Some things about my moniter:
One, it's actually going for more like $550 these days, but I bought it when it was new.
Two, it's a powered USB hub, providing 6 more USB ports to my computer
Three, it's a multi-card reader
Four, the brightness, contrast, and evenness of color are outstanding for a monitor of that size- when you put it next to the monitor of the same size and resolution that my bro bought for $200, you can really see the difference
Five, it has VGA, DVI-D, Component Video, S-Video, and Whatchacallit yellow co-ax video inputs, and I use all of them except s-video.
Six, it has built-in picture-in-picture and picture-by-picture, which puts all those inputs to even better use, especially when I'm playing on my xbox but want to have my desktop available too. (Yes, my xbox is hooked up to my monitor, and it's a thing of beauty)
And Seven (naturally), this thing is sturdy as fuck. There's not much you can do to protect an LCD screen, but beyond that it's invincible. The stand is very stable and easy to adjust, and the case is rock-solid.
So, yes, you guys payed considerably less for a monitor of similar size and resolution to mine. But you get what you pay for. This monitor costs more because it's better.
How's that for "I'm better than you because I have all this stuff", eh?
I feel sublimely elitist and smug now. :)

Some displays have a noticible delay from scaling or other processing being done internally. Like so, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi2OE6hSh00
Not much of an issue in anything but shooters and consoles.
ExAm

I haven't noticed anything on mine. Maybe I should set my displays to "clone" and test it.
Rob Oplawar
July 20th, 2008, 02:34 AM
Yeah, that's a complete non-issue with mine. There's no visible lag whatsoever, except when switching between display modes, which is to be expected. It is by all practical measures a gorgeous monitor.
Cortexian
July 21st, 2008, 03:09 AM
My friend games on a 27ms (yes, that's not a typo) response time LCD, and he does it well with no complaints.
My 24" has a 5ms response time, and I can "just" notice a difference between mine and his (clone mode).
ExAm
July 21st, 2008, 05:06 AM
pixel response time has nothing to do with input latency. Pixel response time is the measurement of how fast it takes for a pixel to change from one color to another, not how fast the signal takes to be displayed on the monitor. A faster pixel response time will get you less ghosting, but not much else.
Cortexian

It's odd, when I play Halo 3 on my monitor, the input lag is unbearable. But when I play Call of Duty or any other 360 game it's fine.Probably because Halo 3 is somehow directing the Xbox to use a frame buffer of some kind.
Rob Oplawar

I think it has something to do with the fact that Halo runs at an artificially increased resolution.
InnerGoat

The upscaler in the 360 shouldn't add any noticible lag to the games. It's quite responsive when hooked up to a 24" CRT. :goat:

There are two xbox 360's there, and only 7 controllers.
The headphones are Astro Gaming A40 MLG edition headsets, retail for 250 with amp but were made in a limited edition of 500. I think they sell a normal a40 headset though which is still 250. They have excellent customer service as well :P
Monitors are hanns-g HG216D, I got them super cheap (180) and they have HDMI so it was all gravy for me. I don't actually recommend them, if you are going to buy a monitor don't cheap out like I did, it'll be worth it in the end to buy something a lot better. Dell makes the best monitors IMO, and they look damn good too.

If you're getting a monitor, I highly recommend this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009094). I did my research on it before I bought it, it uses the panel type with the lowest input lag, not to mention it has awesome contrast and brightness, especially if you tune it precisely with the nVidia control panel or another utility.
InnerGoat

I'm still using my dead 17". It usually stops working after a few seconds of running, but when it doesn't, it stays on quite nicely. Usually forcing it through a few display changes fixes it (like, say, restarting a computer).

Speaking of monitors...
I learned something after doing some research on my current monitor-
Find out what type of panel it is. Specifically, make sure it isn't Twisted Nematic (TN)- based.
They have crappy viewing angles, and if you view it at any angle but the front the color is off. The only selling point is a 5ms-7ms response time, and the price.
Unfortunately, they are also the most common type. Basically, if all they advertise is the response time, and it's cheap, it's a TN panel.
If you were to buy my monitor (Q241wb) now, it would be a TN panel. Luckily, I got one of the last VA panel ones they made, and it works amazingly nicely.
ExAm
August 4th, 2008, 09:47 PM
Actually, TN panels are best for gaming, as they have the lowest input latency. I don't mind the viewing angle, I don't even notice any color difference at all when gaming with my TN panel. I think it's awesome :/
Here's a review of my monitor (http://mathewanderson.blogspot.com/2008/07/hardware-review-001-acer-al2216wbd-22.html) that explains.

