An intake fan under your HDD cage would be a great mod to that case, the cable management is a great improvement and should free up some airflow.

If you want to fix a couple more things, do the following:
http://leimg.lancersedge.com/images/50618792956510401913.jpg

All the cables painted red, you should feed towards the motherboard and under your expansion slot cards (green arrow).
Feed your PCI-E graphics card power cable (painted purple) behind the motherboard tray and then out of it and straight to the card (light blue line).
Untangle your 6/8pin motherboard power cable (orange) and feed it straight across to the connector (blue arrow).

1.) I think I can do that; you mean they'll run over top of the motherboard just behind the end of the PCI slots?

2.) I can't really feed anything behind the motherboard tray. The gap between the tray and the case wall is around 2mm and the tray runs right up to the drive bays; no way to feed it around there. That and the wires in this PSU are really stiff; some of the reason why my wiring is that way is because I don't want to/can't bend them very far.

3.) The 4-pin motherboard cable? Only reason it goes around that far is because it is really long... I might be able to route it around the rest of the wiring so it doesn't run directly underneath the PSU's fan. Good idea.

Also, my only gripe about my "modular" power supply is that the 4-pin and 8-pin motherboard power cables are not modular. I can't imagine there are a lot of motherboards that require both a 4-pin and an 8-pin at the same time so there's always one extra motherboard power cable attached. Currently all my extra cable length is sitting in the second (empty) optical drive bay.

Anyways, here's a picture of the front of the case; you can see the hard drive cage.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/Varmint264/DSC00993.jpg
I'm not a huge fan (no pun intended) of the Aspire logo on the front, but could I have a suggestion or two?

1.) Where exactly should make the hole (to make it look like it was meant to be there) given the design of the case?

2.) What size of fan is best?

3.) What tools should I use that are precise enough for this? My mechanical experience relies more on wrenches and screwdrivers than cutting holes in plastic; my power tools at the moment are a jigsaw (unlikely methinks) and a portable drill driver, 3/8" chuck.

There is no mobo that would take both, a 4 pin is just sitting there from my modular psu as well.

Sorry, I meant route it down and behind your optical drive/HDD cage and then out along the HDD cage bottom.

It looks like you're pressed for space under the HDD cage so you might be forced to go with an 80mm fan. I prefer 120mm fans since they can move more air at a lower sound level, so if you could cut a gap into your HDD cage near the front of the case to allow a 120mm fan to fit, go for that route.

By behind the drive bay/HDD cage you mean on the same side the motherboard's mounted on, or the side facing the camera?

I don't have a problem with cutting the metal cage under the bay; I'm more concerned with what to do about the plastic front of the case, right in front of where I can put the fan; should I cut a fan-sized opening in it or maybe just try for a bunch of smaller holes that I can put a nice mesh in?

There is no mobo that would take both, a 4 pin is just sitting there from my modular psu as well.
Ah, you have the same PSU, don't you? I don't know a lot about PSUs, but Newegg had a deal on this one and so I thought I could save without buying a cheap PSU.

EDIT: I just measured the distance between the bottom of the hard drive cage and the bottom of the case; about 9 1/2cm. How are 92mm fans in general? I measured the case fan at the back of the computer and it's 92mm. Doesn't move a lot of air but I can't hear it either.

The motherboard side, in the picture I can see some cables behind the HDD cage, so route the PCI-E cable back there and then out the bay (towards the camera) and across to the card.

You could always use a small drill bit and just throw in a bunch of holes in a mesh pattern, if you want airflow I'd look at buying some fine wire mesh (http://www.ocmodshop.com/ocmodshop.aspx?a=148) from somewhere and making a larger hole.

Ex: Cut square hole, use mesh to cover said hole so it doesn't just look like a hole... It's really up to you on you you want this to look.

Depends on the quality of the fan, get something nice like a Delta and you shouldn't have a problem.

Ah yes didn't pick up on that before the stickers look a little different, and OZC are supposed to be a good psu brand. Also I've posted this before but it seems easier to throw cables around with a bottom mounted psu. 8/4pin at the top of mobo being an exception.

Obvious reasons for him, not so much to others. Freelancer is big on cable management and now I think it's safe to safe a lot of other members are as well. With a bottom mounted PSU, the cables don't have to go as far to reach some components in the case. A prime example would be the power connectors for graphics cards and hard drives. Any cables needed to go to the top of the motherboard and optical drives can be more easily hidden under the motherboard tray and come out in the top right of the motherboard tray, right where the optical drive is. Overall, it's easier to get better airflow in your chassis if cables aren't blocking the airflow.

The hotter components are more spread out with bottom mounted PSUs as well, but for most people it wouldn't matter that much either way...

