So I know this has been asked before I apoligize for that but I just installed the map editor... and for us not so rich enough to buy 3d max or maya what can we use that works with vista?

Tell me what programs you use to model your map?

I've never used it myself, but I hear GMax is the freebie version of 3DS, although it has very limited capability. I think it probably will work on Vista, so you may want to look into that.
You can get a student license for 3DS for something around $300-400 I think, but that's still pretty expensive.
