View Full Version : The Warthog - REALIZED

What do you think? Aside from the tires, the fact that the turret looks like it's not centered well, and the bad paint job, it looks pretty good. ;)
Driving Under the Influence of Awesome
Um. The dudes at WETA made a Warthog. I don’t mean that they made a big plastic thing that looks like a Warthog. I mean they built a fully-functioning, four-wheel steering, powerful, off-road vehicle with a machine gun on the back. At the correct scale. If you live near Wellington, New Zealand, you might even see some crazy machine-shop dude from WETA fishtailing around your base, ahem, I mean neighborhood.
What’s it for? Well, a couple of things – one of which will be one of the shorts coming from director Neill Blomkamp. We sort of blindsided you guys with the first short (Arms Race) – it had little to no context or explanation, but when you see it as it was originally intended – as part of an overall narrative, you might just pee your pants. And if you don’t, then the picture below will certainly cause some leakage.
"Goddamn. It’s a Warthog."

Needs more of what Dole said. It looks to plastic and shiny to me. I was thinking of doing a project like this. Right now the design doesn't really impress. But I'm sure they'll refine it.

I'd like to see more about that suspension system. At UTk, friends of mine from the metal shop in the art and architecture building talked about making one based on the halo 1 model, but couldn't figure out how to get the engine working with the suspension.

It [the Hog as it appears ingame] has an electric motor in each suspension arm and a main one in the front, I think.

No, the end of each arm houses the steering's swivel-assembly. The actual drive may be in chain drive form, like the mongoose appears to have, or in a shaft (more likely in a high power vehicle). It runs on fuel.
OR: It uses the gas engine to charge a generator which powers motors located at the top of each suspension arm, but not in the hub at the end, and they would turn a shaft.

Yeah I still say that Halo is fucking epic and awesome, but stylized, and would be awesome in CG (like the Halo Wars trailer, or the Starry Night commercial), but when translated to real life it just somehow doesn't work, because let's face it, Halo is not realistic.
That hog is awesome, but it's still cheesy, cause it's just unrealistic. Still, I'd love to see it barreling across an open plain at 100 km/hr.
Dole

Agreed. The movie would look best if reminiscent of Starry Night, and live actors can be greenscreen'd the same way the two kids in the beginning of the trailer were.

it's not that different than a jeep wrangler anyway.
all that needs to be done is put in the appropriate safety equipment and take off the gun...I don't see how it can't be street legal then. It's got fuckin cupholders already...it can't be that far off.

i actually made a lego prototype of the suspension once. You have to really watch out for the twisting of the axle, and if you've been up to date on many cars of the future, the "engine" is really just a really supercharged electric in every wheel like the game. The engine you see ingame is really a large generator to supply the huge power of the engines. Check this out, im pretty sure this technique could be applied to a real life warthog model with correct suspension.

it looks like the axles are really close together, and they're turning some super-durable chains which are linked to the wheels.
Like this(pardon my shitty MsPaint drawing...):
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b164/nickwarr_182/Warthogsuspension.jpg
But about how the wheels turn, I have no clue!
Dole
July 21st, 2007, 07:04 PM
No, he means in real life.
The way it would work in the video game is to have the wheels powered by auxiliary motors at the end of the drive props, and the motors are a part of free-rotating lateral joint mechanisms (which allow for the independent steering)... either that or there are power converters along the drive props that transfer motion from the engine to the stem of the wheel.
However, in real life (with modern technology at least) the drive props couldn't be free-standing, and would collapse under the load of the vehicle without a highly advanced suspension system. It is that suspension system which Zeph is specifically inquiring about.

look at the front wheel - seems like there's a vertical rod connecting the wheel to the chassis.
The undercarriage of this hog seems much more complex anyway (what is that thing behind/under the front suspension arm?)...need more pics!!!

:O Thank you for noticing that. I knew something seemed off about it. I wonder if the machine gun like, actually spins and feeds the "bullets" through? That would be epic for whatever this is going in. That way it wouldn't be all cheesy looking. Is this thing for Arm's Race?

Oh and to all you people asking how many you think were produced. I'm assuming a lot, since it's going to be in a short film. In almost any vehicle scene in a big production there are at least three of the featured vehicle. Albeit, they are all different from each other, such as stunt driving versions, and versions with no engines that have REALLY detailed interiors for green-screen shots of the driver/passengers.
I'm sure they'll cut you in on a non-functional one for a mere 1 mil.

Stormwing

guys, new info.
The hog was built in just six weeks.
The 4 wheel steering isn't just warthog style. It's Jeep Hurricane style, as in it can crab crawl.
The gun "works". How exactly, I don't know, but it's not just an unmoving stupid little prop. Maybe the turret spins, maybe the barrels spin, idk. But they say it works, so hmmm.
It has airbags. And since it's already got airbags, I wouldn't necessarily put seat belts out of the picture.
I think this is fully street legal already.
