It an invasion of privacy, although they will just keep using the same dumb argument "its for national security".

I figured there was already something like this for the longest time, suprised its just now popping up.

Uh clearly it is a NECESSARY MEASURE to make sure the ISLAMIC TERRORISTS do not implement Sharia Law and rape our women and children and if you do not support it fully you are a TERRORIST and should be SHOT

honestly at this point i am fairly convinced that al-qaeda could stand to learn a lot about terrorism from the united states government

Oh I thought I was supposed to be concerned lol.

Actually I still am. I always knew those fucking cameras that check for red lights were for spying on us.

I'm sure the software probably cost a fair bit, but the actual infrastructure required to carry this stuff out is pretty inexpensive. (Cameras have gotten so widely available that almost everyone has one these days, doubt it'd be that difficult for a city, state, or country to get a lot of them easily.)

It seems like the network isn't that huge

But fuck those traffic cameras scare me now. I FUCKING KNEW IT!!!

Not yet, but the fact that something like this exists even on a relatively small scale is still a matter of concern.

I really don't care if the gov't knows my whereabouts right now, mainly because I'm doing nothing to deserve their attention. But that's just me. I'm someone who could give a fuck less on what people think of me in terms of sensitive things. But yeah, I thought this was kind of common sense.

would you be concerned if they banned human gatherings and protests and used the cameras to know everything and shut it down before any resistance was possible?

think of the power these fucking things give them, and then ask yourself if you happy with ANYONE having that power FOR NO REASON AT ALL.

still not gonna happen; people are too obsessed with their cozy lives to lift a finger. you could literally reanimate hitler, put him in charge of the usa, and nothing would happen. you guys may have a piece of paper (or parchment, or whatever it's written on) that says it's your right and duty to arm yourselves and rise up against tyrrany, but history proves again and again that people whose lives are comfy enough will not do a fucking thing. the russian revolution kicked off because the overwhelming majority had very uncomfortable lives, but americans? nah, man. give them reality shows on their cable tv, cheap watered-down dog piss labelled as alcohol, and apple pie and they're happy.

not to say it shouldn't happen, or that i don't want it to; just that it won't. same as here, same as canada, same as europe.

Valid point. I was speaking just on a day-to-day basis, but they do have a lot of fucking power with this communications grid. Still, it also allows the CIA and FBI to catch bad shit too, so it's not like it's only a system in which the gov't uses to spy on its citizens.

yeah i would not be calling the cia and fbi the 'good guys'

not saying they're all bad, but there is certainly enough of it there to worry me, particularly the actual conspiracy theorist wet dream shit they did, which has been documented and declassified. not exactly trust inspiring.

Oh trust me, I know they're not all good guys. In fact, they're fucking annoying and take sides on a case very quickly which pisses me the fuck off. However, they do catch a lot of baddies out there with this technology. If you're worried I'm a sheltered model citizen, then don't fret. I'm simply neutral on this situation because there is a lot of information to digest and circumstances to consider.

So let me get this straight.

You're complaining that people MAY be watching you, while you're not doing anything illegal or bad, and that this somehow infringes on your rights while you're in a public place? People can film you without permission if you're in a public place, I don't see why the governement should be denied the same rights as others.

Also, if you're not doing anything wrong then there's nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, it's a handy resource to have to use against people who ARE doing wrongful stuff.

i, too, implicitly trust the government not to abuse its power for its own interests while considering that of its subjects to be null and void except where it's politically convenient (ie not here)

because they've sure never done that before

seriously, the 'IF YOU OBEY THE LAW YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT' argument is pretty much the dumbest fucking thing ever and i cannot actually believe people still parrot it

That's why you setup a government agency to govern other government agencies. :downs:

you know there's a reason why the government requires external investigators to investigate situations in business' right?
Same reason why there should be a independent agency who keeps an eye on the government, so they don't just choose who will best suit their agenda and then tap dance on the table when problems arise and nothing happens about t.
