heh, that case was the cheapest I could find that wasn't beige and didn't look like it was from 1998 =P.

But yeah, your "case" seems to be working fine xD.

The real reason is that I was banned from using a computer for about 1.5 years, and the drawer was an inconspicuous place to hide it.

If I remember correctly, didn't your mom find it and you got in even more trouble? I love the fan in that picture, it just completes the image.

$5 (not even shitting you) Gemini Cool CPU waterblock with an Apogee GT mounting bracket. Gemini cool doesn't exist anymore btw.
Laing D4 (second hand, got it for $30 off the OCF classifieds)
Dual 120mm rad, forgot the manufacturer.
Coolant is a mixture of Pentosin (very very poisenous =D), Iodine (very very small amount, forgot how much because I mixed it a year or so ago) and distilled water. I think at some point I'll get a blue highlighter and dip it in there to make it all UV reactive xD.

It's all rather old, I haven't had the time or money to update it, but it still performs great. Damn near ambient temps...at...2.2ghz...

It's an already opened G965 board, which I accidentally grabbed instead of the P965 one. The store didn't want to accept it back since it worked fine -___-.

I've tried upping the FSB by 50, 100 and 150 mhz, neither of which worked. I've also tried upping the voltage and replacing the northbridge heatsink, which didn't help. It's just stubborn =(. Apparently I have one of the better boards though, most won't go past 280 or 290 while mine hits 320 before the SATA chipset conks out and it won't boot.

dr nick the cpu in that picture isn't mine, but it was on a topic of the overclockers forum as a example to prove the sucker above me that he was wrong about pentium processors being "ultra fail".Well, if we are talking about its overclocking ability, then no, the Pentium (Or Netburst as I will refer to it from here on out) is not "ultra fail", it does its job quite well. In fact the whole idea behind Netburst was to overclock it, or well clock it higher because factory clocking wouldn't be considered overclocking. The Netburst was designed back when there was the massive GHz war and when the more GHz the more "power" your processor had (at least to the average consumer, but thats still the case now because they think higher and more numbers means more performance not taking into consideration anything else like Architecture), so Intel had it made. They made a processor that could achieve a high operating frequency at the cost of its heat output, power requirements, and over all performance. Compared to most other processors of the time (AMDs line) the Netburst (pentiums) were "ultra fail" as they were just super clocked, overheating, glued together pieces of mess.

Lol, when my dad decided to salvage the windows 98 desktop from the attic (it had 64 MB of RAM plus a 200 Mhz P2, ati rage card, and a 20 gig HDD that was upgraded to 80 GB last month), he had to blow it with a leaf blower. I'm serious - it was that dirty. Then he refurbished it and is using it as a server in his office, the reason why he bothered to upgrade the HDD. His main computer is a Sony VAIO SZ laptop though.

I would like to take a picture of my desktop setup, but my parents have banned me from touching their 6-MP digital camera after I got into big trouble at school for photographing an annoying guy, getting Reaper to PS his pic, and broadcasting it.

heh, i got the "meh-machine" put back together. guts were free, but i used the old case (in the opening post of this thread) to build better internals. i just threw it in a new 30 dollar raidmax case w/ psu and took the 2nd dvd drive off my primary pc and put it on this one. only thing it's missing (for operation) is a hdd and OS, which i'll yoink out of any old pc i can find. after that i'll be adding a tv tuner card and other things.

basically going to be a party rig, for when my friend comes over and for media.

1.5 amd athlon xp (single core), ATI x1050, dvd-rom, 350w psu.

YAY! I have been waiting so long to post my new computer in this thread. There is very little XPS left in this thing (only the ram, hard drive, dvd drive, and sound card).

I give you:

Gimme a break, it's my first time doing cable management. Hell, compared to the job Dell did on the cables in my XPS, this is fucking top-notch.

OK, so Bud's no ultimate gaming computer, but I think he's a pretty damn good budget gaming computer.
Important specs:

Processor: Q6600 quad-core 2.4 ghz (will be overclocked once my new heatsink arrives)
Videocard: EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS- not ultra high end, but still a wicked sick card
Mobo: EVGA nVidia chipset 680i (incompatible with the heatsink even though the website lists them as compatible, hence the "new" ie "replacement" heatsink)
PSU: Thermaltake 700W ultra mega mondo thing (so I never have to ever ever worry about enough power)
RAM: 2Gb DDR2
HDDs: 1TB worth of 7200 rpm seagates and WDs

All wrapped up in a ridiculously huge Thermaltake full-tower.

Oh, also 3520x1200 pixels worth of LCD monitor glory.

It would be virtually silent but for the fan on the heatsink that came with the cpu. I gotta get that replacement heatsink soon.

Edit: Oshi I forgot my camera was in super hi res mode, and I'm too lazy to scale down those images now. Thumbed, so click at your own risk.

I just ran the 3DMark 06 benchmark tests on my new rig. My old puter scored 3600, which at the time was respectable. The new one scored nearly 11000.
I can't seem to track down what the average scores are these days (all I'm turning up is scores fro 2006, and we all know how laughably slow and crappy computers were a whole year ago) but still it seems 11000 is something to appreciate.

