It says "system malfunction" every time I try and log in. Is anyone else having this problem at this time? If not I'll hop on over to the site.

This is an intentional message. XFire is closing their services. They've finally decided to enter the new age of technology.

it's a relic of times gone by

once steam introduced steam community, that was it for xfire. steam does basically everything it did, except more efficiently, with a much better interface and from the same program you use to launch your games. there hasn't really been much reason to use xfire since about 2007, maybe 2008 at latest.

I like steam more but that's not true at all. Xfire had an inbuilt server browser for pretty much any game you ever wanted to play (something I've seen from no other program) and is actively developed with compatibility in mind (steam literally can't give a fuck about third party programs run through the client). It also has a cool video recording/hosting feature which steam can't hold a candle to (they only got online screenshot support in 2011 ).

Don't forget integration with other instant messengers and live streaming.

This is why I still keep Xfire around, mainly when I want to record or screenshot anything Steam won't. It's a nifty program, especially considering it's completely free.

I only use Xfire now because a lot of JK2 players still use it. When I stopped using it a few years ago it was because it started getting a little too bloated for my liking. It was starting to actually slow down my games on my crappy old PC. Having started using it again recently, I will say it's improved quite a bit since then.

I stopped using xfire when I kept getting spammed to help "test out" maps of people who made a single-value change to stock shaders on primatives

I was going to mention that! Not only does it have video recording/hosting (its hosts anything you take out of the game, screenshots, videos, it has automatic game updates for any game!), but it also has streaming. You know streaming, like letting people watch you play worldwide, as you play? You can create communities, it even has a small blogging feature (which no one ever uses)! I keep it around because my friends and I have used it for ages. I also like to take screenshots and videos.

I prefer Xfire over steam, though I have steam and some games to go with it. I do not like steam for a number of reasons I won't go into. Xfire even has a Dlable game store, at least last I checked.

Its so amazing, everyone should use it!

The video and broadcasting feature was inefficient, I lagged a lot playing games and recording, and this computer is very young. I dropped it for a few months, and when I came back it was so freaking fast! I think they changed it to be more efficient, because I accidentally hit the record key, and didn't even notice the difference!

And lastly, where the hell are you going to get a good, quality, free game recording program?!

Oh, xfire working again. On the xfire forums other people had with issues to.

Oh shit, I didn't think I was playing with your emotions. I'm truly sorry.

Steam's non-steam game support is excellent and you can use the web browser once you bring up the overlay. XFire does have it's streaming ability which is pretty cool, but the quality is pretty shit to be honest. And since the LIVE service is powered by Twitch TV, you can't really credit Xfire for that...much.

Even so, I don't understand why people hate it. I don't see a real use for it, but it's handy for older games that allow direct join to a server from friends.

i just stopped using xfire because it was no longer necessary. i only used it to talk to like, 3 people, and i kept getting friend requests from random halomaps people who thought they were entitled to my 3d skills. it got to the point where i would only start xfire to log my game play time and take screen shots, but fraps and steam both handle the screen shot thing, and steam handles game play time logs, so xfire is basically obsolete for me.

i use skype and steam exclusively now.

xfire used to be awesome.

the biggest problem with it is that newer games have their community connections built in already.

if you play halo it's still great, but for things like TF2 ect it's horrible

You can use steam with halo.

xfire is slow and glitchy I don't understand why anyone likes it. Even its gui is cheezy.

it also has streaming.

Can stream at quadruple the quality of what xfire can handle too.

I don't think that's what people meant, it's more than just having an overlay to chat in and surf the web. Steam doesn't allow you to direct-join games for non-steam titles while Xfire does. I don't use Xfire much nowadays but I still launch it when my buddies want to play older games like Halo and COD4. Hell, I have COD4 on Steam but the game isn't Steamworks which makes Xfire quite helpful as a substitute (not to mention enabling the Steam overlay can trigger Punkbuster false kicks while Xfire's doesn't).

Nowadays a lot of non-steamworks games have built-in friends list features, so Xfire is more or less irrelevant for new games though (unless you take into account pirated copies that have cracked servers).
