Creating a glossy feel

Achieving glass: 101

This tutorial will focus on generating a base of knowledge for people without much experience with gradients.

But what is a gradient? Is it something you use to clean your teeth? Nope, it deals with colors. In most cases, it’s a major factor in deciding light sources, and giving depth to an image or color. Professionally, you will see gradients used a lot these days. So to keep up to par with these industry smarts you should at least understand what the word means.

Definitions:
1) Gradient - a rate of change with respect to distance of a variable quantity, as temperature or pressure, in the direction of maximum change.

2) Gradient - A blend from one color to another color.

Now, explanations:
The first definition refers to a change with respect to distance, such as temperature, or pressure. Now in colors, you’ll probably hear much over your lifetime that blues are cool, or red’s are warm. A saturated color has a relaxing feel, while the non-saturated colors just don’t feel as welcoming. Brighter colors seem to be attractive when used on a good color palette, while darker colors should be reserved for details and shading.

The second definition goes hand in hand with the first really, but this time it’s giving you the blunt form of how we’ll be using it. Whether it’s a transparent gradient, or a gradient with two different colors; we’ll be experimenting with different types, and I’ll surely show examples.

Congratulations for reading through so far! From here on out, pictures will be assisting you, along with a semi-detailed explanation to what’s going on, and more examples on achieving different effects. Personally, I haven’t had any real training or have read much material that deals with different types – I’ve just gone through experimenting. Feel free to contact me, correcting any false statements and I will be happy to hear from you. Any important thing mentioned, I will be sure to fix.

Using your color selector correctly:
Be sure to avoid too dark of colors, and very saturated/bland colors. Here’s imagery on what colors you should avoid.

Testing gradients:
Here are a couple ideas of what you want to do with gradients, try to generate different looks with different colors. So you have a feel of what the gradient tool has to offer.

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/9453/gradientsmc2.jpg

Now that you have seen what it does, and have an understanding for it, let’s move onto a more detailed instruction on what we’ll be doing next,

Mastering that Glossy Touch:

Creating a gloss to an image is more than just slapping down a couple of layers, and then placing your transparent gradient over the top, it’s figuring out lighting sources, shading, and plenty of other factors. I personally like to make a mock up of an image, that looks decent, and then I add a shine when the base imagery is to a near finished state.
So, what to do?
Let’s look at the basics.
Start off with a decently sized image, so you can mess around your image you’re creating. I suggest starting with your main image size. Let’s go through it step-by-step with pictures now:

Choosing your image size

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/8169/imagesizeku2.jpg

Let’s go ahead and make it 600x150 for kicks and giggles.

Choosing your background color, for your template

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/6459/paintbucketthatsuckersb8.png

We’ll go with a black. It helps bring out your reflections very nicely.

Expanding your canvas

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/1340/canvaslocneditorgq3.png

Now let’s take that 600x150 workspace and make it the size of an average desktop; 1024x768!

Your Workspace. Your plan.

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/403/workspace1ayi0.jpg

Now that you have your desktop sized portrait up and ready, you have to think to yourself: “Do I want a 3d perspective image? Or will I just keep it simple?” Well…

3d Perspective Preparation*

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/4318/3dworkspaceprepnz6.jpg

Set out your plane space, just lines that guide your shapes references. (Yes, that’s a crappy setup, but it works.)

2d Space, simple, and sweet

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/6726/2dworkspacesbiyhmi3.jpg
2d space is much simpler to work with; we’ll stick with that for now. (This simple grid should be in your head. For now, don’t worry about drawing them, just hit Ctrl+R to bring up the ruler*. Click your mouse in the ruler area and drag a guide out. To rid of it, hold ctrl and click anywhere on the line and drag it all the way back to the ruler.)

*How to section:
3d Perspective lines

Not shiny, and not good quality, but I was doing some renders today, and I ended up with a side project that sprung from the remaining outline of my Boba Fett render:
