper, more tactical experience.Maybe on the first playthrough in the campaign. And multiplayer boils down to A) whoever gets the boomshot or sniper rifle first, and B) who can dodge roll while spamming the shotgun best. I can't help but wonder if they've made any changes to multiplayer to make it more enjoyable, but I would like to grab this at least for the campaign and Horde mode.

So far, I'm liking the feel of the aiming. Gears 1 and 2 felt stiff to me. It was hard to make fine adjustments without bumping too far over. It doesn't seem like that's a problem anymore.

Been playing for a while with a friend. Pretty fun so far, and so far its a step up too Gow2. Hopefully it will raise my expectations to be better than Gow1. So far the gameplay is pretty good, but have only seen a handful of interesting encounters. Story is pretty good though so far and cinematics are very well done.
Also note: Music is brilliant.

Holy fucking shit, best Gears game. Way better than the second (I consider the second a really shitty game). It also had the most fitting story ever, and the ending was probably one of the best endings in videogame's I have seen in a while, let alone almost all the cutscenes. If anyone is hesitant about this game, get it. The level design, story telling, music, and everything else is simply beautiful.

Just beat it. If I had to point to an example of a modern game, Gears 3 would be it. It's pretty awesome. That Ice T song sucked dick, though.
My one regret is bitching out and playing it on Normal. Just way too easy, allowing you to play carelessly and lazily and get away with it. Hardcore here I come. TACTICS, bitches.
Oh, one thing did annoy me -- too many allies. One of the few modern game concepts that I don't like is the placeholder AI co-op characters. Just get out of my way and stop helping me up every time I'm being stupid and die. And quit fighting without me, while I'm exploring. At least they aren't invincible, but on Normal, they might as well be.

They tried to get too cute with the Gears 2 campaign. Instead of sticking with what works, they had a lot of one-off garbage (vehicles, environmental hazards, boss fights, etc). Gears 1 was better, because they weren't trying to do as much and Gears 3 was better because they knew exactly what they should and shouldn't do. Gears 2 isn't terrible; I just think it is far less replayable -- especially on harder difficulties -- than the other two. I beat it on Hardcore and I never want to do a solid 1/3rd of that game ever again, unless I bump down the difficulty. But if I do that, the core gameplay isn't as fun.

The multiplay was really bad (imo), and I found the campaign to not be as spectacular as the first.
The third definitely has some really good campaign parts, but so does the 1st. Both are very well done, and I cant decide which one is better. The multiplayer in gears 3 is pretty good though, but I wish they would go back to the server type multiplayer (but still also include like a quickmatch button) that was in Gears 1. It was awesome.

The Gears 1's 360 campaign felt like a bunch of stuff was missing -- a whole Act, as it turned out. And the aiming and movement controls are just much better in Gears 3. Gears 1 PC gave us the missing content and offered mouse control, which helped. But god damn it, that new Act ran like shit and every time I died, it would take 45 seconds to reload on my second run through the game (after reasonable reload times on my first run).

When has that ever happened? The only enemies that spawn behind you are Kryll and Wretches, nothing really game-breaking. Locust are already spawned by the time you enter a certain part of a level.

I dunno, pretty sure I recall locust suddenly coming out of doors behind me when I'm taking cover behind something. Besides the whole game just got repetitive and boring to me after the first few levels. It took me a long time to actually finish it because I kept getting bored and going to something else.

I don't remember it being a problem. But I do think Gears 1 was more of a grind than the other two. The battle music alone could wear me out. I still place it above Gears 2 because they didn't ask me to do (too many) dumb things.
Gears 3 is the most comfortable to play for long periods of time by far. It probably is the longest Gears game, but it feels like the shortest. After the first Act, I just blew right through it. It's super-polished.
They also finally found a way to convey story and emotion. Gears 1 was very confusing as to what I was doing and why on my first time through and Gears 2 was like Sideshow Bob in a field of rakes with all that Dom/Maria shit.
Higuy
September 25th, 2011, 08:08 PM
I disagree with Gears 1 not properly conveying the story. Gears 1, out of them all I think, felt like the best one that really represented in what low condition humanity was (Gears 3 did this well too, it also had a bit more emotion. But Gears 1 I think really conveyed the environments better, and was probably the scariest, which is what I originally thought Gears was all about). I also went back and played Gears 1 multiplayer today, and its pretty freaking awesome still. The maps in that game are far superior to these newer ones that Epic are producing. Maps like Clocktower, Fuel Depot, Mansion...

September 25th, 2011, 09:34 PM
I've always had beef with the cinematics in Gears 1. It feels like it was done by a couple college students in a rush for a project deadline, and in some cases I got lost in a cinematic worse than I'd get lost in a level. Pooky and I liked to joke that Cole's lines were ad-lib with a prompt in the scripts that said "(Cole says something useless here)". Oh, and the phrase "Contol, this is Delta" is forever burned into my memory. They'll probably be my dying words. The gameplay was great, though, and once I find my copy I'm going to be looking for some coop at some point in the future.
I liked the set pieces in Gears 2 and the cinematics felt better, though the whole story arc with Dom and Maria felt incredibly out of place. Here you are, fighting for your life against some ugly mofos that literally pop up out of the ground, and not flinching for a moment even when a boomshot explodes in your face or a comrade eats his shotgun barrel right in front of you, but someone mentions your missing wife and you suddenly break down into a heap of estrogen and tears. But fast forward two seconds and suddenly you're OK again. I think the only things that pissed me off in Gears 2 was the frozen lake of the vehicle segment and those mounted locust in Horde mode.
I would like to get this. I'm hearing good things.

Okay so I borrowed my friends copy, I've gotten somewhere near Act 2.
I don't get it, why haven't the locust ALWAYS launched themselves out of their grub holes? Why would you change that at the end of the series when the Locust no longer seem to be a serious threat. I'm so fucking terrified at the lambent that I just write the locust off as a small obstacle, especially if I have the Retro Lancer. Fuck it's inaccuracy, it does amazing damage, just burst fire it and it's probably my favorite gun in the game so far.
As I said the lambent terrify me. Whoever was in charge of Lambent "voices" and sound effects did an amazing job (as did the people who concepted, created and animated them). Every time they die, that wrenching howl and explosion is just amazing. Environments look slightly better, nothing that special coming from gears. I'll have more to say as I progress on.
