Damage caused by a fire at Breezy Point is shown in the New York City borough of Queens, on October 30, 2012. The fire destroyed between 80 and 100 houses Monday night in the flooded neighborhood. More than 190 firefighters have contained the six-alarm blaze fire, but they are still fighting some pockets of fire.

Been without power for a few days, trees all down on the entrance to my nieghborhood, hopefully will have power tonight or tommorow. Pretty cold out too, luckily I split lots of firewood this summer so I'm all good. My piers underwater, same with my community dock, bu fortunately my house is up on a big hill. Only real big damage is my neighbors garage was completely smashed. Hope everyone else is doing good, I heard wall street was underwater though.

sounds about right.
I live on the south river, a river off the Chesapeake. where i live we didn't get a whole lot of flooding, but other parts really did. i was just sitting up stairs in my house looking out and watching my big glass windows just like vibrate and the trees sway back and forth, and could also clearly see the wind pushing the water back up the river and i assume up the bay from the south. There was also a big house under construction across the river from me, and it was all messed up. all in all, this wasnt as bad as the deracho storm (or however you spell it) that we had during the summer, where I was out for literally a week. Got my power back about an hour ago, and all is well. can finally shave, take a shower, and brush my teeth! got school tomorrow though :|

It's a big deal because the Northeast is very susceptible to flooding and wasn't designed to deal with massive storms like this, unlike most of the housing in the Southeast like Florida and coastal regions. Sandy was also a freak of nature. Imagine if it was a Category 4 Hurricane. Goodbye New York.

I have a question about homes in the US, how is it in areas with very little storms there are houses made of brick and yet in areas which have storms, majority of the houses seem to be made of balsa wood?
Zeph
November 2nd, 2012, 07:40 AM
If you see brick on the outside of a home, it's only one layer deep. And brick doesn't do much against fire or flooding since the stuff on the inside gets ruined either way. And if a tree were to fall on your house, a layer of brick isn't going to do much to prevent damage. If anything, brick is just something extra that would cost more money in the long run. Since homes are less likely to get destroyed/damaged in areas with fewer storms, that's mostly why.
Brick being good against wind damage is nice, but that's rarely what really hurts a home.
Rosco

inb4 wild end of the world conspiracies
I always figured the brick thing was a choice of it's cheaper to rebuild with wood than brick especially when the places are more likely to be hit by storms.

who makes a house with just a single row of bricks?
that's so weird, i've never understood this about america, all your homes are made out of wood, and SOMETIMES some bricks, and then wonder why your shit gets fucked up.
i've seen big fucking trees get uprooted in holland, landing on houses, and the houses are usually 'like i give a fuck'
also, we generally don't use those ceramic roof-tiles, because that shit just blows away. generally it's sheets of fiber-stuff or whatever that gets bolted down to whatever's underneath.
holland gets it's share of storms, and rain, (not quite tornado's, but somewhere i think that wouldn't be much of an issue either)
we KNOW out shit floods easily, so we have giant mechanic doors that can literally close the harbor so the water cant flood.
i get the feeling the 'american way' of dealing with this isn't putting together a system that can protect you from things, because THE GOVERNMENT AND KAPITALISM AND COMMUINISM BAD AND JESUS!
we build massive dams long fucking time ago when we wanted to NOT have half the goddamn country flood every other fucking storm, so we spared no expenses and now we've not had any floods ever since (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2a/Oosterscheldekering-pohled.jpg/800px-Oosterscheldekering-pohled.jpg) that shit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maeslantkering) was built. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Works)
in fact, we were on a roll so hard, we figured we'd also make the world's largest artificial island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flevoland) while we were at it.
but we're obviously crazy drug additcs and potheads in a godless lawless prostutution-on-every-corner crazie europeeans bound straight for hell, so who gives a fuck about that.

Unlike plasterboard houses, brick does give some good protection but not as much as certain ICF walls do.
Majority of the damage from hurricanes is once the building is breached the building becomes a wind tunnel and that's what rips the building apart.

Bricks are often used as cladding. Timber framed houses are much cheaper and much faster to erect, and houses made out of brick behave very poorly in earthquake zones as well (although I don't think this area is). It also looks like the building techniques, not the materials are to blame for many of the failures, such as:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_costliest_Atlantic_hurricanes
This wiki article is following the ranking of costliest Atlantic hurricanes. The damage estimates are preliminary and still rising, but apparently Sandy ranks right behind Katrina for the Atlantic. In comparison, Irene is 7th on this list. Sandy also seems to have the highest number of lives lost since 1938, at 55 confirmed deaths.
Reporting in from a middle-of-nowhere small town in Long Island... We just got power back. I am surprised LIPA cared enough to prioritize us before some of the other major towns around here. I think it's safe to say everyone here and in the city seriously underestimated Sandy. I remember reading Facebook posts just a few days ago about comparisons to Irene and people laughing the new one off. Now all I see are a bunch of calls for relief efforts and volunteers.
Needless to say, I don't think anyone in New York anticipated the damage... People here were largely apathetic and were just lamenting the power loss. I for one did not see the gasoline issue forthcoming. I don't remember the last time I've seen lines like this for refueling. Witnessed some pretty wicked road rage against those trying to cut lines for gas. You'll probably see local police or NYPD policing the gas lines to stop the cutters. If you live in Staten Island, Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, along the Jersey Shore, the south shore of Long Island (I live on the North Shore; not as bad here), etc... Best wishes and a speedy recovery. My condolences for property or personal loss. I hope you also have luck finding gas, because I haven't.

we KNOW out shit floods easily, so we have giant mechanic doors that can literally close the harbor so the water cant flood.
i get the feeling the 'american way' of dealing with this isn't putting together a system that can protect you from things, because THE GOVERNMENT AND KAPITALISM AND COMMUINISM BAD AND JESUS!
we build massive dams long fucking time ago when we wanted to NOT have half the goddamn country flood every other fucking storm, so we spared no expenses and now we've not had any floods ever since (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2a/Oosterscheldekering-pohled.jpg/800px-Oosterscheldekering-pohled.jpg) that shit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maeslantkering) was built. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Works)
in fact, we were on a roll so hard, we figured we'd also make the world's largest artificial island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flevoland) while we were at it.
but we're obviously crazy drug additcs and potheads in a godless lawless prostutution-on-every-corner crazie europeeans bound straight for hell, so who gives a fuck about that.
yet you still came running to us like bitches when your shit flooded with katrina.
My house is solid brick, no timber frame here. It's why we got the house. Also protected from flooding because it's on top of a giant 3-acre hill looking down on all of the pedestrian vinyl-sided, timber-framed masses. All it needs to be awesome is an aluminum roof.

Also, here's a pro-tip for constructing cities, USA: DO NOT PUT DWELLINGS ON BARRIER ISLANDS. THEY ARE CALLED BARRIER ISLANDS FOR A GODDAMN REASON.
Fucking contracts going out to the lowest bidder...thank you lobbyists.
