View Full Version : [Wip] CCP map - Impetuous

Eh well I would rather post it here for whatever reason. But I am working on a MP map for ccp. Impetuous is a small canyon carved by wind, water, and time on Delta Halo. With a river running through the map from red base to blue base. The structures were made for irrigation of a larger river that flowed to a lake, but eventually the water lessened and there is only one small river now.
It's only on it's second beta, so there is still more to add/change.

Also, the second picture, the ridges of the platform are a different texture now, so I would rather you not get bitchy on me about it. Pictures are also in chronological order. Meaning first when was the very first build (alpha actually) two days ago, second was yesterday, and third was a couple minutes ago (from when this post was made).

You can't see it because of the lighting... It makes everything one solid color. Look in the shadows and you can see what he terrain is like.

Maybe make the structure look damaged? I think it would add to how old they are.

Agreed, it's not flat but it does seem a bit bland.

I recently made a small Halo themed map with terrain that looked as flat in max, but was fine ingame.
Also, map is bad, get out :)

I recently made a small Halo themed map with terrain that looked as flat in max, but was fine ingame.

The tunnel exits are completely unnatural. It implies that the stone used for the walls of the tunnel have absolutely no width.

Better? And I don't feel like making it all special with chamfered top edges because I don't feel like re-UVing the cliffs. Which took about 2 hours to UV...

Not by much. It looks like you didn't feel like making it all special with chamfered top edges. Besides, it wouldn't take more than two minutes to fix the cliff UVs.

Collapse the UV
Detach the bad/unuved faces
Do a simple box UV or something like that
Reattach to the rest of the cliffs
Select UV unwrap
Move and rescale the altered faces to where they should be located on the UV
Weld UV vertices thereIs that so hard?

Looks like an interesting enough map... but what'll really make it shine is a lot of custom textures (I am so FUCKING sick of seeing Blood Gulch grass textures in every single map) and a new skybox. Definitely needs a lot of work, but has potential. The whole box canyon thing is a little overdone though, you should have some branching paths and possibly underground tunnels and overground walkways. Just my opinion.

Tunnels are already thought of and being executed. It has a new sky, thank you Boba ;p. And it really isn't a box canyon, I don't know where you get that from... It's more like an L if anything. Bloodgulch has no grass texture, it is a detail texture for the basemap, and there is no other grass detail texture (that I know of).

Would you even have to go through all of that? I usually just select the faces I want to modify and then apply the modifiers. It leaves all of the other stuff alone, so you don't really have to detatch.

Ya, you don't have to detach it, and you don't have to move it, just target weld the verts.
EDIT: You have the weirdest modeling technique I have ever seen whiplash.

Box canyon doesn't mean shaped like a box, box canyon means it's a canyon with walls on all sides. Making it a non-box canyon would entail adding multiple pathways and possibly a cliff or some other open segment.

Yes, I know that. That's why that kind of map is getting tired. Having a dropoff or undergruond portion of a map, or even aboveground portions of the map (Lockout, as an example?) adds a lot more depth to the gameplay than the usual Halo formula of *spawn, pistol pistol pistol death*, because you have to look up, down, and all around for enemies. Less open space and more dark corners also means much less long range pistol sniping and makes the gameplay more frenzied. What really kicks ass in a map is to have paths that utilize every facet of three dimensions. Indoor, outdoor, below and above. Danger Canyon did that, and Yoyorast Island did that. That's why you still see servers running those maps. I'm not sure why people like Blood Gulch so much but it follows the same basic formula. It has indoor portions, outdoor portions, tunnels valleys hills and cliffs. Maps like Hugeass which are nothing but large outdoor areas get old fast, and that's why that map was a fad you never see played anymore. A map has to cater to all the different playing styles of potential players, or few people will be playing it.