The vertical viewing angles are crappy, horizontal is fairly good. Also, just because it is cheap doesn't mean it has to be TN.
Those 24" Soyo Office Max was selling for $299 were *VA panels for a long time until some TNs appeared. Westinghouse has a 24" MVA with the extra video ports for under 400 as well.

On a monitor of my size (24"), viewing angle becomes a problem, because the edge of the monitor is so far away from my face.

Looks good in any light I think, and has been a head turner out in restraunts and the like. Got it for $300. 8gb solid state hdd, 1 gig ram, came with an 8gig sd card, has a multi-card reader, webcam that performs great with a microphone built in. 3 usb plugs and XP home. 8.9" screen (1024x600 px).
Great for travel, light use. Mostly I got it for typing and research. Considering getting MS Streets and Trips to use for gps out on the road.

LG P300 with c2d T8300, 2 GB RAM, geforce 8600MGS, plus bluetooth, wifi, and HDMI-out. Has no internal dvd drive, but comes with an external one in the box, hence making this a much more practical version of the Macbook Air (a bit thicker though) at a significantly lower price.
I didn't really need my desktop anymore so my dad transferred it to his office. I never really bothered to photograph it but my friend did:
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/2904/img22721af5.th.jpg (http://img297.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img22721af5.jpg)
NOTE: Those aren't my speakers, my friend wanted to sell 'em to me so he brought them over and tested them on my computer. Not surprisingly, I was uninterested as I play with headphones over 90% of the time.
I kinda miss that Logitech G15 keyboard through. I bought it overseas at 1/4 its Canadian price, because my old PS/2 windows 98 keyboard finally gave out after over 6 years of use. Those dedicated gaming macro keys on the side proved useful in a couple of RTS's but mostly redundant in FPS's.

I'm also thinking of cutting a small channel on the backside of the mother board tray to take some pressure off the side panel. It's currently bending do to the huge pile up of cable behind the motherboard tray, even with it all spaced out... This new case is in preparation for a new modular power supply (ABS Tagan) and a new graphics card (Nvidia GTX 285). You may have noticed that I propped off the Cooler Master logo from the front of the case, I just like the "clean" look without any branding showing, so it had to go. I also mentioned the side panel window earlier, if anyone has any recommendations or information regarding side panel window installations, it would be great to hear!

It was actually fairly cheap for a case of it's caliber, I got it from Memory Express (http://www.memoryexpress.com) for $99.99 ($104.99 w/tax). Saving up my money for an Nvidia GTX 285 right now, I may pick it up next paycheck depending on if I can also afford my rent and phone bill with enough money left over...

Actually, it's significantly less noisy than my previous rig. The only fans that are running at 100% are the front intake and the CPU fan. All of the other ones are at 80% making for a very quite rig.

I've got the same brand of heatsink, but it's the slightly smaller (but still huge by cooler standards) version with the 80mm fan instead of the 120mm he's got there.

I'm paying more attention to that big ass CPU heatsink.
Oh, and that GTX285 would never fit in my PC case.
If thats the CPU heatsink, that thing is a fucking skyscraper in some small motherboard village.
Jesus it's big, it's not the size of the boat yet its the motion of the ocean.
You've never seen a CPU heatsink that big before? That one's a baby compared to some I've seen...
Yea, if you want to see a massive CPU heatsink/cooler the Tuniq Tower 120 is massive.

http://www.tuniq.com.tw/Cooler%20Info/Tower-120.htm
Still the best heatsink there is :awesome:
QFT, the TRUE is an amazing heatsink... I over-applied thermal paste like a retard though, so my temps a few degrees higher than they should be. I should have reseated when I had my motherboard out for the case transfer...

