who here has been watching the developments with the X79 chipset?
I've just been looking this stuff up and there's quite a few cool features.
32bit ram limit you say?
Asrock has just put a massive "fuck you" to that 4gig limit.

X79 will become interesting only after the i7-3840 comes out. Better performance than the 2600K for $15 less and with motherboards 10x better than Z68 platform can offer.

I read an article on techspot today where Gigabyte released a BIOS update for the X79 boards they make. Apparently one guy killed his board by OC'ing or something. He made a video of it, too.

Yeah, known issue. Common misinterpretation is that it is a hardware issue. It's not, as evidenced by said firmware update.

looking at that video, my cpu cooler would 100% cover at LEAST half of my dimm slots. >_>
what i don't get, is these are apparently OVERCLOCK focussed boards.
shouldn't they consider the fact some users have big damn cpu coolers, and place the DIMM slots NOT right next to the damn CPU?
i've got a MSI P55/GD66m and every time i have to mess with my RAM, i have to take the fan off the heatsink to be able to even get to them.

Trolls assume you are using watercooling for extreme overclocking.

Yeah you'd be watercooling or using one of the newer coolers that take RAM height considerations into account. A lot of the new coolers sit the fans up higher so memory will fit under them.
Just looking at the live demo in that video though, that looks like a Thermalright Ultra 120 coolerw/12mm fan. It's not interfering with the RAM slots at all and it looks like they could even add a second fan to the other side. The Thermalright is a damn big cooler, and if you're using anything larger than it you're better off just getting an integrated watercooling solution like the Corsair Hydro series coolers.
I'm really liking that high end board, so many SATA 3 slots!!

I actually wish the i7-8320 was out now. I'd jump on X79 in a heartbeat then, if only for the fact that it will have a slightly longer life than both LGA 1155 and AM3+.
