It seems as though macs are really making a comeback. Ipod and boot camp were the best choices they ever made.

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
15-inch non-glossy widescreen, 1440 x 900
2 GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM
160 GB SATA 7200rpm
8x double-layer SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 256MB SDRAM

The last being a key deciding factor in my purchase.

Can't wait to see how Ultimate runs on this. It's coming in the mail from Newegg tomorrow.

Nice, be sure to give us a word back on how it runs with Vista. I'll be looking for a school laptop in the coming months, a Macbook Pro with Vista has been on my mind for some time. :)

Why non-glossy though? Its a free upgrade.

TheGhost
July 30th, 2007, 02:33 PM
I wouldn't consider it an "upgrade" - it's more of a preference. If I'm ever using this outside or anything like that, you know, any place with the SUN (may not be an issue for some of you) - I don't want to have to deal with the glare. Or any glare in general. Also better viewing angles because you don't get a reflection.

I was wanting to get a macbook, but the price was too much for the hardware inside.

TheGhost
July 30th, 2007, 05:17 PM
I was drawn by the hardware, yes. I was mostly buying the MacBook Pro for its components and not necessarily the software / OS. I was looking for a 15-inch laptop that had an 8600 GT and only 5 or 6 of said combinations existed, one of which was the MacBook Pro. However, I've been a big Windows guy since day 1, so I'll run Boot Camp - but I see myself mostly booting to Vista. It's a bit pricey but I say you get what you pay for. My second choice was the 15-inch Alienware, but it still has outdated graphics.

Mine is a 17inch and uses ATI (ftw).

Why am I thinking mine has a 16x superdrive . Maybe I'm just thinking of my dvd burner back in the states...

Bah, my 15" alienware system blows. I have had 4 RMAs on my graphics card (7600 GO 256mb), 1 on my heat sync, and I have even had my system motherboard replaced. They are not designed well for lasting very long. The only descent alienware laptops are the 17" and 19" models with the SLI gfx cards. I regret not going with the macbook pro as well.

Most of apple's computers are very high end and well designed for the most high end of professional usage, its ashamed they aren't used as or made to be gaming machines.

How much did you pay for those specs? I've always thought Macbook Pros were a tad overpriced - they have good specs, but really, a similarly spec'd laptop from Sager, Cyberpower, or Asus can be had for at least $500 less. The only aspect I like about Macbook Pros is their built-in iSight, which has amazing quality, but other companies are giving us 2-MP webcams...

For around $1500 I could customize a 2.00Ghz C2D (slower, but still has 4 MB cache), 2 GB 667 DDR2 RAM, 160GB 5400rpm hard drive (a 7200rpm HDD in a laptop is very taxing on battery life), and a Geforce 8600 or 8700. Coming from ASUS by the way.

But where's all those great games for Mac? Last I heard, all an 8600 could really game up intensely was the default chess game that came with it. (Of course, while rendering some awesomesauce movies and the like)

Yes, of course you can play games, in contrary to what most ignorant people think. But they aren't built specialized for gaming like Alienware for example.

That is true. I wonder if Apple will ever build a dedicated gaming laptop? They may be working on software to run Windows coded apps inside Mac OS. There is already software (http://codeweavers.com) that can do so, but it's limited at this time.

yeah, the 8600/8700 is the best for DX10 in laptops. The Geforce Go 7950 and 7900 GTX are truly the best though (DX9c).

tbh ExAm, I doubt they will ever do that. Unless they come out with the next best resource that's as documented and used as DirectX, then maybe... Just maybe. Or unless OpenGL just all of the sudden kicks major ass.

Not only is that software limited, but it's not made by anyone associated with either OS. They are just coding it for a little cash. If you want to run games on a mac, just go buy Vista and throw it on there. (Given you have the intel processor)

Or play Halo. Or Quake 3. Or chess.

Yeah, but it's not about just pure benchmark scores. For example, the 8 series can decode high definition much better/faster than older gen cards. Also, my notebook can get 5 hours of battery life under OS X, whereas the battery life on a machine with those "better" cards on it is terrible. I guess it all comes down to what you're using the laptop for. If you're going to be using a laptop primarily as a desktop replacement for gaming, then yes, of course you wouldn't get a MBP.

Im still happy with my $100 Bargen-buy on a GateWay 15.4inch with an Intel 1.86Ghz Dual-core processor, 1 gig Ram, WD SATA 120gig HDD, but a POS G945 integrated GFX card (although it runs halo fine on High at 1024x768.) But this is not a replacement for my desktop, which still kicks ass at everything i throw at it.

I support anyone who goes mac. The only reason i dont have one is price. (AND THAT F*CKING ONE BUTTON MOUSE!!!!!)

As for the laptops, you can set right click as a two fingered tap on the touchpad in the preferences, and scrolling to a two fingered drag.