Timo
January 28th, 2010, 03:47 AM
My case does because there was literally no ventilation. Once I stuck 3 12cm CM fans on it where I could (2 of them in 8cm fan holes, used thumb screws in the holes that held the side bezel to get them there) and it now runs a helluva lot quieter. Although I ordered a CM Sileo 500 (http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=5843)case today - comes with inbuilt acoustic foam :3.

every PSU ive ever seen has 2 fans, one on the bottom to suck in the hot air, and one to blow it out.... seems like it would be the same. (unless you had multiple fans on top)

Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) Processor LE-1300, ~2.3GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Hard Drive: 320 GB

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_rtm.090713-1255)
I'd say for the price it was a good deal. I really needed a PC and couldn't wait and build one (I also don't know crap about how to). This is my first new desktop i've had, my other one was from 2004 or something, and I was gaming on an old 04 laptop. My laptop had a GeForce Go 6150 in it. I don't think I could ever play a game on it again now I've seen the dedicated GPU world. You planning on getting something dedicated for that thing? Actually, I can't see too well in the picture; is there an AGP or PCIe slot on that motherboard?

I really hate seeing a motherboard that has space set aside for four RAM slots but only two were installed. Mine is like this as well. Is it really that expensive for the manufacturer to put all four slots on? Or... is it more like some of the motherboards they make have defective RAM slots so they don't make them usable?

I'm assuming the longer black slot is your PCI-E so you'd just need to put a card there. How would integrated graphics stop you from getting a dedicated card anyway lol?

Yeah I would think your motherboard has a PCI-E slot in there. It looks like the longer black slot is your PCI-E 2.0 x16 and the other is the standard PCI-E. The computer is a Compaq, but they still use parts that are open to the market, which almost always have a video card expansion slot.

Yes, I can see that. What I'm referring to is that the motherboard appears to be designed for four RAM slots but only two were installed on it... it bothers me is all. My motherboard has that same pattern, with two RAM slots and then two spaces next to them that look like they should be RAM slots as well.

As for the PCIe slot, I just couldn't see it very well.

Decided to stick with the case they sent for my mum's PC. Too much effort trying to email the site to send us a new one before we send the one we're using back. They're sending out a free HDD dock though for free, which is a score for me.

http://timo.modacity.net/pix/perter/mumpc/naming_1.jpg

There's about a 1cm gap above the top DVD drive which is where i've stuffed all the leftover cables. I know the 2nd DVD drive isn't plugged in, Intel was nice enough to send out 2 SATA cables for a mobo that can hold 6. I never understood why it was the motherboard supplier that was expected to supply cables for internal parts. HDDs and DVD drives, even OEM ones should still come with their own SATA cables.

Your motherboard shat out on you because you sat a sub right on top of it... Actually, I really doubt that's the case but putting subs anywhere near other electronics is generally a bad idea from what I've heard.

Timo
April 17th, 2010, 05:17 AM
Yeah ExAm yelled at me earlier, i've moved it. Sub wasn't really going at the time so I doubt it was the problem. It was around 3 and a half years old, and part that shat out was surrounded by dust.

Isn't the best place for a sub on the floor? I've got mine near my feet under my desk with enough space for proper airflow. It's awesome when you feel the thump of the bass on the ground and it still sounds great.

Timo
April 17th, 2010, 04:18 PM
In my defense it's only be there for about 3 days, since I got my new monitor.

Varmint260
April 17th, 2010, 04:50 PM
Floor is always the best place for the sub in my opinion. I've got mine sitting on either end of my desk, flanking it, but since the floor is essentially the house's concrete foundation, I mostly feel the bass through the desk, not the floor. Actually, if I reach up and hold my hand to the ceiling I can feel the bass in the roof better than the floor too lol.

Cortexian
April 17th, 2010, 05:18 PM
I've got that same situation Varmint, my sub is on the floor behind my desk but it's on carpeted concrete so there's almost no floor vibration... Unless I'm blasting music at 3/4 or higher volume.

Kind of an old picture right after I assembled this computer back in Abu Dhabi:

http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/7596/img3204i.th.jpg (http://img22.imageshack.us/i/img3204i.jpg/)

As you can see it looks very generic, but I was on a tight budget. I want the Doom 3 case mod though :maddowns:

current specs are AMD Phenom X4 9500, 4 GB ram, 500 GB 7200rpm hard drive, msi k9n2 motherboard, and XFX geforce 8800GT 512 MB. The monitor is 1440x900 19 inches, hoping to get a 21.5" 1920x1080 this summer though.

I bought an AMD Phenom II X4 940 and a Radeon HD 5770 in Canada and those will be installed once I get home.

Also it now runs Windows 7 Professional instead of the Vista it used to run.

