Didn't America pledge to defend Ukraine if they disposed of their nuclear warheads? Do they still have them?

No, they don't but under Obama's amazing leadership i bet the only thing he'll do is say "staaaahhhhp!"

I think it's fair for them to own the Crimea since they took the time a long time ago to transplant their people there. They are Russians and deserve to be part of their country if that' what they want to be.
But I don't support Putin saying that the EU was wrong to support Ukraine joining their trade organization or a Russian invasion of Ukraine in any way. Let them partition like civilized human beings. You don't need to shove T-72s down their throats before their new government can even learn to walk.

Putin would annex the world if you let him, but for sure he's not going to under any circumstances give up the black sea

Anyone hear anything about actual violence yet?

Not yet but apparently the new PM of Ukraine is essentially taking Russia's moves as a Decleration of War, so uhh, they got that going for them.

And then you have the leader of Crimea, an autonomous republic, asking Russia for help (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26397323) (not to mention Crimea is quite pro-Russia and is mostly composed of ethnic Russians). Ukraine is claiming that government (Crimea) is unconstitutional but... is it? It *is* an autonomous republic.

Semi-Autonomous IIRC

Crimea is not independent; this would be the equivalent of Texas appealing to Mexico for armed assistance because it's got gang wars making hell.

Wasn't Texas looking to split from the US?

Yeah, if you consider Texas as something capable of putting up a Change.org petition instead of the actual government buildings that decide fate for residents.

I don't think there's anyone here who thinks that the people of the Crimea don't have the right to decide what nation to be a part of. I just think it's wrong for the Russians to send in thousands of soldiers to ensure that happens. If Britain had sent in thousands of troops to the Confederate south during the American Civil War to "protect their interests their", that would have been the closest thing to what we're talking about here.

Or if France sent in troops to Quebec.

A much better example is Georgia v. Russia and South Ossetia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Ossetia#2008_war).

Yeah, I agree on that one except for the Georgians actually firing shots and waging war on the Ossetians.
