Post some games you think are at the top of their respective genres. Don't bother with a number ranking (its hard!) but just post cool games and discuss games others have posted. Bonus points if you do a quick +/-/"You'll enjoy if.."

I'll start with an obvious choice:
http://illgaming.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/deus_ex.jpg

+Story/setting/exposition (if a little camp)
+ World exploration and player choice
+ Respect for the player (all options are valid as far as the game's concerned and if you play it right you can skip a decent chunk of the game)
+A game which has influenced so many games since (though arguably none have eclipsed it)
- Graphics are horrible (can put a lot of people off)
- Voice acting is laughable (I think the VA and graphics are both so bad they're good)
- Really steep learning curve on the first level (but sets you up really well for the rest of the game)
- Swimming is useless

You'd enjoy it if you liked Human Revolution, or games where the choices you make directly affect the path you'll take. Also if you liked metroid/vania games, to an extent you could argue that DE is a 3D version of that (before the Prime series)

+ Fun combination of tank shooter/racing game.
+ Large outdoor destroyable environments.
+ Visible damage on tanks.
+ 2010: A Space Odyssey reference.
+ Online play with up to 99 other players.
+ Bots that actually try to kill you.
+ It's like $5. Very cheap for a fun game.
+ Low-impact graphics. Completely adjustable.
+ Easy to mod.

- It's old as hell and the graphics are rediculous.
- The soundtrack is consists of a whole two songs, but you can add your own if you want.
- The multiplayer VA is the most annoying thing you’ll ever hear.
- The controls are a bitch to figure out.

loled. goldeneye certainly has some fun qualities today still, but frankly, i dont think the controls hold up. i feel like the controls are actually a huge downfall to goldeneye. that, and the fact that some of the objectives are so cryptic. i remember having a huge issue with figuring out what to do when i was first playing it. the multiplayer sucks ass though, and once again, its mostly because of the controls. no way around that.
bottom line, its a good game, revolutionary for its time, controls suck ass, perfect dark is 100% better. also, perfect dark has that 4J remake on the xbla thats pretty awesome too.

E: and im pretty sure for first person shooter experience, in terms of all around greatness, metro 2033 deserves some recognition. it is the most impressive fps experience ive ever had. the only shooter that comes close, imo, is bad company 2, but thats for different reasons.

Um, MP is what took Goldeneye from being a great game into the category of legendary games.

Looking back the controls were slightly clunky, but they werent very bad. Overal it was the experience it gave you. I didnt find it that cryptic really, then again I beat every level on 00 agent mode.

This one is a given.

+ Beautiful environments for its day.
+ Amazingly simple controls for an FPS.
+ Great encounters.
+ 3rd person vehicle combat.
+ Seperable gameplay and storyline.
+ Best soundtrack of 2001.

- Multiplayer was young and a bit unbalanced.
- Had to lug over a TV and console to play with more than four controllers.
- Gameplay seemed repetative (shoot, melee, hide, repeat), but there were enough new twists to keep it fresh.

2972
Woah now, let me explain why this CoD is best CoD.

+ Gave us killstreak rewards which could either turn the battle or allow us to finish off our enemies.
+ Wasn't based on a previous War. Finally!
+ Player customization almost seemed to turned it into an arena-based RPG game.
+ Pretty great soundtrack.
+ We got to fly a fucking AC-130.
+ The only other CoD title after this that seemed this good was Black Ops.

- Plagued by badkids right off the bat (albeit, they have all but disappeared by now).
- The story-based, on-the-rails campaign still made it play like a bad action-movie (that's a given, though).
- Multiplayer wasn't the best.
- Same engine meant same limitations, including graphics.

+ The first true "sequel" to Mario 64 (because Sunshine is just okay)
+ Space gameplay blew my mind
+ Graphics were nice and sharp on the Wii with great art direction
+ Gorgeous orchestrated soundtrack
+/- The story is the same old Mario, but in space (which can be taken as good or bad)
-Camera can occasionally, though rarely, be funky

I'm sure there's more -'s I could do, but I can't think of any right now since I haven't played the game in a few months.

because it was one of (if not the) first multiplayer console shooters. it just doesnt hold up very well by today's standards. try that 4j perfect dark on xbox live (since the gameplay is basically the same thing) and watch how irritating that gets. it might be fun for screwing around, but any sort of serious play is out of the question.

i mean, im not saying its a BAD game. it has plenty of redeeming qualities, such as mission structure that changes with difficulty, it revolutionized console shooters, and its overall entertaining if youre playing around. as far as being the best though? its far from that. goldeneye just doesnt have anything on perfect dark. its like a straight upgrade.

i think i would nominate either halo 1 or halo 3 as greatest console shooter of all time.... probably halo 3 for multiplayer. thats strictly console though. idk, thats a really tough call.

