Just got Red Orchestra: Ostfront. Damn, that game owns... it's probably the most realistic WWII game I've ever played (with the possible exception of BiA). It's like BF'42, done right.

Also, you can do this (http://youtube.com/watch?v=SidF5rg_jWE). My friend Jon got loltillery'd by that guy the other day, and I tried that myself earlier :p So cheap, but so fun...

Anyone else played it or run into >:D ingame?

Screw anyone with a weak stomach...

I was just playing on Rakowice (snowy airstrip under attack by the Russians) with my new clanmates, as a sniper with the G43 (awesome gun). Anyways, another guy walked around the corner in front of me, my ears started ringing, dirt and red stuff went everywhere and a second or so later I see this...

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b335/rossmum/ros-20061223-164108.jpg

Mmmm, pretty. Gives a new meaning to the word 'disarmed', huh? Anyways, I wait a few seconds and then - VERY CAREFULLY - move around the corner and see an SU-76 self-propelled gun sitting there blasting away at the hangar we were frantically trying to defend.

Now, the cool thing about this is that the SU-76 has an open-topped turret... so you just need to get a little elevation on it, and you can then pepper the crew with lead. He hadn't seen me, so I crept around behind, took a steady aim, and BANG.

Owned :XD:

Anyways, point I'm really trying to make here is GET RED ORCHESTRA.

Explosives RAPE in this game.

Stupidly ran into a minefield to pick up that dude's G43.

Surprise nade from around a corner. That's in the map Lyes Krovy - very complex German trench system which the Russians have to assault. After much bloodshed, we finally got in... and I discovered just how deadly nades are in trenches. 0_o

Bahahaha, he was standing guard outside our spawn while his buddies raped our whole team... came up beside him without being spotted and dropped some explosive party favours at his feet then ran >:D And yes, this is one of his limbs on the ground beside him.

Thought you might. :p

Let it be known, the G41 is the best gun in the game (aside from reload time and perhaps mag capacity). It's dead accurate and fires fairly fast, it's awesomely powerful and looks nice.

Compared to your average Source game, possibly. RO is all about on-the-fly tactics, working as a team, and successfully assaulting and defending positions under heavy fire. It's awesome fun, though. That said, I really only like the pure infantry maps...

But RO isn't done with the Source engine. ;)

rossmum

Exactly. I was using the generally fast-paced Source-based shooters like HL2, CS:S and DOD:S as a comparison.

I like a game where I can actually have more than a nanosecond to place my shot, realize that the person I'm shooting is actually an enemy, and pull the trigger, as well as actually keep my crosshair on my target. That's the only reason I still play Halo. Unreal Tournament takes way too much effort to play.

If RO is at or around Halo's pace, I'd buy it. :)

rossmum
December 29th, 2006, 12:22 AM
It's pretty crazy as far as realism goes, making it hard for a new player to hit with anything less than a half a mag or so going out the window first... but if you play your cards right you won't get ambushed too much. Look where the enemy are massing, creep around their flank, and then spray the bastards from behind (or for added lols, stick a 10lb demo charge on one of them and run the hell away).

I've never liked vehicles in any FPS besides Halo, period. They're always way too overpowered or way too underpowered. Usually the former.

rossmum

It's pretty well balanced, I just suck at using them. You can open the hatch to look around if you're not under heavy fire, but it makes it possible for snipers or stray rounds to end your little joyride pretty quick. Once you do come under fire, you can sit back down and close the hatch, looking out through the vision blocks (most of which give you shit all visibility; probably a fair trade-off for safety from snipers). Most tanks have a driver, gunner, and commander position, though some only have driver and commander (who has to perform the job of a gunner, otherwise he spots targets and controls the hull-mounted MG). The hull-mounted MG and the coaxial gun on the turret can shit all over any infantry caught out in the open, but all it takes to wipe out a tank are a few well-placed tank shells (number depends on size of shell, thickness of armour, location it hits and whether it simply careens off the armour or not), a few engine/magazine shots with the PTRD antitank rifle, or a Panzerfaust hit to the sides or rear. Lighter vehicles are easy meat for armour and heavy weaponry, and not as lethal, but can still be an annoyance. All told, it's pretty well done... I'd like it more if the tank turret was controlled with the mouse rather than the movement keys, though.

