View Full Version : My PC Is Dying!?

Sorry for the dramatic title, but I think my pc is dying an annoying slow death.

Heres the deal, in the past week my pc has suddenly cut power. I know its not a mains power or my power strip being the issue as my monitors remain on (and asking for input).

It has happened twice today, and just now it gave worse results. The keyboard and mouse (they have lights :D) went out, input to my monitors went, however the fans in the computer were still whirling and lighting up. This leads me to believe either the mobo is packing in (which I really hope it isnt). Or the PSU is having some sort capacitor issue and some of the power wires from the unit stopped getting power, whilst others did.

I am thinking of making a new pc, but I'd still like this to run so I can give it to someone else, my PSU is in warranty but my mobo I can't return (long story, but this is a different mobo to the one I bought).

I'm thinking of just RMA'ing the psu in 2 weeks when I go on holiday and I was just wondering if you think it could actually be the mobo instead.

Brief Specs
Mobo: Intel Desktop Board DG41RQ (I know, kills me too).
PSU: Ocz XStream 600W

Edit:
Bit of backstory (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?22205-Broken-Hard-Drive-Time-for-new-MoBo)if you need it.

Sounds like the PSU to me.

Yeah, sounds like the PSU before I had to replace mine. Get something reliable like a 650w or 750w by Corsair, their super nice and and work really well, at least from my experience. I currently use a 750w.

SOUNDS like psu-thing.
if you can just RMA the fucker, i'd go with that, best to try the least-costly solution first.

I would H/O if I were you. I had a similar issue, and I discovered that since my computer is 1. custom built, and 2. a tower, the graphics card was falling out of its PCI slot. The thing would turn on, but nothing would display on the screen.

I'd give advice, but I don't want to get sued if you damage your computer, or end up shocking yourself. I don't know how computer savvy you are, not saying you're stupid or anything.

Throw it out the air lock.I'm going to need some clarification.

Thanks for the feedback, I just hope it lasts out 2 weeks, I'll be in a jam if I cant use my pc.

If you want to check your PSU get a cheap tester from maplin or test with a multi-meter to check that the voltages are correct.
12V rail tends to be the first go tits up.

Isn't that a little dangerous? I don't want to get electrocuted. Which ones are the 12v, the like molex connector ones? (Used for fans/IDE hard drives?)

I live in a padded cell, cant throw it out a window.

It's only dangerous if you don't know how to go about it safely.
Molex connectors mouse wires for 12V and 5V as well as two ground wires.

Looking at maplin, they seem to charge you out the ass for the testers, the one i've got is shown there for £25...i only paid about 9.99 for mine few years back.
