so say i want to teach math in addition to what im currently majoring in in school. i could take a math course online here, for free, and be qualified to teach math? i guess what im asking is do these certificates hold the same weight as a degree from more traditional schooling?

Seems to be a good start. If it's going to get anywhere though, it'll need to have a huge amount of self study content that is on part with regular courses.

I like this but I'd like to see a work-at-your-own-pace component for one particular reason: when I'm doing research outside of my specific area.

For example, I'm writing an undergrad research proposal focused on biomonitoring using genetic samples. While my coursework is heavy on the environmental science side I've only had a few classes pertaining to genetics and none that have covered the type of sampling I need to do. What they're offering would go a long way in pulling together what I've learned from traditional sources (textbooks, journals, etc...) but not in the time frame that I want.

However, certifications are always cool; especially from decent schools.
