View Full Version : [WIP] Compound
paladin

I have been hesitant to make this public, mainly because the lack of progress I make on it each week. This is more of a side project I work on in my spare time and have been working on for about 7 months or so now. It has gone through several transformations, has been implemented into Halo CE a few times, and has very little original geometry visible.
This map is far from done. It has gone through 3 total makeovers since I've started it and I assume it will go through a few more in the future. The reason why I bring it public is because I want it to be for Halo Vista, which I do not have, yet. Which makes it sort of hard to do. In a nut shell, I am looking for a partner to port it for me.
The map is a futuristic military compound found in the rocky coasts of Africa. Nestled into the wind-blown sandstone lies several bunkers and platforms that once saw a large amount of equipment. Now, with recent events in the Covenant-Human war, it has been abandoned and awaits demolition, scheduled on an unconfirmed date.

A quick fly through of the map, I mean quick will be up shortly. I can't figure out how to slow the frame rate down.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=rva-2rGIyaY
Overall, I'd say that the make is about 40% done with. That is though, not including the details I will go back add.
So, hows it look so far.

I dunno, I like those people who have ambitious projects to create a whole new world in a map and have 50 polygons of work to show for it.
But this map looks like it has the asymmetrical goodness that makes levels like Lockout so popular. Plus, it's very well modeled. Good job.

I finally got Vista last Friday, so i have been playing around with the editing kit. Im still trying to figure somethings out, but I might have a first build in game soon.
About naming bitmaps in max, the prefix to the name is the location of the bitmap. for example: f_im is forerunner_industrial metals. so a bitmap in the zanzibar folder would be m_z?
Llama Juice
August 26th, 2007, 03:49 PM
Nope, the prefix to the material name is decided by the .shader_collections file.
According to that the prefix for the zanzibar folder is the word "zanzibar"
you can find the .shader_collections file in tags/scenarios/shaders/
paladin
August 27th, 2007, 12:53 AM
Ok, this is really starting to get to me. I cannot figure out the naming system for bitmaps.
I have a custom .tif is located at data\scenarios\bitmaps\multi\compound "main_cliff.tif"\
So in max, do i call it "compound main_cliff"?
the bitmap at tags\scenarios\bitmaps\multi\compound "main_cliff.bitmap"
the shader at tags\scenarios\shaders\multi\compound "cliff.shader"
So when I compile the map it doesn't find the the bitmap of shader. What am I doing wrong :(

Its quite interesting seeing how the map evolved over the months. The first pic I saw was back when it was Zanzibar V2, and I only see one thing from that stage still in the map (Active Camouflage Tower).

I am still working with the actual water line. On one side there is actually a beach path. Currently it is about waste deep water.
Again nothing is permanent and this is still a pre-alpha model thats only about 30% or so done. But I will try my best to incorporate a beach path in the map.:)

let me get this stright, you're going by the word of some one on the internet, who go the game off of ebay, that all you could know, could be some fat old guy trying to trick you. :shake: if you believe that, then I might believe that there is a Halo 3 PC beta coming out in Dec. dude, until Bungie posts a weekly update or something about it saying there is a Halo 3 map called compound, or I see it with my own eyes, on my TV, with my Xbox 360, with my copy of Halo 3, I'm not going to believe you. October 8th, 2007, 11:57 PM
Hey guys! Sorry for the down time. There has been a million things going on right now. I know it may seem like this has not made any progress, but it has! Halo 3 has really taken a chunk of my time away; so has school. I recently upgraded my operating system from the 32-bit VHP to 64-bit VHP and so I have been busy porting my files. The bad thing is I only stored my data sets and not my tag sets, so I will have to recreate the shaders for the map. But that is not too bad because I have a whole new texture set I have been working on. After playing Halo 3, especially High Grounds which was a huge inspiration for this map, I have been able to go back and add tremendous amounts of detail. The modeling still continues. The base model is near complete but I am still moving various parts around to make the game play better.
Again, I am sorry for the lack of updates, but I promise that soon it will be at least playable for at least a select few. Ill update later with some of the new content, but for now just take my word that it is still trucking along.

Certain objects, and parts of the map to get it fully functiong in game.
One thing is an anchor. A larger Medgafreighter anchor as kind of a monument for the level.
Just details to make the map more realistic. Potentially I would like to have someone texture it and get it in game. I like modeling, not so much the other stuff.

I have a suggestion - give each building a definite purpose. Is it a warehouse, a communications center, a barracks, etc.? It helps to have locations that can be easily recognized by anyone who is playing on the map, and also makes it more aesthetically accessible to the player.

Trust me, they do. Ive put hours of thought into the new layout and making sure each has a tactical purpose and no bottle necks.
Each area has essentially an entrance and exit. The "bases" aka where objective are located, not necessarily a base, are either in a central area or have multiple (3 or 4) ways of accessing them.

If the sandy "floor"/area is accessible, awesome. If not, still awesome. This will definitely be THE H2V custom map. This is one of the first maps I've seen in a while where I can actually picture the gameplay.

Yeah you can, its going to be an essential part of an objective game type.

Any expected time for "testing"? Or are you still deep into the modeling part.
I look forward to playing in this one as well. You've got a lot of us excited..
No pressure...

Its been test lots of times. A few people played with me on the internet, they jsut joined my game and dled the map. Most of them said it sucked because there were no textures, but I was testing heights.

Lalalalalalalalala can't hear you!
We need more H2v maps to hopefully give the mod community a good kick start. I doubt this will do it alone but with a few others good maps there's a possibility that people might actually start using the game.
