Random poll: who here is a Win32 coder? What language are you comfortable with?

Please also respond mentioning how experienced you are in those areas. I want to know who is serious with coding; not just script kiddies who make one little program that does something extremely basic, and then think they're totally awesome.

I code in C#. I'm not the best, but I'm learning. While I can't crank out a rendering engine or anything super-impressive, I can make functional applications that do useful things.

C++ FTW. But for UI apps, I use visual basic. I don't know much about c#, but since its .net, it doesn't matter nor make much difference as the vb.net, j#, c#, and c++.net code all get compiled into the same intermediate code that is interpreted by the .net framework. Well as my CS professor explains.

I'm also pretty crafty as ActionScript for flash. Heres my favorites: 3d cube, (http://img526.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cubepg6.swf)smash pong, (http://img260.imageshack.us/my.php?image=paddleball204v2li8.swf) and smash hockey. (http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=smashhockeyam3.swf)

I'm comfortable making simple games using Blitz3d, which is based off of Basic. I'm not capable of programming something like Doom on it, but I did make that shitty game for school a few months back xD.

I'm just getting into C and C++. I haven't been able to put too much time into it at all, but I can make simple printf/cout console apps and little shit like that

VB 6, VB.net, C#, C++, Python, and PHP.
I've been working with VB6 since I was 10, good times, good times... Tons of incomplete projects as well as finished ones. GMM (chat room program) is evolving into my new Pandemic IM (http://forums.halomods.com/viewtopic.php?t=63408) using some of the same basic ideas (only in .net). There was also the UHMM, which I must say did get a map in game without the use of another modeling program, therefore achieving its original goal (plus my terrain drawing tool is awesome in its own respect). Also made a few other various tools like a desktop manager.
VB.net I picked up while moving to a Pocket PC (eVB is based on VB.net, so I thought "what the hell?" and went on with .net). Currently working on Pandemic. Smaller projects include my clipping distance extender and a tool to generate a detailed Excel document for Google Analytics through the use of XML reports that it downloads and reads through.
ASP.net with VB was also something I was working on for a few weeks - my first job, actually, $8 an hour, worked 8 to 5, only major project dumped data from an MSSQL server.
VBA deserves mention, too, though, as it varies so much from both VB6 and VB.net. I made some dynamic spreadsheets for my dad this one time. They were great.
I use Python for various UDP server things because it's cross-platform and the socket libraries are :awesome: - much better than the crap that comes with .Net. Python is also great for other things. I originally learned it during a 2 week summer project at Shawnee State University where we made games in small groups/solo. I first started using the socket libraries when helping a student at the college get their own networked game working. I came out of that with a working online top-down 2d helicopter battle game which everyone enjoyed playing.
C# I started learning at the beginning of the year for XNA.
C++ I didn't get into much, just some standard things for a semester course (probably the easiest shit ever, I finished the entire thing in a total of 2 weeks, spread out with a day of work followed by a week of other things).
Can't stress enough what I've done with PHP (http://home.oasis-games.com/).

All in all, I tend to mix different languages together to get things done. PHP, Python, and VB6 combined to form my first chat room program, and PHP will undoubtedly return for use with Pandemic.

y hello thar, long time no see, h2v.

lesse, for me, it's VB (hate it), C++, Java (despise it), PHP, and... who's ready for this... TCL. Anyone ever heard of TCL? I'd never heard of it until a couple of months ago. Had to do a total crash course on it for my job here. It's a strange language, kind of like Perl, I'm told, but I've never used Perl. But I made what's basically a direct connect instant messenger. :iia:

Seriously, I'm not surprised at all that only 4 people do Java (I'm using nothing but Java at the moment, and I seriously think I am in hell), but I'm surprised so few people do PHP. PHP rocks, everybody! Join the fun!

I hate Java because it is about as resilient as a house made of toothpicks. If you breathe at it wrong, it breaks.

My application has just stopped working for no reason. I didn't change anything, I didn't do anything, I was just using it one minute and refreshed the page and then it just stopped. No explanation, no error message, no stack trace, no possibility of deriving a solution. I have been working all day trying to get it to work again- it works on everybody else's computer but not on mine. It's not the application, and it's not the server, so that means there is just something wrong with Java on my machine.

*suppresses a roar of fury*

It doesn't pain me to say this. In fact, it's kind of nice to let off some steam in a little mini-rant. Java ftl. I miss PHP.

The company I have an internship at uses a lot of Java. I don't know why there is so much Java hate though. What are the best languages to learn?

Kornman00
August 4th, 2007, 04:45 PM
Well, when you say "best", it really depends on WHAT you're wanting to do and the PLATFORM(S) you're targeting.

I just can't stand Java's design and standards. And besides, its not even a pure OO language, despite what teachers will try to spoon feed your drone brains for their evil nazi army D:

I just made a cryptic conditional:

That's before I simplified it. Kudos to anyone who can figure it out XD

It's javascript, and yes I could use date functions, but this way is more efficient and more elegant, imo. If by hideous you mean confusing, then yes, but I could either do it that way, which really isn't too hard to understand, or I could separate it into 4 different checks or use someone else's obese inefficient function, which is just unnecessary.

Well here's what I would do with that piece of code. Take each sub-condition and assign it to its own boolean variable. When you perform the comprehensive check, the boolean variable names act as documentation. It's easier to manage and equally efficient.