I got tired of having that non-fitting CPU fan duct lying around, so I decided to take a hacksaw to it and make it work. So, I cut about an inch off of both pieces of it, and taped the filter end to the case panel, upon which I offset the other end to go directly over the fan, then made a duct out of, uh, duct tape. Now, nothing will go to the CPU but cool, outer air. It ain't pretty at all, but it works :)

Wow. I'm too much of a perfectionist, but even if I weren't, I don't think I'd be able to leave my computer like that. Seriously, why do you need to do your cooling that way? I don't see any reason it would produce enough heat to justify anything other than a front and back fan.

where all ready hitting 30 degrees celcius it's only the middle of spring and i just happen to have a 500 litre tropical fish tank in my room.
When you combine the heat from the tank, the humidity and the crazy hot of australia there isnt alot i can do. When i get the new comp i'm gunna get water cooling and it should help me :)

Till then the milk carton does what it was ment to do, and the air is forced to travel over the CPU :)

So far my new comp is running great, except I can't get it to overclock past 2.75Ghz without being unable to POST. I think someone said there is a hole in the FSB between 1500 and 1650 in this board, so I need to find out. Because people get this processor up to 3.2 Ghz easily on stock cooling without over voltage.

Its really quiet, my room vent is louder then it. But under full load the temperature in my room goes up 5-10 degrees F. It still kicks ass, card is OCed to 700 mhz core and 1720 mhz memory.

My core temps are
Core temp says
At idle its at..............................39-40 C
Underload from Prime95...............56 C
Dualcore center says
Idle.........................................34 C
And underload its.......................50 C

I don't need to push it too hard, 2.8GHz is enough for my stuff. But the board overclocks really well. I get crap when I get it, so the heatsink is a later thing to get. So once I'm not broke, and get my second harddrive I'll get it.

Anything over 30 FPS is fluid, and a five frame rate difference is...well, nothing to talk about, really.

I'd also prefer a real review. (http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/472/) :/ It's just sad that it's taken them over a year to try and come out to the equivalent of the old 8800GTS only to have the revised 8800GTS be infintely better.

Yeah, sorry WoL, I used to be behind AMD as well, but price vs. performance is ridiculous for them, especially when nVidia is doing it better and faster.

What Aggy said.
price vs performance, you're getting a better deal if you get an 8800 gts. But, I suppose if you really have to be a whore and get the very best graphics card possible you could get an ATI (or AMD whatev) and cry a month later when it isn't the best anymore.

Agamemnon
December 2nd, 2007, 05:20 AM
They actually still aren't. The 8800GT still out-performs all of their new cards. The HD3870 is the closest thing AMD has that can compete with it, and it will sell because of the scarcity with the 8800GT (not that scarce at all; all I had to do was wait a few days before it restocked and then I ordered).

It was originally a best-buy or Costco return, with a cracked screen and bent cd drive. A friend bought a storage unit full of electronics from someone who contracts with department stores for their returns, and I helped him repair and sell some of it. Part of my payment was this laptop and flatscreen monitor. I took out the cracked screen to see the serial number, and I'm yet to fork out $180 for a new screen. Obviously, I was going to point out that all kits are shit compared to custom built cooling setups... However, these are decent setups if you want something pre-built:

For a prebuilt system?

Go with a Swiftech (http://www.swiftech.com) kit (especially the H2O-120 and 220 Compact).

Ok, I have some pictures but do to the fact that my room is a cave in terms of lighting the pictures came out crappy. I'll take some better ones tomorrow if I get a chance, but here are two pictures of my comp in it's current state. I toyed with it earlier and got it up to 2.4 GHz but didn't try beyond that. I know it can go higher though :D.

Everything all at once:
http://xs123.xs.to/xs123/08020/stp80170574.jpg (http://xs.to)
This rig doesn't actually have the 8600 GT in it -- however it does have an 8800 GTS 512MB :D. The 8600 GT is currently in my other comp which I hope to turn into an HTPC eventually.

http://xs123.xs.to/xs123/08020/stp80171524.jpg (http://xs.to)

You'll probably notice the thing covering my ram. My ram was running pretty hot with the restricted airflow in my case (due to my radiator being in the front), so I fixed it with things that were within my grasp at the moment, and my ghetto-Dominator-style ram cooler actually works pretty well all things considering xD. It is made from cardboard, a faceplate for a 5 1/2" to 3 1/2" drive adapter and an old 60 or 80mm thin profile fan from a socket 462 cooler. If I can get some free time soon I hope to design something like this but with actual metal or plastic that clips onto the DIMM slot. EDIT: =< Like this:

According to the manual it's 600W, 200 for the sub and 200 each for the speakers. I guess that's probably crap, although it was a $400 stereo 5 years ago. I sometimes can't count the right speaker as I have to give the main unit a good whack on the side to keep it going :p

As apposed to the typical computer guy's setup, I hate Soda. It's water and green tea.

I synergy the PC and the MacBook together, and unlink it (Mouse and Keyboard towards PC) when gaming of any sort. The MacBook is the dual, the PC is standalone. They're both networked to the same external, and if I boot into Vista for example on my MacBook, it's the same drive location, for backburner or Distributed Rendering. The PC is 64 Bit Vista, and the MacBook Leopard/Vista HP.
Usually I have a black light on as well, when watching a movie or gaming/chilling, which is setup on the wall.

This seriously gets the job done. References on one screen, Photoshop on another screen, 3ds on the PC screen. For gaming, map references on one screen, chat/voice/music on another, gaming on PC screen.

I also have VNC set up on both, internet controlled, which I usually control from my iTouch, PSP, or another computer. Works flawlessly (though a bit slow on the iTouch/PSP, it still works)

All in all it's a bit awkward to use the setup because I am a lefty, but I could never get it right considering the way the table is designed. Right hand mouse is no problem. Every place I've been has it set up to be right handed, and I've grown into it over the years.

oh, and yes, the chair is breaking quickly. My fat ass had an epic battle with that chair. Ass-1 Chair-0

That's my like.. "work" station. My "fun" station is my macbook... which is on my lap.. otherwise I have it sitting ontop of one of my "stands" around the house...

If I were to put MY ghetto setup here, you would be dethroned. Unfortunately I seem to have misplaced the pic. Let me see if I can find it...

Back me up, those of you who saw it remember the swords sticking out from under my mattress :v
