Well after having my old drive for knows how long (probably over 8 years considering how big it is and how little space it carries...), I think it's time to get a new external. What external should I look into getting? I'm looking for one that isn't expensive and at least works well. Don't want to end up getting something that's cheap and ends up breaking on me in two days you know. :-3

Two-drive external enclosure that will let you run two drives in RAID-1. Then get a couple of these:

They're amazing drives. 5,900 RPM is my new favorite for storage.

Try to get E-Sata as well if you have the ports.

As a digital media major working in the labs for years now, I've come to the conclusion that I only care about two things when it comes to external drives. What shape is the fucking thing (is it likely to tip over and screw you in the worst possible way) and does it use an external power source? Drives that stand up vertically look pretty cool, but if they tip over while you read/write you're gonna be pretty mad. It was pretty important for me to have an external power source for mine since some asshole was going around breaking the grounds to USB ports in the labs, but that stopped once we got a hardware refresh. Now, the external power is just a pain in the ass. Either get a self-powered drive through USB 3.0 or eSATA. And keep your connection options open to at least USB so you can access the drive on the most basic of machine. Definitely pay more attention to how the drive connects than how many TB it has.

are you looking for a compact one that doesn't require a power source or 2 USB ports (2.5") or a big one that you can directly run stuff off with no lag (3.5")?
