It's here. Time to yell in frustration at overloaded servers while merrily emptying wallets. And please ignore the MW3 $30 sale for the sake of the industry standards :)
Just nabbed the Bethesda collection to get Skyrim and a bunch of other titles I'd overlooked. Also Total War Shogun 2 though I need to finish Empire first before I get around to it.

Further news: Now the community is allowed to vote on the next game to get a steep discount of its own (> 50%) every 8 hours. Right now it's between Saints Row 3, The Witcher 2, or Batman Arkham City. I say vote for The Witcher 2.
Looking to get Assassins Creed Revelations (confirmed no draconian DRM on that one) when it gets more than 33% off.

GET IT.
and The Missing Link DLC was pretty good too.
Also, anyone know what the Badges are for? They don't seem to be giving me any rewards (at least not yet). Still, the objectives are super easy and don't require you to own games so I''ll just do them.

Payday The Heist is currently $4.99 (or $15 for the 4 pack). Would highly recommend it, especially if you're a fan of games like L4D and Borderlands. It has a few rough edges as a relatively low budget game, but it's a hell lotta fun.
But the highlight deal is:

For $30, can't go wrong.

That was the game that had a set number of hardware changes before it locked you out wasn't it?
Donut
July 13th, 2012, 06:50 PM
yeah anno 2070 is the game with the bullshit 3 hardware change restriction before it flat out locks you out of the game.
E: also, voted for metro 2033 on the current poll. if you enjoyed bioshock or stalker, you need to play this game. its post-nuclear russian bioshock in the future, with better guns. potentially for 5 bucks. the attention to detail is pretty impresive too. for example, i shot a guy in the head one time, and he doubled over in pain, but didnt die. i was like "wut", but then i noticed his helmet. helmets actually block bullets. you can do similar things with gas masks too.
also, its fucking beautiful and a great stress test for your pc, because i think to date, battlefield 3 possibly excluded, it is the most resource intensive game on the market.
Mr Buckshot

They removed the PCIe slots from the hardware id (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/01/21/ubisoft-bluebyte-changes-anno-2070-drm/) in the DRM for 2070 back in Jan. Still, don't think I'm going to support Ubishit's "Not a bug, it's a feature" DRM bullshit (as are others (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2565559)). Sorry BlueByte, kiss my ass.

Liking the Metro 2033 love in here. Highly under rated game. Who's looking forward to Last Light?
Donut
July 14th, 2012, 01:08 AM
last light may be the first game i pay full price for on steam. i cannot fucking wait for it.
also, payday the heist is 5 bucks. i just played a round on single player, and so far im pretty impressed. its like a tactical shooter with a lot of left 4 dead elements in it. you can get upgrades like ammo bags, medic bags, new weapons, and squad specializations. its like if battlefield and left 4 dead had a child that grew up in the streets and now wants to rob a bank.
what is alan wake like btw? the game with dlc is on sale for 10 bucks. it looked interesting, but im on the fence.

It's another seriously story driven Remedy game. Kinda weird shooting elements, frustrating at times. Would recommend watching some youtube vids of the first few levels to get an idea of what the game is like, because it's really love it or hate it.
as for payday, seriously underrated, and really should have been done on the Source engine (so that we could make custom levels) but the stock 6 levels are pretty fun and replayable.

Oh.lol. I never know when Steam sells are and I'm very picky with the video games I buy to begin with. For example, out of this year I plan on buying Halo 4 and then the other maybes will go out to FFXIII-2 or Pokemon White. Mind you, these are all for when I get discounts too.
STILL, I do like picking up games from sales that I need to play, like Portal 2 or Half-Life (episodes included). It's just that whenever these sales go on I either just spent my money on other stuff or am about to spend my money on something else.

I place some money into my Steam Wallet every now and then specially for sales (especially with currency conversion being so volatile). Unfortunately, this summer's sale had very little to offer me (due to not many new games coming out lately), whereas 2011's steam sale more or less DOUBLED the size of my Steam library.

