View Full Version : Halo 2 Vista Jagged edges

Hello all,

the PC I am running Halo 2 Vista on is:
Core 2 dou T7200 @2Ghz
2GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 7900GS w/ 256MB memory
Vista Ultimate

The problem is this: The edges of some objects in the game appear to be extremely jagged. They are usually walls or other objects (ie. not your weapon or hands). This has nothing to do with AA, I have it enabled at 4x. Plus the "jagged-ness" does not seem to coorolate with pixels (so it doesnt just look like AA is disabled, it is completely differnt).
I have tried this on a monitor (since my laptop's native screen resolution is not supported by Halo 2) and the problem is still there. It does get better if I increase the screen resolution to 1600x1200, but I can not do this on my laptop (that res is not avaliable).

Here are some screenshots, look at the edges of the floors and walls:

Here is a 1600x1200 screenshot, the problem is still there but not as noticible. (look at the end of the cylinder farther away from you)

also, in some parts of the game, the textures look really bad...did they leave some textures un-altered from the xbox version, or is this a problem too?

I have all the updated vid card drivers and DirectX 9.0C. I reeally want to get this fixed....thanks!!!

Try the AA on different settings.

Did you use the in-game AA or forced it with the drivers? If in-game, give it a try by forcing it in the nVidia control pannel.
I don't recall if the in-game AA worked right for me. :/

Nope, I set the AA setting in the nVidia control pannel to 4x and it gives the same problem.

It is interesting though, when I play in multiplayer there is no problem with the graphics.

Any other sugestions?

Thanks

People have been noticing something similar, but not so apparent. There are little white lines on the edges of some surfaces. They look related. I personally think it's something wrong with the bloom effect.

It looks like it's on medium or maybe even low, try turning that up too.

It's not getting in the way of playing the game is it? From the looks of the pics it isn't too serious.

If the resoltuion isin't there, you can't use it (we hope this gets patched some day).

Go into the NVIDIA Control Panel (Right click your desktop and then select "NVIDIA Control Panel" from the drop down box). Select "3D Settings", then "Adijust image settings with preview".

Now select "Use my preference emphasizing" and move the slider to the right (Quality) side.

Maybe the fog is causing that?

swraman

can you turn off the fog?

might be that the bloom is Z-fighting with the geometry somehow..

Mabe, damned microsoft and there crappy vista. crappy backwards compatablity
Backwards compatabilty with what exactly? Last I check Halo 2 Vista only runs on windows Vista officially.

Try checking too see if newer/beta drivers fix it? Thats the only thing I can think of.

Its more likely that halo 2 was developed and tested on XP, then within the last months of development, ways were implemented to ensure it would run on vista only.

well if you haven't heard MS is already coming out with a brand new service pack already! that means that vista wasnt even meant to go out on the market until atleast 4-6 months after its release in the end of january. MS was so set back with halo 2 vista that they had to get out vista before H2V came out so they could make easy cash off of people quick (like they have in the past).

Side Note: ready boost with vista doesn't work at all so microsoft is making this SP for working on RB and to work out any bugs possible. MSGS (MS game studios if you didn't know) actually admitted to fucking up H2V and bungie did also with the xbox halo 2 and all of the fellow members at H2Vista.net are hoping they bring Halo 3 to pc because if they fuck up halo 3 for PC then I'm just gonna switch to Apple and Linux.

Vista was meant to come out when it did. Period. The same goes for H2V. They were expecting H2V to help sell Vista...well it didn't work out like they wanted. Also, please link me to wherever MGS admitted to screwing up H2V, because I don't believe that they would.

Yes and no; I believe that the core coding was started on XP, yes, as I think that no version ready for testing was out even internally. Then, theoretically, they moved over to Vista, and worked with that to learn how they could learn get the software to work with the OS's overhead (*snicker*), and Windows LIVE libraries and such (:eyesroll:).

Guys, XP wasn't supposed to come out for a year after it was made, I mean, that's when SP1 was released for it! Service packs ALWAYS mean that an operating system was rushed and released early! :v

Please. Learn why software updates are before you babble incoherently.

What do you mean compete? If there's two versions, then it'll be done at install depending on your DX version and you'll go on to play the game normally.

i am wondering why they are making 2 versions of GoW for pc and not 1 that supports DX9 and 10. if there is diffrent versions and you cant compete with the other that will blow

The techniques used for textures/shaders are now so much different between DX9 and DX10 that they have to convert their formats differently per each platform. Reason? The sizes/formats are not compatible with one another.

And, since DX10 allows a much nicer output than DX9, and a better quality, you will notice the DX10 version is much worth the money spent on it. At least GoW is not leaving out people with DX9.

Halo 2 dident leave people out with DX9 because that is what it was made for:lol: just ms was being greedy and wanted gamers to goto vista
Halo 3 is DX9 and it looks way better then halo 2.

I thought the xbox 360 was Direct X 9.5 or something.

Skyline

Ya it's said it uses its own modified version of directx 9.

The XBox uses DirectX 8.
http://www.xbreporter.com/xbox_system_specifications.php

As far as I know, the 360 doesn't use DirectX at all.

Xbox 360 uses DirectX 9.1

Actual DirectX, or just technologies that are synonymous with DX9.1?