This is the computer I use in university:

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/1078/image019y.th.jpg (http://img412.imageshack.us/i/image019y.jpg/)

13 inch macbook pro...2.26 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB ram, 160 GB 5400rpm hard drive, and integrated Geforce 9400M. Ownage webcam built in. Runs 10.5 leopard and win7 professional x86 in bootcamp.

lol, I realized I have a chinese engineering students association clipboard on my desk...my half-Chinese roommate convinced me to join the club but I never went to any meetings beyond the first orientation day since I'm unsurprisingly very out of place in such a club.

Yeah, my walls are purple, deal with it. Those are bose speakers from 1985, and a VCR so I can get video from my cable box to that old tv which has no a/v inputs. The rest is self explanatory.

Also, I broke my front usb ports, so I had to put an old one that doesn't fit, which I have sitting in my extra dvd drive slot, which is why there are wires sticking out (USB extensions) and duct taped to my wall. A.K.A. Ghetto rigged.

That is pretty sweet, you should hook up the iMac to the monitor directly left of it. Then hook the PC up to both the far left and middle monitors, then you could "share" the middle screen as a second screen for both the PC and Mac!

Like this:

Screen---Screen---Screen
.....|.............|............|
...|‾|..........|‾|.........Mac
360.PC.....PC..Mac

Obviously will only work if you have multiple inputs on both of the black monitors. Then you can setup Synergy on the PC, Mac, and laptop and use one mouse and keyboard for all three!

I just bought another 1.5 TB drive for that for $60, but I don't have the proper power for it yet... have to get a little adapter thing... *sigh* My actual work machine is still unplugged though.... so any computing I do is on my macbook :D

Haven't updated in a little while. I had this little problem with the optical output on my PC being a total pile of crap! The Logitech X-540s I got on sale aren't quite as good as the floor speakers but at least they'll accept 5.1 channels with the PC analog outputs. I've got the Yamaha HDMI receiver and loudspeakers hooked up solely to that Playstation 3 over there that totally has no games whatsoever. The HDMI audio is really nice for gaming and blu-rays. All I need is a WAY bigger television to match the speaker size and I'm set!

In this case, that's the only outside wall that isn't finished in this room and there is a plastic coating in front of it (you can see it in the pic if you look closely). Thanks for your concern guys, I feel so warm and fuzzy now (no, not insulation fuzzy!). An awesome aspect of the slightly-below-ground room here is that it doesn't require a lot of insulation... the concrete floor doesn't shake much with the subwoofers, though :(

I've seen prices on decent new speakers and they're WAY expensive. A better way to get bigger sound is to look through pawn shops and at yard sales. I got my loudspeakers for $60 apiece used locally. Mind you, it's good if they have a way for you to test 'em first; see if they're worth whatever the owner wants for 'em.

It's for the optical drives, I've had these ones since before there were good SATA optical drives.

Also, rounded IDE cables are much harder to work with. It's easier to just split the cable manually and bundle the extra out of the way, which is what I did. It's not split near the motherboard or actual drive connectors because there's no point for those parts of the cable, at least not the way I'm managing it right now.

e: @ Freelancer; where would I cut holes?

Cortexian
January 21st, 2011, 03:44 AM
Cut holes in the mobo tray so you can feed cables behind it and the other side panel. Like this:
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/8595/img3793f.jpg

http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/3182/img3796n.jpg

Yours will be a bit different layout since the PSU is at the top. Cut a bit of a hole where you want to feed all hte PSU wires behind, and then cut a gap along the mobo tray edge so you can get the cables out and around to the mobo/components. Then route all your cables to the drive bays along the top or bottom edge of the case.

ThePlague
January 21st, 2011, 12:42 PM
I can't. The way the case is built I can only open up one side of it. The left side panel is also part of the top and bottom, and it's riveted to the whole thing.

hobojoe
January 21st, 2011, 01:32 PM

ThePlague

Kind of a money issue. I spent the 300 dollars I worked for last weekend (Don't have an actual job). I also kind of like the case. When I do get more money though, i'm going to look into getting a new case.

Cortexian
January 22nd, 2011, 12:39 AM
That's got to be the worst idea ever... Why the fuck didn't they just make the mobo tray the side of the case then or eliminate the space behind it if you can't even get back there. Or make the case thinner or something.

Fail.

ThePlague
January 22nd, 2011, 01:52 PM

Cortexian
January 22nd, 2011, 08:22 PM
Cable manage that shit or I'll gouge out your ovaries with a rusty spoon. And since you're a guy, I'll be at it for awhile trying to find them.

Just place all your components in, then start adding the cables you need starting with the PSU (since it's a big component that needs to go in anyways). Take both side covers off and tuck stuff behind the mobo tray and such like in my photos.