Sounds like they're pretty nicely done, but another thing that bugs me is Halo is one of the only games with vehicles I've seen that transitions flawlessly between Infantry FP and Vehicle 3P with proper entrance and exit animations. If Red Orchestra has those, I might just have to look into it.

No, they're fine... his middle finger is almost touching the camera, so it looks warped. If you look at the others, they're normal. Also don't forget this is only the UT2004 engine, so they're not very high-poly.

If I had a Mauser Kar98K and a volunteer with a camera, I'd demonstrate myself. :)

I guess that's just part of the biggest failure of 3D graphics. The fact that they're displayed on a 2D screen.

Yeah, that does suck... It'd be interesting to play a 3D game that looks like it's true 3D. Imagine getting jumped by zombies or whatever then XD

I can't imagine it would use all that much processor power, what with everyone spending all their time sneaking around. That's what people usually do in tactical shooters

rossmum
January 14th, 2007, 11:15 PM
No, there usually ends up being a huge battle somewhere with the smart players flanking around and picking guys off from afar.

Or doing what my clanmate Remer does... running into the mosh pit, dropping a satchel or two and laughing maniacally. >_>

rossmum

I knew that would fucking happen. See Reaper, this is why I don't want you doing that in my threads.

Quit it now or I -rep you both (you've already copped like -10 points from me over the last 2 months for continuing with that anyway, Reaper), and my rep counts for a lot because I have so much of the stuff. D:

Anyways, BACK ON TOPIC. Metroid, if you're not too sure on the realism thing... you're about as safe running around in the open in RO as you are in DoD. The difference is that in RO, camouflage actually works if you're up against a similar backing, the community as a whole is great (DoD's is better than Halo or CS but doesn't hold a candle to RO's), and in any case people who are prone to attracting bullets (like me, at the moment) don't have to worry about their internets dignity because RO scores by objective points and kills and displays only the score (no K/D values, though kills aren't that hard to calculate once you find out how the system works). On top of that, it has meaty chunks and loltillery (DoD, unfortunately, lacks both). What's not to like?

Netcode is also incredibly stable. Almost no lead due to lag (on my clan's US server I was pinging 220 and only had to lead about a half foot in front of a guy running side-on to me at almost 200yd., and by that I mean half a foot in game distance, not screen distance). Halo is anything from that to 12 feet. Not to mention that some Russian guys have got stable servers running at well over the game's original player limit, with a 5-10fps framerate hit being the only noteworthy side effect... more than what I can say for similar Halo trials.

Pooky
January 15th, 2007, 04:15 PM
Halo gives me a bad framerate with 16 people... so yeah. I'm probably gonna get both games once I get some money anyway. That's dependent on whether the world quits conspiring to keep me from getting a license and a job

Heh.

If you do get RO, check out the realism unit I'm in, the 20. PanzerGrenadier Division (http://www.20-pzgr-div.com). Out of every gaming clan or unit or whatever I've been a member of, it's the best by far. The guys in it are awesome and will accept anyone so long as they can abide by a few basic rules and be a friendly, contributive member of the community.

Plus, we fucking rape ingame. Our main snipers, Veltman and Krieger, can really fuck the opposition up... it's common knowledge during clan practise never to let Krieger take the sniper rifles :x

Realism... unit?

rossmum
January 23rd, 2007, 01:51 AM
Yeah. As in we don't run around spraying bullets everywhere, bunnyhopping or jump-nading. The whole 'realism' thing makes a lot of people shy away, but it's actually better because if there's one thing the average RO player can't stand, it's CoD whores who run around emptying their PPSh from the hip. Plus we get stuff like EFO matches (Eastern Front Ops), it's basically an interactive campaign run by all the realism clans in which one can 'attack' another (meaning the 'attackers' get to choose map, player numbers, etc.), and the defenders... defend. It's operated on a roster so everyone gets a chance to do both, and although EFO matches are a bit too extreme on the realism for some, they're pretty cool.

Failing that, each new recruit gets a comprehensive training course with all of the main weapon types, so it does wonders for your skills.
