View Full Version : Konami's New Rendering Engine

Pretty awesome. (http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/gdc2012/fe_question_en.html)
Note: Click the link, choose your language and then close the tab and click the link again.
Guess which one is real life and guess which one is the realtime-rendering FOX engine:

left, small pictures =/= realism.

It's obvious, look at the back of the chairs.

left, small pictures =/= realism.
It's obvious, look at the back of the chairs.
The framed posters on the second one are suffering from clear aliasing, the table isn't reflecting everything properly, the flourescent lights on the top don't have the same glow (and along with the vents they're quite flat), the black chairs on the 4th picture are too bright, the shadows of the red ones in the same picture are too uniform and clear (only one or two shadows/object, or just one or two dynamic lights?), and that's just what I noticed immediately
I mean it's not obviously ugly or anything, but if you want to impress, you'll need to do more than a 345x231 image of a small, well-lit conference room, especially when it comes to other engine things ex. how much of the shadowing/radiosity is dynamic (if any), physics and environmental interaction, LOD-systems and such for more open areas, animation, and so on

Shadowing (look at the ones being casted from the chairs) is meh as well.

You should've put two sets of the real one so people would look for the difference of the same picture.

It's mostly the aliasing that caught my eye. On the TV. Looks neat though.

March 3rd, 2012, 02:10 PM
Good. At least everyone applied logic to find the correct one. The one on the left is real and the one on the right is the FOX engine. For what it is, it's a remarkable engine they have there. Maybe the next Metal Gear Solid game will use it.

No I won't argue with that. It does look really good.

Read the site again, and according to it, "no lightmaps are used in the rendering process," so apparently the lighting is completely and fully dynamic in every way; neat
again, the super-low resolution and small, basic, closed-off environment make it difficult to really judge things but at least ^ is pretty cool
E: Although those red chairs make me wonder if the modeler was just a lazy arse or if they're actually having to watch polycount that closely due to said lighting; hopefully the former

The engine is okay, but not revolutionary by anymeans. It's still very easy to tell apart reality from CGI.

Yeah, I was thinking mostly the same thing. This is just one demonstration. I'll be won over with many more plus live demonstrations.

It's really easy to tell the difference between this and CGI because in this case CGI looks less real (if you ignore the chair model and aliasing on the posters).
If we were to ask the average person which set of images were real, I'm sure most would have a hard time discerning which is the fake one.

I don't think that's a valid excuse though. We, the people who deal with this daily, should at least look at it and be like "I remember the first few times looking at that and thinking it was real life....or at least close to it."

You're honestly going to tell me you looked at the images and knew right off the bat which was which just by looking at it? I know I didn't so I had to go looking for the usual signs of a game engine versus real life (aliasing, lighting, etc.).

Yes, I suppose perhaps I have too keen an eye for it. I apologize for sounding crass and over-assertive from before, then.
Amit
March 4th, 2012, 09:34 PM
Na, don't worry about it. You seem adamant that you can tell the difference right off the bat. I'm not you so I don't know what you're seeing. Your brain must be thinking to look for such differences right away. I always like to compare the two sets with quick glances to see if they are difficult to tell a part at first glance before really analyzing them.

The colour vibrancy was the first cue that told me which was which, the other was that the ceiling was flat.

March 5th, 2012, 07:05 PM
Yeah, my roommate showed me this the other day and I couldn't tell the difference between the two and actually guessed that the one on the left was fake. Now that you guys pointed all the modeling errors and aliasing, it's pretty obvious which one is real and which one isn't, but when you're not thinking to look for that stuff, they both look pretty damn convincing.

I knew immediately because my eyes were drawn to the completely fake looking backs of the chairs, then to the differences in shadows. Shadows have always needed work.

i thought the colours for the portraits where off
that was the first thing i saw.
i saw the backs of the chairs a bit later

What cued me in was that the shadows from the chairs on the ground were pretty sharp, which is very unrealistic in a room with ceiling fluorescent lighting. It does look pretty good though. Like everyone else, I'll wait to see better examples.

Well a new extended gameplay trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeros was shown the other day:
http://www.ign.com/videos/2012/09/01/metal-gear-solid-ground-zeroes-extended-14-minute-demo
The in-game cutscenes are so smooth that it looks pre-rendered. I was starting to think it was, but with a gameplay look instead, but then it went right into the gameplay and I was like "shit those are some smooth in-engine cinematics."

Didn't think to post it here, but there was a tech demo a couple weeks ago.

They've really kicked ass getting good tools written to make use of the engine.