E: but fucking counter agent in perfect dark, holy shit. i have yet to see that ever show up in any other game. that shit is boss.

It's hard for me to choose either the first one or the second one (maybe even the third if it matches up). Ever since the one day that I received that gamestop magazine with Dead Space 1 on the front cover, I grew excited. Reading the article about this so called "Dead Space" game intrigued me. It would soon be the first horror game that I would ever play. Not only would it scare me, but it was extremely addicting. This is the only game that was much more exciting each time I replayed the story mode. Probably the best game I've played in terms of single player mode.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/82/Gears_of_War.png/256px-Gears_of_War.png

Gears of war (first one) is the best multiplayer game I've played. It had beautiful graphics to go along with its gameplay. I never regret wasting hundreds of hours blowing up enemies with a shotgun and sniping heads off. It also had great ways to flank an enemy and hide behind corners just to surprise and kill an enemy. I spent 10x more time playing
Gears of War multiplayer than Halo 3.

Disclaimer: I never had a Super Nintendo as a kid. I didn't get to play this game until I was about 17. I actually got my hands on my first Super Metroid cartridge (I now have 3 because the batteries in them die) at the same time as I got Metroid Prime 2. I didn't get around to playing MP2 for a while. Super Metroid is just the pinnacle of sidescrolling adventure games. No other game of its era and few even today can match it for the sheer level of freedom afforded to the player. Combine that with flawless controls and some of the best developed atmosphere ever in a video game and you have a winner.

http://i.imgur.com/8yUXS.jpg

Sonic 3 & Knuckles doesn't have official box art since it never came in a box. The only way to play the game was to combine your existing Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles cartridges together via the controversial lock on scheme. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding this bizarre setup, the end result is one of the most perfect and most compelling action platformers ever. I've tried, and I seriously can't find any flaws with this game. Me, of all people. That should say everything.

http://i.imgur.com/6JOX0.png

Yeah, I'm beating this dead horse again. I've probably racked up more hours on this single game over the years than any 3 other games I have put together. Jedi Outcast isn't perfect by any definition, but the massive amount of single player content is backed by a genuinely compelling story and unique gameplay. The multiplayer is in my mind the best deathmatch game ever, offering an infinitely dynamic combat system that comes closer to feeling like true martial arts than anything else I've played.

There's more I could post but :effort: at the moment. Also backing the guys who said Metroid Prime and Call of Duty 4. It's sad that the likes of MW2 were so terrible they make a genuine modern classic look worse by relation.

Gears' graphics, while technologically impressive were the textbook definition of brown and bloom (and strawberry jam on the camera).

@Pooky:
Smetroid, while a stellar game is obviously not without its flaws. The sound-effect quality is objectively shitty for example and the physics (specifically jumping) feels really floaty compared to more modern 2D metroids. I just played through Zero Mission for the first time a few weeks back and I have to say, I think its better than Smetroid (I can certainly see some people hating the fuck out of the post-motherB sections though)

And yeah newer installments can make older ones appear bad retroactively for what became of the series/industry, but the same could be said of many games. For example, I see modern railroading/set-piece gameplay in COD as entirely derivative of the type of gameplay pioneered by the Half-Life series.

its funny, when i tell people how good classic games are, like castlevania and secret of mana, theyre all like "bro youre using nostalgia goggles". i never had the majority of games i talk about when i was a kid. ive played all of these in the past 3 - 4 years. that speaks volumes about the quality of those games.

It's a SNES game, the sound effect fidelity is no worse than any other SNES game. And anyway it's the music and all the small touches that make it work.

As for Zero Mission, it's an excellent game and well deserving of a place next to Super. I don't think it tops it though. Zero Mission doesn't have quite the same scale that Super Metroid did and draws heavily on it for inspiration at that.

No, the sound quality is bad compared to many other SNES games. The soundtrack is great ambiance but even that feels off for me. Compare these:

0_qG55Iye7s
(the jump sounds, the gun sounds, the missile sounds, etc)

To this:
1FnPe6tinVs
(any sound you like)

I can't really comment on the scales of Zero and Smetroid (its been too long since i really invested time in Smetroid) but you can't really blame a remake for drawing heavily on its predecessors :p

Pooky
September 5th, 2012, 07:51 PM
Super Mario is a bad comparison. Super Mario uses heavily stylized sounds while Metroid makes an attempt at something realistic, which is hard to pull off on the SNES.

