View Full Version : Quake Zero: Free, Fast, Web-based

Here are some interesting facts about the upcoming Quake Zero game.

It's free:

QZ will be a free web-based version of Quake 3 (http://kotaku.com/gaming/quake-3/) multiplayer. Todd Hollenshead told me they decided to kick off this project for several reasons.First and foremost, id hated to see their game, once quite popular for online matches, losing its prominence in the online gaming scene, this will allow virtually anyone with a computer to play matches of their games.

Hollenshead said id also wanted to dip their toe in in-game advertising, and that this seemed like the best way to approach it. So expect ads to be running on the web page when you play Quake Zero, but free games for ads seem absolutely fine to me.

It's easy to get:

TTimo and Scott have the game launching off a web browser, not playing in a web browser, but launching off a web browser. That's the idea of it. You kind of go into a web interface to see what the community is all about, let you see what competitions are going on, how you play the game, etc. Kind of like how a poker site works, you kind of go there and see what's going on and with one click, you start your download of the game and then play in a test game or training mode until the download completes. After a couple minutes of practicing, you have the full Quake 3 experience and can start playing verse anyone in the world.

It doesn't demand an expensive machine:

Basically we'll do some new free rendering effects that we can throw to the video card and get cool little effects, new explosions, glow, and other things that won't tax the system. We really want it to play at 60 FPS or higher on EVERYONE's system, and we really don't want things to bog it down.

They're also working on a true sequel to Quake III Arena, but they're not saying much about it yet.

Sounds pretty cool, I love it when people are just nice enough to make free things for people to enjoy, especially when it's quality work with effort behind it.

My life has been fulfilled completely. I can now play my favorite old multiplayer shooter on my school's shitty computers and at the same time when I get home I can play the shiny new version of Quake 3 Arena. <3 <3 <3. This and Quake Wars look awesome.

They did this with Wolfenstein and Tribes. Not quite sure about this one, since the only Quake game I like was the first and second one.

Another reason why I love ID. It would be awesome if it works on the PSP. Plus, this would be famous for school lan parties.

"id" isn't an acronym, it's Freud's word for the instinctual part of your brain.

While I think this is cool, I'm somewhat saddened to see the hallowed Quake 3 Arena reduced to having ingame ads. We'll see how it plays out, I guess.

A free quality shooter that can be launched off the web without downloading?

Doubt I can play at school though thanks to those darn filters.

But sounds good, and this is why iD software is awesome.

Just don't let the IT guy walk in on you. That would be truly epic.

the difference with those (idk about tribes) is they are free to download games, i think this will be more browser oriented

granted, hes a retard (funny guy, but an idiot), but it scared the shit out of me, naturally i had a window of an old essay out and i quickly jumped away.

You're still downloading the game, but all the content downloads while you do a small training mission. Their goal is to make it seamless, like the "Tray and Play" feature from Halo 2 Vista.

I do hope they have a version that you can download in case they block the site but not the game's networking itself.

Then again, I could always throw Quake III on a flash drive if that works >___>

The USB drive would need to have a constant drive letter, such as K:/, to be able to run Quake 3 from it. I did it with Far Cry.

heh, almost everyone in my school stores N64 and GBA emulators on flash drives and uses them on school computers. I guess Quake 3 is a viable option if the computer is powerful enough (the most powerful PCs in my school have 2.8Ghz P4s, 256 MB shared RAM, Intel Extreme Graphics Garbage 2).

Can't wait to see how this Quake 0 turns out, though I probably won't be playing it. But I can predict a lot of school LAN matches...after all some people are still sneaking CS v1.5 onto school computers.

That just about exactly describes my school (http://www.hthla.org/hth/).

My sister has a Intel Extreme Failure integrated and she can run quake 3.

Yeah, Quake 3 will run on just about any relatively modern system (I'd say anything from 2000 to now).

I have Q3 Arena Gold and I'm going to throw the mac and PC versions onto my flash drive later ^___^.

Too bad the Quake Wars Public Beta sucks BADLY....it held such promise.

As for this.....FINALLY something to do at my secondary job at the video store! :D

is that really a bad game? man after playing wolfenstien enemy territory for about 6 months (and giving the big H a long rest), i was really hopin for a decent 'sequel'.

i think it was just rushed, with all the delays and what not. too bad too, had a great concept.

i guess quake 0 will have to satisfy my hunger for free games a little longer.

yeah....the sound is irratating as hell and the gamplay is kinda boring. I will still purchase the game for a LAN thing but IMHO the game itself is not that good at all.
