In my 5 weeks of total loneliness (with parents...but without access to a computer or the most "superior"...no not gawd...the internet) I thought of bringing back the Portal Gun for HaloCE and then H2V in near future.

Me (and I think the other members who worked on the Portal Gun agree with this) were tired of hearing all those little kiddies who complain that it is impossible to metaswap a teleporter, or whatever they do with HMT, and tell us that this whole thing is fake.

So I thought of the following features:

-Multiplayer
-Syncing (Everyone can pick it up and shoot etc.)
-Attaches to Vehicles/Players (everyone that played the Portal UT Mod knows what I'm talking about)
-Public


How?

I have a theory about all the things that have to be done in order to work but ONLY the dedi server needs the app to be running.

I don't want it to be a major success...even if it runs only for one day I would be happy because I'm sure it will be a lot of fun.

So what do I need?

The following things are not vital but they will improve gameplay a lot.

I need a weapon model. Anything Sci-Fi looking works.

I need a projectile model with flares and light effects also Sci-Fi looking. If no one is going to do this I'm going to try my luck on that.

The Portals themselves, nothing major. Scenery that look also Sci-Fi and some lighteffects etc.

For the tagging I need to ask some questions,maybe.


Next thing is to decide on which map this is going to take place.
You guys can suggest any map that makes sense in your opinion to put a Portal Gun in. Custom or Standard, doesn't matter.

My vote goes to Danger Canyon.

Any suggestions and helping hands are welcome :)

Progress Report 08/11/07:

-I asked Sunny to do the projectile and portal effects and he agreed to do them

-I finished almost all the code (some tests and I need Locke's help still on some things)

-We chose "Chiller" by NeuroKoNeza as the map of choice since it will suit this map very well. I hope I can get the permission from him since we have to modify the map. Pictures below.

-Tweek is still working on the weapon

-Public Beta soon

Well Sunny is pretty sick at the moment so I won't bother asking him how it goes cause he is doing this on his vacation somewhere else. ;)

I don't know how much Sunny will do...but we may need someone for minor misc stuff...like shooting particles etc...

We had to change the whole concept so it's a 2 way portals now. :)

We also couldn't do secondary fire, instead the portals are going to change with each 2nd shot.

I cleaned my tags set and extracted all the tags from Chiller and got the permission from NeuroKoNeza to use his map. :)

make some little scribbls of what you want, 1 handed, 2 handed, edge, rounded crap like that. i've got some ideas, aim me.

This would be cool in H2v, especially because you can have camera-map shaders, and you could get a model that would render a camera from one portal to another, making for visual awesomes.

It'd be cool to stick it in a custom map, to give more attention to some underappreciated custom map. There are a lot of those. But for stock maps, I suggest Ice Fields because it looks like it would be fun to mess with vehicles on the bridge.

it kind of got screwed up and stuff but on a good graphics card it looked all nice and shiny, lol. i was trying to make a weapon for a projectile i made and i thought it might fit your weapon. you can use this model if you want, model a different model off of the idea, or create a different one. i dont really care but, if you do want it... you will have to wait about 2 weeks because im going on vacation tomorrow.

Considering the amount of power it takes to make a a hole in which you can travel through an other place, I believe that it should be some kind of a heavy sci-fi ish two handed gun with a powerful recoil.

Perhaps something similar to this.

I havent played it in a while, and its one of the few halo maps where ive had more fun than playing bloodgulch.

it's small, it's close quartered, and theres an ass load of walls, ceilings and floors :D!

I think that map chiller wich is alredy a superfun map is to small for your portal gun. But thats just me!

Well you aren't suppose to shoot the portal across the map :p

The only "problem" with this map is that there is a cage in the middle you can't enter/exit but you can teleport too. So theoretically you can cage in the whole opposing team :lol:

I don't have to mention that finding the addresses is a pain in the ass but Locke has a special and quick method to find them.

But the public beta is still ahead :)

Wow, yea I just saw the video. That's amazing. Is this done in Halo PC or CE? If it's done in PC that must have been some serious internal coding you messed with. Or maybe it was just HMT. Who knows. :D

Its CE, it does not use HMT. It works on the fly, where you shoot you can teleport to and fro

I don't understand, you wanted it so that one player could spawn multiple portal sets?

No...first we wanted to
Primary Trigger --> Entrance | Secondary Trigger -->Exit
Then we realized we couldn't differ the secondary trigger from the primary so we made it
Shoot-->Entrance|Shoot again-->Exit|Shoot again-->Entrance

Before you could only enter at one portal and exit at the other...now you can go both ways.

Shoot-->Portal Enter/Exit | Shoot-->Portal Enter/Exit

And with theories I meant why things didn't work or how the engine is doing some thing and that's why we couldn't do other things.

Like I forgot that scenery XYZ doesn't sync >.<