I was about to buy Toy Soldiers after seeing the video. Then I saw this:
3rd-party DRM: Games for Windows Live
never mind then. I do have a 360 that I rarely touch except for Halo and Forza, so I might check it out on that system instead.

I'd actually paid $40 for it over the Christmas sale, and I fucking love the game.

July 15th, 2012, 03:23 PM
I payed the full $60 and got a hard copy because I love getting the game casings for the simply nostalgia that comes from going in to stores to buy games. I was actually just playing it a good bit today, but I've hit one of those funks where you're not entirely certain what to do (my 3rd run-through of the game) mainly because you usually have to be in a mood to explore Skyrim fully. Also, mods make you paranoid as hell. :tinfoil:
Also, it's difficult to add Quest mods because Skyrim is really bad about them. Simply put, it has a very limited memory for extra good quests put into it, so here's hoping the DLC (if it's on the PC at all) has reservations in that memory.
Donut
July 15th, 2012, 03:33 PM
skyrim... is bad at quest mods? you mean like, main quest mods? or mods that simply add quests? because i know morrowind was miserable sometimes when it comes to mods, in terms of fixing save files when mods get removed, but ive seen people add tons of shit to that game, including entire new islands with their own entire quest

Got Cave Story with the first Indie Bundle. I have to say, I haven't been this engrossed by a game in a LONG time. I beat the whole thing in one sitting before realizing I hadn't even stopped to shit the entire time. The characters were well written enough that by the end of the story I actually cared what happened to them.
The gameplay should be immediately comfortable for anyone who's used to Metroid and Castlevania style sidescrolling adventure games. What really sets it apart is how well everything is paced. There wasn't one point where I was bored or at a loss as to where to go or what to do, but there was still plenty of off the rails exploring and things to find.

It's the ESPs and how they affect the Skyrim's memory allocation. The more mods you have, even simple ones, the more it stacks. Quests additions are the heaviest of the ESPs, thus each one is a hefty load for the Skyrim memory. It's easy to have too many Quest Additions and then you simply can't load the game past the main menu. If you don't have a lot of loaded mods, though, you'll be fine for quests. I think I have about 20 mods loaded right now, so it'd make sense that the memory wouldn't be eaten up. Still, I'm kind of annoyed that it can't handle more. Oh well, you can only ask so much regarding functionality with Bethesda.
@Korn/Warlord: The same happens with me. It's just Skyrim/Bethesda. New Vegas does the exact same thing.

If it recycles the Max Payne 3 engine (hopefully), I'd say pretty good chance of that. More concerned about moddability though (LA Noire and Max payne 3 have been bad signs regarding that).

about NFS, I boycott all EA racing games because they've taken out split screen on consoles for a long time. I only buy racing games on consoles because split screen is my favorite way to play.

Adding on to that, the Ultimate Edition (which is contains all DLC and Add-Ons) is only $5 more for $9.99. You save about ten dollars worth of add-ons (in the Steam Summer Sale, more if you miss buying the Ultimate Edition now) and DLC. New Vegas is a real good game, but be prepared for looking through forums for ways to optimize it.

If I were to buy just one of the STALKER games, which one should I get? Would I miss out on plot stuff if I just skipped the first 2?
no. the games seem kind of mutually exclusive, story wise. actually, clear sky is set as a prequel to shadow of chernobyl. i havent played call of pripiyat yet, but so far clear sky has been an improvement over shadow of chernobyl. lots of cool little new things added. id play them in order, so you can experience the upgrades between SoC and clear sky, otherwise SoC might be a real bitch to play for you.
do not attempt to max it out though, lol. the game is horribly optimized, and ends up being more resource intensive than battlefield 3 when you max it out, despite making zero visual difference. case in point: god rays.

