During the development of StarCraft, a two and a half year slog with over a year of crunch time prior to launch, the game was as buggy as a termite nest. While its predecessors (Warcraft I and II) were far more reliable games than their industry peers, StarCraft crashed frequently enough that play-testing was difficult right up until release, and the game continued to require ongoing patching efforts post-launch. Why? There were sooooo many reasons.

it's amazing they got it out at all. and a testimate to the fact that in all the years i played the original, i never experienced any problems with the game. ever.

The only technical problems I had playing Brood War weren't even because of the game itself; I had to use a 3rd Party Windowed App to play it and that froze every couple of hours. But I mean, look at some of the greatest gaming companies: Bungie had that "Million Dollar" Mistake with Myth 2 they had to remedy, which they did, and they ended up an incredibly successful Developer that led to all of us being here today to discuss this. Bethesda has been known to have almost endlessly glitchy games and Morrowind is an example of one that was game-breakingly glitchy, yet the game was still incredibly popular. Blizzard's StarCraft glitches and bugs are really just because the game is constantly shifting. I know for a fact that Patch 1.5.0 brought various remedies as well as various illnesses to the custom games seen and especially brought more opportunities for laginess. Regardless, the game is still very fun and it's currently the one that has me addicted the most. At least, until Dawnguard is on sale and Halo 4 comes out....lol....

The coolest thing for me in that article was that SC had VOIP in 1997 :v:

I remember on fastest possible I just made photon cannons and ran into an error saying I couldn't build anymore. I only had half the map covered. Guess I know why now.

there was a limit to however many things you could have on a map at the same time, hence why fastest map possible was the barest it could possibly be in doodads and terrain so you could have more units

Yeah, Chaos Launcher does that after about an hour and a half. It's irritating that you can't change the resolution without having the base resolution of 640 x 480. That's one of the biggest issues mine has anyways.

It's a really neat tool that lets you play it in windowed mode (which is really nice), but it doesn't prevent the game from freezing your computer unfortunately. It might be that my computer is too good (new) for it though since I can't play AoE neither.
However, finding a working download when I was searching for it last year was really a chore. That link on Liquipedia BW has downloads for all three versions AND the sourcecode. Cool stuff!
