1)I believe this is the wrong place to ask. It should be in the Tech Forum.
2)I don't know about vista, but here (http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/1566) is a tutorial for XP. The process shouldn't have changed much.

Click on the button that says "Change." It is supposed to say what program it opens with, but if you change it to the .ico, it gives them all the icon image.

Well then you could try to change the registry values or use Yamicsoft's Vista Manager (http://www.yamicsoft.com/vistamanager/index.html), which I believe has a tool for changing the icons for a file type, or try to do what rooster said.

i have tune up utilities and it has an icon changer, but it can only change the most basic file types like .mps or .jpg icons. Is this Yamicsoft's Vista Manager (http://www.yamicsoft.com/vistamanager/index.html) worth the DL?
Where is the change tab? I have general, view and search?
Thanks!

I used to have some autorun.ini file in my PSP so that the regular icon would change to a PSP icon. I don't know if it would help
I read up a bit and a desktop.ini file might work.
This is xFires desktop.ini file:
[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0
NoSharing=0
IconFile=Xfire.exe
IconIndex=0
InfoTip=Xfire - gaming simplifiedIt changes the regular folder image to the xFire icon in C:/Program Files

If you download res hacker then you might be abke to open up the .map and then click on the icon part a change it. but that will probobly only do it for one .map that you open
Res Hacker = Google :)
The icon file for xfire is saved into the .exe, IconIndex=0 is the icon number in the .exe, you can use Res Hacker to change the icon in the .exe, i have done that wiv mine.
