View Full Version : THQ forced to dissolve, forced to auction off franchises.

This is some of hardest news to read in a long time. THQ's bankruptcy dealings took a turn for the worse when THQ's own creditors intervened and told the bankruptcy judge that THQ wasn't doing enough to maximize the sale of the company:

THQ’s hopeful quick sale to the equity firm Clearlake was in trouble, following objections raised by a US Trustee and the publisher’s own creditors. Today, a US judge has upheld those objections, saying the proposed sale process hasn’t given potential buyers enough time to make a bid.

The Clearlake sale was scheduled to complete this week, but US bankruptcy judge Mary F. Walrath has found in favour of the creditors, noting that the aggressive timetable had pushed out other interested parties. “I have problems concluding that the pre-petition sale process was fulsome,” she said, finding problem with the way THQ “did not even put out to the public that it was for sale” until after Clearlake had signed a non-disclosure agreement over the deal.

Walrath cited 10 possible buyers that had contacted THQ following its bankruptcy, saying this was evidence that the publisher wasn’t doing everything it could to maximise the sale price. She also queried THQ’s desire to be sold wholesale, saying “individual titles may have substantial value,” and adding that the requirement to purchase the company in its entirety “may depress bids.”

So basically, the judge and creditors give fuck all about keeping together what made THQ, THQ. The company hoped to be sold as one large mass to another company quickly so that publishing and development of games wouldn't be interrupted. Obviously, the judge doesn't appear to care what THQ is going to do after they make the sale, but only wants to force it to hack itself to bits to maximize the sale. And where do they go from there, good judge?

Here's who got what:

Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000 developer Relic Entertainment is going to Sega.
Saints Row developer Volition, Inc. and the Metro series are going to Koch Media (Deep Silver).
The Homefront franchise is going to Crytek.
THQ Montreal and the South Park license are going to Ubisoft.
Evolve, a game in development by Turtle Rock Studios (which worked on Left 4 Dead), is going to Take-Two Interactive.
THQ will “make every effort to find appropriate buyers” for its remaining assets, such as Darksiders developer Vigil Games.

I guess it's not so bad that SEGA got the most important division of THQ, Relic Entertainment, but I'm also alright with Metro devs going to Koch Media. Crytek was already developing the new Homefront, so no surprises there. Ubisoft is definitely going to fuck up South Park, so get over it now.

24 years gone by the swipe of a pen.

saints row and metro were the two i was really bummed out about, aside from the company as a whole of course. glad to see they both went to the same place at least.

its kind of depressing to see one of the few publishers that didnt try to fuck the consumer just go bankrupt like that. that doesnt bode well for the games industry :smith:

Oh wtf, 2nd half of my post didn't show up. Check OP again. SEGA wields all Warhammer 40k power now...

EDIT: Found the issue in the OP. Fuck this forum's text editor. Fuck it. It doesn't work even when I switch to manual formatting.

Well if THQ didn't make horrible investments... It's a shame but it's a good thing these companies just got shifted rather than shutdown, would have been horrible to lose metro :(

The down side to Metro/Volition being published/purchased by Koch is who the publishing company (http://www.gamespot.com/news/deep-silver-apologizes-for-dead-island-riptide-bikini-statue-6402452) for Koch is....

Assuming the publishers don't fuck with the already-in-progress games, I'm fine with it...until they seek to jam their infinite wisdom into the next titles.

Homefront is going to Crytek? GOOD, maybe they can turn it into something half-way decent. I'm not surprised the judge is more concerned about maximizing sales profit of the company than keeping it together. Those debts need to get paid, yo.

Crytek salvages Vigil's "core team" and forms new studio for them in Austin, Texas. (http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/01/29/crytek-form-new-studio-fill-it-with-ex-vigil-staff/)

Sucks but this is what happens when you make retarded business decisions (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/02/boom-to-bust-thqs-revolutionary-udraw-now-filling-warehouse-shelves/) :(

Waiting to see who gets the Homeworld series (being sold in a separate auction to the rest of Relic).

Update: Gearbox bought it for 1.35m

I never played the original Homeworld games, but working on an RTS sounds fun. Maybe I'll pester Gearbox about it...

I wonder what they would build the game in...the engine for the original games is over 10 years old and everyone at Gears-in-a-box are all coo-coo for Unreal

I would suggest they license the Halo Wars engine (:-3) for starters but having never played the original games I don't know what things wouldn't be available/doable out of the box.

edit: after watching a bit of footage of HW2 (heh), I don't think it would be too far of a stretch to see HW3 done in a modified Halo Wars engine (though they would be limited to MS platforms). Most of what would need to be done involves bringing some more PC-centric things online, not so much changes to the engine itself.

Another interesting thing is that you can get access to HW1's source code here (along with Linux/Mac ports): http://www.homeworldsdl.org/

edit2: Actually, just go here: https://github.com/aheadley/homeworld. Also, oh god look at that C code :gonk:

For some reason I thought someone had spawned a dedicated Homeworld thread. But apparently not.

So GBX Community Day (http://www.gearboxsoftware.com/communityday) was/is today. I attended for most of the morning and afternoon. If no one watched the panels on Twitch earlier (though I'm sure the following has been said before today), they're working with Blackbird on their Shipwreckers game, and vise versa for the HD remakes.

I only heard HaloPC (not CE) referenced once, and it was during the Legacy panel. And it was about the showbros feature (and how the player ping wasn't on the scoreboard at first) :p

The what?

show_homies, but they referred to it as 'show bros' on the panel. They made reference that they used 'showhoes' (for enemies) in BL, so maybe that's where the slip came from.
