Okay well, I set up the sound through guide > blah blah and set up the sound to the right device. I went to settings > audio > Max volume & headphones.

I can hear the monks go 'Ooooooooohhh' when the loading screen pops up, but other than that I hear nothing. Yes all my volumes are at the normal things and I checked my sound drivers and re-installed, still nothing.

I have the same issue. I tried the online help crap but nothing. I am using AC97 with fresh drivers and still cannot play. Can you play the files in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo 2\movie ? I can play the low in wmplayer but can only get the high res stuff to play with Nero show time or VLC!

I have AC'97 too, however mine works fine. Did you use tray and play to install halo? if you didnt try opening vista's volume control and set what device your using.

Here's how to fix the all-sound coming through headset thing:

Plug in the headset. Make sure it's recognized by the computer.
Click Start -> Control Panel.
Click Hardware and Sound -> Sound.
Your headset, and your speakers should appear in there.
Click your speakers, and then "Set as Default", and then press Apply.
Problem solved. And you can still use the headset.

I can hear everything besides the game.

I've noticed this problem only persists when I change settings while the game is running. Try adjusting your settings before or after you run the game. I had to switch between my front/rear panel audio before the new driver came out for it, and I noticed that if I didn't hear any audio, it's because I changed the audio settings while it was running.

Once again, try adjusting your settings while H2V is not running (Before or after playing).

Hey Halo2 fans I have tried everything posted so far without any luck. Besides the sound problem I also have login live promlems.

When starting Halo2 the sound plays for about 5 to 7 seconds and then from that point on there is no sound at all. My sound setup has worked flawlessly from the time I installed Vista 32 bit 4 months ago. (installed easier than XP Pro!) If you look in the movie directory in Halo2 you will find 3 files there, they are intro movies, only the low res intro plays in windows media player with sound, the other 2 play without sound! Odd I think!
I also have Live login problems. If I do not update HAlo2 I can login to Live but I cannot get the update when it pops up and cannot play. If I update manually I cannot login to Live! If I go to the Xbox live web page or the windows live web page I can login and see my profile! So its there but can't login thru Halo2!Here are my basic system hardware configs. Any more ideas would be great as MS is slow to react!!!

Hey all I found my problem with the Halo2 sound! Unlike the original Halo, Halo2 does not like a SPDIF or digital interface for the sound output. As soon as I changed back to the anolog speaker connections the sound was OK! This sounds backwards considering Halo2 is newer but Its working now so the only outstanding problem is the Live login!;)
