First time I've heard of this to be quite honest. Hope this goes well! Would be cool to learn a bit more about Mars.

There have been a couple of TV specials. It's one of the biggest things the science community has to try and drive funding for future events. The sheer logistics of it are more complicated and intense than any military operation ever yet the budget for such things is abysmal.

I was going ape shit over that. It's so fucking crazy that we not only had a soft landing on the surface of another planet, but we had two images broadcasted back to us before people had a chance to finish congratulating everyone.

This is awesome. It's incredible how this unbelievably complex landing sequnce worked flawlessly. I don't remember the exact number off the top of my head, but they said during the live stream that the touchdown velocity was something like a few thousands of a m/s. The landing couldn't have been more gentle.
And then within minutes of its confirmed landing, we received the first pictures.
And as Colbert put it,
we know what's happening on mars sooner than NBC can tell us what's happening in London.

those are from the hazard cams and being beamed up while odyssey is overhead
once curiosity is on the side of the planet facing us again, we should get better photos from the Real Cameras

Pretty sure they did the "HD" cam after the thumbnail (256x256).
rossmum
August 6th, 2012, 04:20 AM
no, that was simply a higher res transmission of the same image, keep up
odyssey was only overhead for a very limited amount of time and they had other data that was actually more important coming through, so they had to make do with thumbnails that wouldn't take up their limited window of both bandwidth and time
Zeph
August 6th, 2012, 04:24 AM
Yeah, at this point, images over the next couple of days are going to be showing up when there's spare bandwidth. When they deploy the main antennae it'll be able to broadcast much more to us.

As planned, the rover's early engineering images are lower resolution. Larger color images from other cameras are expected later in the week when the rover's mast, carrying high-resolution cameras, is deployed. Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

jesus you people, don't you know anything?
the first images you saw were from the hazard-cams, they're just there to make sure it landed properly, and is sitting properly on the ground, and not upside down or some shit.
they don't need HD iamges for that.
these are from minicams that are mounted on teh front and back and look down at the wheels.
the actual full spectrum and HD camera's etc are on the top, and would never be able to upload in the short amount of time they had to bounce the signal of the odyssey orbiter before it moved behind the mountain they're going to explore.
expect bigger images soon.

must be so frustrating controlling something with a 7 min lag xD or even 14 minutes...to receive the correct response.
neuro
August 6th, 2012, 09:57 AM
well the things has up to 2 days worth of shit to do programmed into it, so even if it doesn't get a connection from earth, it'll still load around doing whatever, for 2 days, after which it'll go into a type of safemode, wondering where the fuck it's orders are.
also they upload scripts to it one at a time, which basically get qued up in order, so they don't actually 'control' dick, they upload a script, and it does what it's told.
it's more of a point-and-click adventure than a first person shooter.