July 20th, 2012, 04:47 AM
Call of Pripyat is the most refined experience in the series, so if you want just one, get that one. It's also the prettiest.
As for being horribly optimized, it's not that bad. I could max it out at 1280x1024 (no AA though) with a Radeon HD5770 and still get 30-50 fps just fine. The light shafts, aka "god rays" appear only under the right conditions, same as real life. Check it out at sunset or sunrise by peering through the branches of a tree and strafing left and right. Lightning also casts them. It really does add something to the game's fantastic atmosphere.

far cry 1 is awesome yeah. Loved that game, even re-bought it on Steam despite having a physical copy from 2005.
far cry 2 ... well, it had a lot of wasted potential IMO. The first impressions are amazing (feels really immersive), and the graphics still hold up pretty well. But the gameplay mechanics had a lot of flaws, such as the stupid malaria, and the worst part, the respawning guard checkpoints. There's a lot of impressive things about the game, but they just didn't come together that well into one package. Maybe Far Cry 3 will correct the gameplay flaws, who knows.

San Andreas is the best GTA game running on the RenderWare engine. The modding alone on it is just so much fun. I spend hours looking at mods online to make the game look prettier or just run the Emergency Light Mod on ELM enabled cars. I mostly play around with the aircraft, though. For me, GTA exists for modding. The story is usually good, but I have much more fun playing it as a sandbox game than playing missions. I would play GTA 4 if the game wasn't so poorly optimized. I'm waiting another few years before I install it again, so my hardware at that time might actually be able to run ICEnhancer. Hopefully GTA 5 will be uber optimized and ripe for modding.
I didn't grab too many things this year:
Mount & Blade Warband: Napoleonic Wars DLC
Upgraded existing Trine 2 to Collector's Edition
Just Cause 2 + All DLC
ARMA II Operation Arrowhead: Private Military Company DLC (for high-resolution textures in DayZ)

For the love of god, stop bitching about the Ubisoft DRM. Bitch at PC gamers in general for being the most finicky bunch of fucktards in the world.
Ubisoft completely stripped their DRM from a few games after the AC2 always-on out-rage. Those games made almost no profit since they were pirated so much. The DRM came back in a lesser capacity, and it's at the point right now that if you're a legitimate customer it's not a hassle. I haven't had any problems with it, on either side of the fence.
I own all the AC games and I've never had an issue. I also pirated a lot of the AC games before buying them without issue. So, if you're a pirate it doesn't affect you, if you're a legitimate customer it also doesn't affect you. It affects no one, so stop complaining.

partly agree with this. I got gifted the Assassins Creed collection and previously I thought I didn't like it (first game was repetitive) but I finally played the sequels and enjoyed them a lot more than I did the first.
So yes - there's no always-online DRM this time, for ALL ubisoft games. Meaning if you lose your internet connection, you don't get booted from the game. Will credit Ubisoft for doing that at the very least.
However, the uPlay system can be annoying. I remember during the sale, it got overloaded with product key registrations and crashed, so many players couldn't start their new games. Sounds kinda ridiculous to have to register the product key AGAIN after you've already bought it on steam, especially if the game is single player.
So is the Ubisoft DRM tolerable now? Yes. But is it still annoying? Yes. It may be far from the worst, but that doesn't make it any more welcome.

DRM and GFWL have never bothered me past Fallout 3's GFWL and Skyrim's DRM, mostly because I've learned to cope with both of these features. GFWL works well for my computer on most games (except Fallout 3 for whatever reason) and if a game requires internet connection to play then I'll simply do something else or play another game if I can't play it.

Alright let's just forget he posted before this turns into a shit flinging jamboree.
The UPlay system is a bit shoddy. In February, Ubisoft moved their UPlay servers and as a result I wasn't able to play HAWX 2 for days. I never did play HAWX 2 again after that. I just lost interest, I guess. I probably wouldn't if I wasn't barred from playing my fucking offline game because a log in system was down.

agreed, even though uPlay is now not as awful as the original always-online incarnation, there is no reason to defend its existence. Steam already serves the intended purpose (online activation, locking the game to one account) so uPlay is just not needed at all. Sure it's far less of a nightmare than securom etc but that's saying a handful of shit is less gross than a mountain of shit. Less gross doesn't mean not gross.
anyway, I just checked my transaction history on Steam, then checked my account on this website:
http://www.steamcalculator.com/
Since 2009 I've spent a bit under $500 on Steam games, and that includes the odd $50 pre-order every now and then. The steamcalculator website shows my account would be worth over $3,500 if I'd bought every game at the current full price (as of 2012, not the price when the game released - so I'm estimating closer to $4,000 if the release-date price is used).
Hurray for Steam sales!

