I am currently looking for some assistance for buying a new monitor. My current on seems to be dying on me and I am looking to upgrade in a couple months, so I thought why not get it now.
What I have: KDS X-Flat 17" CRT; connected by VGA->DVI adapter
What I would like: Any flat panel that is sub-$300 that is great for gaming and bigger than 17"
I have a Nvidia 6800GT right now, but when I upgrade in August I'll have a considerable more amount of power. Thanks in advance.

You can score some 20.1'' and 22'' Widescreen monitors for around $199 - $299. I'll look around for some deals.
As far as your choices go, don't go for anything not widescreen or under 20''. :)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014105 - BenQ 20.1'' $209

These are just some suggestions. Although I'm sure you will just be sure for whatever monitor you choose you do a good review search, ensure there are no problems with it (terrible colors, ghosting, input lag, and other things that could bother you.)
You can check out Widescreengamingforum.com for reviews on monitors, information, and anything else about WS monitors.

And of course here is the link to the LCD Buyers guide, it's got all the definitions and information you'll need as well as some suggestions as the best user rated monitors for each use. :)

Oh wow, this is fantastic Atticus! Thank you very much.
I am seriously looking at the Samsung (especially since it's $295 after mail in rebate) and when I compare it to the others, it seems like no competition. Any input? That 2ms response time looks mighty fine, but can you even notice it versus an 8ms?
By the way, what kind of monitor do you have?

I currently have the Westinghouse 22'' (was $199 on sale, couldn't resisit) and a 5 year old 17'' (which I only use because I can't work on one monitor.) My 22'' is fine, it's got it's faults (mainly washed out colors but you get that with a TN panel) and of course a high pixel pitch but it's nothing I can't live with. I don't plan to buy a new monitor (unless I get handed a deal I can't resist) until some new tech comes on the scene.
As far as that Samsung goes, I don't know much about it, haven't been following monitors closely (since I'm not in the market no real reason, I mainly have been focusing on new tech.)
This might be of some use though, http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1153632 :)
And of course the cnet user opinions, http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/samsung-syncmaster-226bw/4852-3174_7-32327967.html?tag=uoavrg
