I was wondering, is there any program out there like MSPaint, that supports layers and transparency? I'm looking to do some sprite work, photoshop is too powerful for my needs, and paint lacks a few key features

I'm not that experienced with graphic design (I'm taking an intro class this semester), but the easy-to-use resize and crop features of Paint.net have helped me considerably with the creation of my signature and avatar.