And no, I don't blame a remake for drawing on its predecessors but I also wouldn't call it superior to its source material.

I would argue that Mario did the better job then, by accepting the limitations of the technology and working within them to produce quality audio, rather than Smetroids attempt to push a square peg through a round hole. The whole game looks stylized, why would they want to make the audio any different?
yCe_uaStdy8
There's not much difference between the SNES's audio capacity and what the GBA had (afaict from looking at wikipedia specs) but Zmission sounds so much better.

I dunno, SM is pretty realistic looking by SNES standards. It's the same thing as comparing Metroid Prime to Super Mario Sunshine. At any rate, I think we can agree that such a minor nitpick doesn't really detract from the experience on a whole.

That Metroid Prime 1 had a very realistic style to its graphics while Mario Sunshine looked like a Mario game.

Only a few games of the Multiplayer.

Now for the best SP halo game since H2 (I wouldn't be upset if people argued it was the best in the whole series):

http://www.hi-techitaly.com/images/stories/news/gaming/Halo_3_ODST_cover.jpg
+ VISR
+ Soundtrack (a given for any halo game)
+ Dat orbital drop onto Regret's carrier (and you can see IAC fly into the slipspace hole :halogasm:)
+ Brutes are a better enemy than in H3 (now have shields)
+ You feel less godlike than a Spartan, which makes it more immersive IMO
+ Free-roaming in a halo-verse game is unique to this game and done really well. The map is interesting and varied and looks damn good for the H3 engine.
+ Introduced the engineer for the first time in the FPS line
+ Introduced Fire-fight to the Halo series (did GoW invent this gametype? I think it did but idk)
- Brutes are in the game at all (and now they're literally meaty elites with worse design and a stupidass beserk mode)
- The shoehorning of the stupidass romance between Nathan Fillion and whats-her-name
- plotholes/dumb stuff (the rookie picking up a helmet and knowing what happened 12 hours ago)
- "waah its not the MC, waah i'm not a spartan, waah hunters are actually formidable, waah, waah, waaaaah"

You'll like ODST if you enjoy the halo verse, enjoy less run-gun style games than the mainline Halo games (it gets more that way towards the end but at least you feel like your squad is good for something, as opposed to in Reach), atmospheric gameplay and shooting aliens. I also think its the hardest Halo game on legendary after H2.

Halo 3's SP is the worst of any halo game (the MP is good though) hth~~

Pooky
September 6th, 2012, 12:04 AM
Just gonna throw out there that Brutes have the same exact health system in H3 and ODST. The only difference is that in ODST they added a visual indicator. The hub could have been better. I was expecting something larger with room to drive a Warthog around in. Other than that my opinion of the Halo series pretty much goes as follows

Halo 1 ---> Halo 2 ----> ODST ---> Halo 3 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> Reach

Yes, I still like Halo 2. Despite acknowledging how massively flawed it was. Deal w/ it.

http://i.imgur.com/sYh7l.jpg

Even though a few people have already mentioned it I just have to mention Call of Duty 4. This game to me is a true modern classic and far and away the best of its series. It's a shame that it's been overshadowed by so many other, worse CoD games to come out since. After I eked every last bit of replayability out of the SP (glitched Intel achievement will haunt me forever) I poured endless hours into the MP. I had every map and every weapon memorized down to the minutest details. I think it's fair to say that my team of friends and I were one of the best Search and Destroy squads on Xbox Live matchmaking by the end. This game is also one of the most immersive out there, rivaled by the likes of Metroid Prime and Halo. I can't reccomend it enough to anyone who wants to see what Call of Duty is like at its absolute best.

n00b1n8R
September 6th, 2012, 01:04 AM
Halo 2 > Halo 1/ODST >> Reach >>>>>>> Halo 3 hth

(talking about SP ofcourse)

At the time of playing each game that list would have looked quite different but in hindsight, I think it's pretty accurate.