This is worth a bump tbh.
Well, I was having some difficulties installing the side panel on my CM 690 yesterday. Mainly because I'm retarded and didn't actually read the instructions that were on the Frozen CPU website, I just went ahead and started cutting assuming that it would be like all the other case window installs that I've done. However, my previous case window mods were "tape mods' so all I did was use a square piece of plexi behind the panel "window hole" and taped it into place using Scotch/3M #4010.
However, this window kit uses U/H channel as an anchoring method. When I cut the whole in the case I used the window as a template by tracing around it, however I didn't use the included washer to add the extra space required for the u/H channel molding! Therefor when I went to install my window I found that the hole was to small to fit both the window and molding into! Noes!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyhow, the nice thing about having holes that are to small, is that you can make them bigger... Which I did by measuring the amount of room required and making a new cut to trim about 10mm off two of the edges (5mm per side x 2 sides = 10mm off left/bottom sides). Luckily enough for me, this fixed my problem! Here are some pictures (no work in progress pics unfortunately)!
Completed panel installed on the case:

Right now my ram isn't budging a bit and it's at the slowest FSB ratio my board supports =/. Loosening the timings doesn't seem to be helping either.
I haven't tweaked with it in a while. Right now the CPU is idling at around 40c where it used to barely idle at 30c, so I think it needs to get some new thermal paste and maybe some more coolant. I haven't done a complete flush of this thing since early 2007, lol.

However, my next rig that I build (wont' be until a new big advance in processing technology and graphics technology) will most likely be water cooled, or totally submerged in something like the Reactor (http://www.hardcorecomputer.com).

As soon as I can get my hands on a decent fan controller, I'm going to drop two of my 120 CFM monsters (http://www.pc-look.com/boutik/Prod_Delta_Electronics_Case-Fan-120-mm-120-CFM-50-dBA-EFB1212HHF__20575_en.html?language=en) onto the radiator .

TPE, why the hell are you using mini-ATX in a full size tower? >__>Mobo was cheap, and case is upgradeable.
Not saying that I would want to keep this case. I wanted to upgrade to a 900, but everybody has that so I might get the cosmos S or whatever if I ever upgrade it.
I painted the inside of my case black so it looks way less noticeable of the micro atx board in an atx case, those pics were really outdated.

CM 690's rock. And there's less of them around than the 900's.

PROTIP: Micro < Mini
That's a fact. Now unless motherboard form factor names are seriously screwed, I'm inclined to think you're incorrect.
E: My god, he's correct. The world's gone crazy.
E2: Apparently they've actually got the same area, just MiniATX is a rectangle and MicroATX is a square :|
It's actually because of a difference between the ITX and ATX standards. ATX is just plain bigger, *-ITX was designed for smaller applications, so even if the prefix normally represents a larger unit, it's still probably smaller.
Also, I keep a Mini-ITX in my desk, so I always have a point of reference.
I've never posted pics of the insides of my beige boxes... I should do that when I get home (my desktop that hides behind a pair of filing filing cabinets actually has blue LEDs in the PSU, and my server's PSU cables glow...)

Props to the high quality pic, Timo. Screwed me up a bit when I saw through that open slot at the back though; at first that carpet looked like more motherboard to me with those wires on it.
How's that X2 6000+ work for you? I'm thinking of getting one.

His shit had the screen die or something. I've got a screenless laptop as well and they're kind of annoying in that setup...

I have a laptop tablet with a working touch screen but the actual laptop doesn't work. Would it be possible to connect JUST the screen to my PC somehow? I was thinking about mounting the tablet screen in the motherboard side case panel and using it as a media controller thingy.

I doubt it, because the monitor I used has a weird type of plug, and it isn't something that you can just plug into a desktop.

You need a converter to use laptop screens on a desktop... and you'll probably need to build it yourself.
e: Google it anyways and find out

Yea, I was hoping that one of you knew something about the converters. I'll Google around a bit.

That would be because I replaced the 3MB JPG with a 220KB JPG of smaller dimensions.

Heh? It links to the 3MB original JPG... Which has no compression artifacts, only "interior picture failure" artifacts.

Sorry for the super crappy picture but my camera seems to have some issue with actually taking light in. My desk is in the middle of being reorganized so it's a bit messy.
