View Full Version : Falling Leaf Systems: Alky Update!

The official release of XP compatability library for halo 2 release date has been announced! I have had my doubts, but I have been waiting for this a long time now. It supposed to support multiplayer as well as live. Anyways, the release date is set for the 15th, however, there may be delays. This was originally supposed to be out in late july. Heres the quote from the site:
Alky for Games - Free Edition
The Free Edition of Alky for Games is expected to launch on the 15th of August 2007 with full support for Halo 2. Support for Shadowrun will be added shortly thereafter.
There are also other tools out as well that allow further XP compatibility for vista applications such as the side bar, screen savers etc. The DX10 compatibility libraries for XP aren't set for release until this winter though... :/
Heres the link to the update. (http://www.fallingleafsystems.com/compatibility/)

Are they allowed to do that, make Halo 2 run on XP? Microsoft would sue the pants off them.

Are they allowed to do that, make Halo 2 run on XP? Microsoft would sue the pants off them. The law protects them from being sued for that unless they violate any copyright infringements which they aren't. Its only going to be a set of their own dlls that allow you to run vista games in xp. Besides, other makers of xp loaders weren't sued, nor were makers of compatibility libraries for Linux and OSX to run windows games.

August 6th, 2007, 09:34 PM
I have only seen a maximum of 30 players online once. Most of which are people alone all by themselves in their own gold only server. Usually theres about 15 to 20 players online on average. Boy did this game screw up... However, the player counts might triple once XP users can play online. It may sky rocket to be like Halo PC if XP becomes officially supported via update by microsoft and the newer version is put up on the shelves at game stores that support xp.

Why are there gold only servers? Does halo 2 make player hosted games gold only by default?

Bean;133460']Wow. So, Unless I want to fork over $50 dollars in addition to what I've already paid I can't play my own maps with my friends?
Exactly. Unless you can convince one of your friends to have the dedicated server dictate their computer. They won't be able to play however. If you are running the dedicated server, you can't play online while the dedicated server is running. This is done so you have no work around purchasing a gold subscription. Also, hamachi and other LAN tunneling applications have been blocked by h2v for the same reason. Welcome to microsoft's vision for the future of PC online gaming.

Is there some way to block that feature? I mean it seems a little out of the way to incooperate it into the game itself. Maybe it originates with windows live?

Bean;133471']Is there some way to block that feature? I mean it seems a little out of the way to incooperate it into the game itself. Maybe it originates with windows live? Not unless you have 2 separate Internet service providers and have one PC hooked up to the one service for your gaming computer, and another to the computer which you will run the dedicated server on. I can't think of any other way around it. And yes windows live is to blame. They went way out of their way to make the game vista exclusive, so I'm pretty sure they also went way out of their way to also make the game enforce usage of Live on the players.

Haha...
A computer is litterally a waste of money. All we do is upgrade relentlessly, giving others money, and a chance to build more tech that will make us buy more. And more and more... it's a vicious cycle. I wish I never had gotten into my computer fetish sometimes.

30 people in LIVE?!?! You must have some weird firewall settings preventing you from seeing games or something. I always see ~50-150.

There is more people who play halo 2 on XP than Vista. You cant play online on xp, hense why the numbers are low, I bet if this alky thingy works online numbers will increase dramatically.
Not everyone has run out and bought vista you know, yes there has been alot of vista sales but still.

I'm one of those people. I am in no rush to go off and get the new OS, especially when the only thing I'm missing out on is Halo 2 Vista, and from all of this news, apparently I'm not missing out on much. Then this comes around, and it seems I won't be missing out at all.

I'm pretty confident that the player numbers will increase drastically once XP players can play online. But still another issues thats working like bug repellent against gamers is paying for Live. Silver feels like a 'free trial' of online multiplayer with the most basic of FPS online feature disabled unless you pay recurring subscription fees for Live. I still never understood how they managed to get away with charging for online multiplayer on the xbox, but I guess its because it was something new to console gamers.

Theres about 45 people on right now :O
On another note:
Our excitement over the announcement of "Alky for Applications" is tempered by the fact that we regretfully also announce that support for Halo 2 and Shadowrun will not come until the middle or end of August. The main reason for the short delay stems from the difficulty of implementing Windows Live support in a truly transparent manner. It has proven more difficult than we first envisioned, but we are making great strides. While many will be disappointed or even a bit angry, we hope that the prevention of having your Live account banned will be worth the wait.

Not sure if anybody cares but you guys are probably looking at the server list with "Show Full Servers toggled OFF". You can see this by looking at the server list by selecting Custom.
At peak hours this game usually has 100, 200+ players. Not much but hardly 30-40.

Idk but i have the feeling this whole Live thing for halo 2 didnt add any fancy extra options and functions for gold members (lol) to the game but locked down the standard ones for the cheap Silver ppl. omg..so an already crappy game gets even crappier if ur not willing to pay an extra 100+ Bucks-damn. Could be wrong though like most of the time :(
Back on topic: First one to develop a fully working version H2 for XP gets a cookie and 10 bucks for the upcoming MS lawsiuit. Just remember: Release it BEFORE bill gates sues your ass off.

Why would Microsoft care if we were on? We bought the game, They get their money, Quite a few people have already switched to Vista. Leaving almost a thousand people out of this switch isn't going to hurt them, they make money from other things, gotta remember that.
They gave us Windows for a reason. To do our daily jobs, work and other things we may or may not enjoy, but just to make our lives easier. Now, over the years they've sought to take greed in this old generosity to make them even more rich they already fucking are. As far as I'm concerned, with the anger they might have about money and Halo for Vista only, they can blow that shit out their ass.
Fin.
Note: Their greed came waaayy before Halo.