My benchmark for JRPGs, Final Fantasy can go wither in a corner. The world is masterfully crafted, the story is great, the puzzles and dungeons are engaging, and the combat is fun in spite of its heritage. This is pretty much the only JRPG I've ever played and actually enjoyed though and through. Lost Odyssey (my distant second for JRPGs) would be better it the characters weren't fucking ridiculous and if it weren't turn-based (and if mana recharged slowly over time spent walking). I link to the image for the second game in the series because it was the better of the original two, but not by much. Don't trouble yourself with Golden Sun 3, it is trash.

http://pics.mobygames.com/images/covers/large/964820923-00.jpg

Fuck your TIE Fighter, your X-Wing, and all those other phonies. Wing Commander started this genre. Wing Commander is this genre. When Wing Commander ceased being iterated, the entire genre died. Also starring Luke Skywalker and Gimli; your arguments are invalid.

http://negativesum.net/games/battlezone/gallery/battlezone_box.jpg/image

I save the best for last. The first and, in my opinion, best RTS/FPS hybrid ever made. The story, while originally intended to be satirical, really blossoms when you take it seriously and start linking it to other conspiracy theories that are not even mentioned in the game. The game is challenging for new players, but once you learn how to circumvent certain scenarios the actual strategy part gets painfully easy. The shooter mechanics take larger amounts of skill to pull off, and the solid but flawed strategy play lays a foundation for greatness that, sadly, has not been expanded upon.

There's not much difference between the SNES's audio capacity and what the GBA hadI guess you never owned a GBA, the sound quality was atrocious because it's bitrate and samplerate were low (which sucks since the GBA has a game which I consider to have one of the best and most diverse soundtracks ever)

I owned (and still have) and SP actually. I was refering to processing power for the audio (which is the only thing which matters when you're comparing both with emulators), not the actual speaker (which I never had a problem with???)

A man of fine taste, I see. I still remember the agony of typing in the save transfer codes between the first two games. It's amazing just how bad the third game was, too.

Also Halo 3's campaign was great n00b1n8R hth

^because you cant just settle on the bronze code. you earned that inventory full of shit, and god damnit, its going to carry over. 6 pages of characters for the gold code it is.

It was OK but definitely the worst in the series.

Cortana, the level inside the UNSC base in Africa, Assault on the Control room (great for a halogasm but fighting up their was underwhelming for such an important part of the story), the highway, any flood level in general, the on-foot sections of 3 towers (or whatever it was called), the story (especially that fucking scene where keys dies, holey fuck i lost interest there), any time they jammed cortana over your screen, the final cutscenes, the fact they kill johnson, the flood siding with you for a corridor, then going back to "WE ARE VILLIANS *twirls mustache*" etc

I will concede that it has my favorite cutscene in the whole series though.

The only levels I liked about Halo 3 were The Storm and The Ark for the same reason: Mongoose. The Covenant is too long for the Mongoose carnage to redeem it.

Basically, the Mongoose was Halo 3.

Damn fucking straight. If only there was a keyboard attachment for the GBA. D:

I liked the original better, played both through and Golden sun, how I'd forgotten you. I really want to sit down someday when I'm bored and play it again, that was some genuine fun I had.

Also, Kingdom of Hearts GBA (i forget the actual name but it was the only one on the GBA) had solid story and gameplay. Didn't care for any of the others.

Chain of Memories! It was one of those games where playing it the first time felt strange or frustrating, then subsequent playthroughs were awesome.

The sheer ridiculousness of Kingdom Hearts prevents me from playing it and enjoying it.

That's what he's talking about. MZM sounds way better on an emulator with increased sample rate and rewritten sound code than it does on the actual GBA.

and Smetroid still sounds like garbage (and I can't tell a difference in sound quality between Pokemon Saphire on GBA and on the emulator)

Westwood broke up and reformed as Petroglyph immediately after Renegade(Notice how westwoods' name is nowhere on the Generals box), so the ORIGINAL developers of C&C were never "sucked dry". Maybe one guy hung around at EA, most of them left very quickly.

The BRANDNAMEof C&C has been literally sucked dry by EA.

Also, Red Alert 2 is one of those games that just doesn't age. 12 years after it came out and it still looks brand new.

Love everything about this game.

Also Hot Pursuit 2 was what first got me into NFS games

the beauty of metro 2033 really starts to shine when you play ranger hard mode. its hard as fuck, but you really start appreciating the small details, because those small details are what you use to survive

for example, you can shoot a guy in the helmet, mask, or goggles. only the goggles ensure a silent, 1 shot kill.

My favourite game of all time. I demand it be brought into the 21st century...CryEngine would be ideal, seeing what Living Legends did.

Also yes, Metro 2033 is pretty goddamn amazing. Best linear campaign experience I've had since Half-Life 2.