You guys do realize that uPlay isn't technically the DRM platform. It's just a content distribution system. The DRM is wholey its own thing on a game-by-game/case-by-case basis.
Also, the Steam servers themselves were barely able to distribute games during the Summer Sale. Why not point that out as well?

Because you were still able to play the games you'd already installed, maybe in offline mode.
What people are complaining about is that they'd bought uPlay games from Steam, installed them, then ended up unable to play due to requiring a completely unneeded authentication from uPlay.
It is completely different from being unable to install games during the heavy load - that tends to be expected with any kind of downloading service. It's more like inserting a disc into your console to find that it's unplayable.

Never had any problems installing any games off Steam during the sale, including massive ones like Just Cause 2.

If you have problems downloading massive games during sales then just switch your download region.

I usually have problems when I'm at home, but when I go to college things are a good bit quicker. It really depends on your Router/Modem/Connection speed rather than your region (considering how traffic intensive college is versus home).

I know the summer sale is over, but we don't really have a general Steam thread so I'm just gonna poop this here
If you got to the Store page and look at the "new" releases, guess what game of yesteryears finally made it to Steam? KOTOR2! 10 dolla.

I heard their modding community put that together as a game completion mod using a lot of the original assets and storylines that were originally supposed to be in-game.

One of the Xbox1 debug kits I accquired way back in the day had a debug build of KOTOR2 on it (in-game debug menu and all). It made me kind of want to get into KOTOR modding action, but then the 360 came out and fucking BioWare had to start crapping out Ass Effects since, AFAIK, LucasArts wanted to make KOTOR into that MMO bullshit. Fuck that noise.

The sad part is that I actually like the SWTOR story lines... They aren't half bad. Will be playing the shit out of it when it goes Free2Play since the single-player PVE portion is all I really give a fuck about.

Except they never actually finished it and instead just cock teased the community for years on end.

Both KotOR games were on for $2.49 earlier. Were part of a flash sale so I'm not sure if they still are. I grabbed KotOR II on Steam since it was only added a few months ago and I like digital copies of stuff.
EDIT: Ends in 11 minutes hurry up!

Max Payne 3 for $14.99 - way too damn good to pass up. Loved this game. And on the technical side it really is a true PC game as well, almost enough to make you forget GTAIV.
I'm considering getting Arma 2 due to all the Day Z hype... going to check out Youtube first.

Good choice for Arma II, no longer a good choice if you wanted to play DayZ. Standalone will be out in less than a month, but at least you get one of the best shooters ever made and a heavy discount on DayZ when its released for owning CO.

Not a Steam sale, but on Gamersgate, Dishonored is $29.98 today and as a Steamworks game buying outside Steam will still give you a Steam key. I got it as a gift and I LOVED that game - currently on my third playthrough in fact. Anyone who enjoyed Deus Ex Human Revolution will also enjoy this game for sure.

really? When I played the game I kept going "whoa this is just like DXHR". Maybe that's just me.
Also, screw the Steam sale - hop onto green man gaming and use their 25% discount code to stack on existing deals. Getting Dishonored and Skyrim for $22.50 apiece and having them register on Steam? Take that Steam!

Sins Rebellion is fairly fun, really the only difference is that they added some more Diplomacy stuff and the Titan class ships though. Some different game modes too IIRC. Still, pretty fun.

metro is worth the full 20 dollars it usually goes for on steam, and this is coming from somebody who usually has scathing criticism for highly regarded video games. youd have to be nuts to not at least try it for free. if youre into first person shooters but want a deeper experience with a LOT of attention to detail, i promise youll love metro. and hey, if you dont, ill personally refund your money.
... you know, because its free :v:
