I saw something really disturbing on TV last night and realized it seemed to be common place. I was hoping you guys could clarify this for me: What room does the clothes washing machine go in?

We call it either the Utility Room or the Laundry Room. Depends on what the contents of the room are aside from laundry machines.
Currently, our are in our garage.

from what ive seen, there doesnt seem to be any cultural norm in the US.
-my mother has the laundry machines in the far end of one of the bathrooms
-my friend has the laundry machines a closet in the bathroom of the second floor (understandably, since thats where the bedrooms all are),
-my other friend has the laundry in his bathroom (maybe i spoke too soon about cultural norms, lol), except that ones on the first floor despite all the bedrooms being on the second floor
-yet another friend's laundry is in a closet off of the bathroom on the first floor
-another friend's laundry is an alcove off of the dining room, across from the kitchen
-my grandmother has the laundry machines in a separate area of the basement, right near the pantry (its an old house though)
-and my old house had the laundry in an odd area in the basement. finished basement with a hallway going from the landing at the foot the stairs to an office, and on either side of that hallway were those wooden "folding" door things that would slide open. on one side we had the furnace, and on the other side we had the laundry. when that office became my bedroom, sometimes i would have to shove the door open due to the laundry stacking so high in front of it, lol.
those are all rural / suburban layouts though. i dont know any city folk, so i cant comment on that.
it seems like a function of the age of the house and what ecosystem you live in. for example, my cousin lives right on a pond whose edge is normally a good 30 feet away from his house, but when it rains, it comes right up to the back door. the ground is always wet, meaning water drainage is handled differently, and therefore you are limited to where you can put the machine (as in, it must be at equal or above level to the drainage system, because gravity). also if you add expansions to the house, what was one a laundry room at the end of the house might now be a laundry room in the living room.
i realize you were asking about the UK, but i figured id chime in too. this is an interesting discussion.

Mine are in my utility room! In my last house they were in a little room that seperated the kitchen + garage, and my first house they were in the basement/garage in a small room.
p.s i live in the U.S

(in the UK they do indeed have their washing machines in their kitchen if that's what you were wondering about)

It's like that in some colleges here in the U.S. as well. I'm guessing it's easier to have that sort of plumbing/waterstuff done in one location.

In my old house we had ours in the utility room, along with the dryer. I think people nowadays the washer in the kitchen, and the dryer in a garage.
Why were you shocked by the way?

This is because you live in rhode island and nothing has ever been normal there.
In california it seems based on the size of the house. Bigger houses usually have a separate room, smaller ones tend to have their laundry machines in the hallway linked to the garage.
