This movie's been out for about 2 weeks now, but it was just sooo good I had to.
Every few years, Marvel Studios comes out with something really, really good... Maybe even amazing. For a while it's been like this: Marvel was consistently good, DC not so much but blew it out of the park with something like The Dark Knight. Basically, Marvel dominates the live-action front, while DC absolutely kills them in animated films (Batman: Under the Red Hood, the whole slew of Justice League and Superman films, etc). I'll establish the fact here that I'm a DC fanboy because of my homeboys Bats and Wally West. More on this later.
My list of Marvel's top 4 are: Blade II, Spider-Man 2, Iron Man 1, and The Avengers. Captain America: The First Avenger was also a very solid film, so I'll throw it in there, too. But this new one. It blew it away. The thing is, this movie came out of nowhere really. CA: FA was only modestly good (actually IMO I really, really liked it, but the ratings don't seem to agree). It was a solid Cap film and Hayley Atwell was gorgeous and Chris Evans was a stud but it didn't really do anything beyond that. But The Winter Soldier just... Wow. I walked out with the same feeling I had when I watched The Dark Knight. Maybe even more elated. You guys have to watch this movie. I'm just going to leave it at that. So many things can go wrong with a Captain America movie (the dude's name is Captain America...). These directors (who also came out of nowhere; nobody even knows who they are except for the work they've done on Community) did everything right. I view Steve Rogers differently now from the comics I read solely because of what this movie did right (I used to think he was lame).
Not to insinuate that DC and Marvel should be competing by any means, or going at each other's throats. I mean, yes, they are by convention opposite contenders, but I'm one of those guys who's a fan of both (partial to DC though because I grew up with B:TAS). I just feel like Batman vs. Superman is a complete clusterfuck right now and Zack Snyder isn't the right guy to do it. And perhaps DC's only selling point is still only Batman (see: the entire library of animated Batman films that came out in the past 3 years and the Arkham video games). I might be transitioning to a dedicated Marvel guy because they seriously know what they're doing, and this latest film just proves that they have their head on straight. They NEED to use the Captain America: TWS and Iron Man 1 films as templates for what success should be. And hopefully, they treat Cap in Avengers 2 the same way they did in TWS.
My point still stands. TL;DR: Go watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Just do it.
