And they already reached their goal of $400,000 in less than 24 hours.
No publisher looking over their shoulder, the creator of the genre is co-heading it, and the fans will be participating the whole way through.
This is AWESOME.

Being that they actually had someone donate $10,000 I'm not surprised.

This is what that gets me in the industry.
Big games cost big money. Even something as "simple" as an Xbox LIVE Arcade title can cost upwards of two or three million dollars. For disc-based games, it can be over ten times that amount.
Surely with retail games costing that much, it should wittle down these absolutely diabolical games that hit the selfs and completely bomb. You know the awful games you dont even think about ever owning.

Ron is also responsible for Maniac Mansion, Putt-Putt, Pajama Sam, Freddie Fish, Deathspank, Total Annihilation and Penny Arcade on a Rainslick Precipice of Darkness. He literally created the entire genre of point and click adventure.

oh dear
Well, you see, way back in way old old old days, there was a game genre called the point-and-click adventure. You pointed and clicked to move, to interact, to speak, etc., and solving (often contrived and unintuitive) puzzles was about the extent of the gameplay. Consequently, the genre sold itself on excellent writing and charming character, exemplified by, among other examples, Monkey Island (Ron Gilbert).
Tim Schafer cut his game design teeth in the same genre (see Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango), and since then, his studio (Double Fine) has basically been an industrial grade under-the-radar cult-hit factory, responsible for such things as the more recent Psychonauts and Brutal Legend.
Basically you've got the guy responsible for some of the most kick-ass games nobody ever buys and the guy responsible for some of the funniest and most intelligent p&c adventure games teaming up to make a project completely open to the public and free of meddling publishers - and the gaming community more than doubled their in-a-month donation expectations within less than two days. Awesome stuff.
