Holy christ this is difficult.
I've submited applications to the following:
Home Depot
Lowes
Sherwin Landscaping
John Deere Landscaping
Officemax
Staples
Target
Oldnavy
and Best Buy
I have yet to receive in calls or emails. How difficult was it for you to get a first job? Any advice or help?

If any of those places are hiring and you didn't apply online, call them. I called Kohl's asking for a follow up and got interviewed and hired after 2 days. Try that.
Guess Mech beat me to it.

My list dwarfs yours. I've been trying to get a local job since summer started. Closest I got was a second interview at a local circuit city.
edit: The online applications are a joke. Up until last month, I always figured mine never got in, and the times I called to make sure it went through the people there were total bitches about it.

I'll contact Sherwin and John Deere friday. I really don't want to work at the local Carowinds...

Getting a first job is always difficult.
But some tips are here to help:
Handing the manager your resume yourself will surely give you some kudos.
Finding a place that lets you turn in a Job application personally is much better than an online application.
Online applications are much more difficult to get response from. Took me 4 weeks to hear back from a couple places, and a majority on my list didn't even respond.
Fast food is your best bet for a quick job, but a couple days isn't going to give you much feedback. In the business field, they concentrate on company/customer needs. When the company needs employees, then they start going to their Human Resources. With online applications available, the Human Resource departments now take a couple days within their own companies to get anything even started.
Talk to family and friends, see where they work, and what they can do for you. Remember to always write a thank you letter to anyone who has reviewed your situation/helped you out.
Be on the lookout, if you are in school, check out your career center to see if they have any community handhold put down around your area. I'm sure, as there was with my last two schools, that there is some type of job postings at the career centers. Counseling centers may have career postings/wanted signs there, too.
Don't set your expectations too high for a job, you will most likely never get the job you wanted right away. Retail is one of the hardest fields to get into for a first job. They're a tad bit too picky, in my opinion.
If there's anything else I can remember, I'll be sure to post up some more tips... My brains flushed, and I really haven't had the time to think about getting another job.
Good luck,
Lee

No problem. I was the first person in my family to get a job at 16. Youngest anyone had gotten a job. So I did tons of driving, tons of online searching (on 24k, too, mind you), and deffiantely looked for a lot of advice. I followed through with all of that, remembering that the season that I was searching for a job was not the right time of year (no one seemed to be hiring), but with a great amount of effort, confusion, and hard core search/application. I got one.
I have faith in you Teekie! Keep up the work.

And thats bad? If I make 35$ an hour and I work for 5 hours a day. I would make 175 a day, thats 875$ in a 5 day week. Thats good money if you ask me.

My first actual job wasn't hard at all. I just walked up to the desk, asked for an application, filled it out, and waited until they told me i was employed.
It did help that my dad worked there...

Its called sarcasm. You should try it some time. When I was 15 I was making 12 $/hr pushing a broom for 2 hours a day after school at my work. Since then I have moved up in the ranks and now stock drywall for about $250-275 a day.

atty, ill do it.
BTW, my first job was manual labor--i was in charge of destroying a 15 year old deck that had thoroughly rotten through. It was about 30 ft by 20, and it had wooden stools, a gazebo, two lattice walls, and an overhanging wooden-deathtrap-awning. working with a circular saw, sledgehammer, crowbar, i finished ripping out the main deck in about 2 weeks, ripped out the awning in two days. Then, me and my dad rented the biggest u-haul trailer we could get, and i chopped up, loaded, and moved 5.5 tons of wood from my house to the dump in two trips. Oh yea, and while i was chopping up wood to fit it all on the trailer, i got to use this beauty (http://store.justonemoretool.com/mi10ampsusa.html).
I got $500 for it, and im happy with that.

I'm yet to get myfirst job, applied everywhere, but no one wants me >_>
Been having massive pressure form my girlfriend and family, but... this town fails and has NO work. If I lived somewhere that needed people for things like video editing, web design etc, I'd be fine, but all this town has, is an Abotoir.
I find that the only way people get work HERE is who they know. It seems credentials and qualifications don't mean shit here. People just get jobs because they know someone in the industry, or are a family member or good friend. I think it's quite fucked. Not sure if it's like that everywhere.
