...and Aerowyn, I'm looking for advice. I'm a bit of a hobbyist, and lately I've been thinking of getting into creating an online-based FPS (First Person Shooter. Remember that, now.) I was wondering if anyone here has had good experiences with any. My intentions are to find a nice affordable engine designed mainly for FPSs, with a flexible editing kit, similar to Halo CE if possible, and an available commercial license. All I've come across so far is GarageGame's Torque, but it isn't pre-formatted for the design of FPSs. Please post what you can. Thanks in advance!
P.S. I've seen the Cube and Sauerbraten engines, so don't bother posting about those.

Source. It's free.

But can I redistribute it without paying royalties?

The game?

Did you read the whole thread? I'm looking for an engine that I could sell if I wanted to.

Oh. I just read "online-based FPS" and "engine" and assumed you'd just make the game.
No.

Curses! Foiled again. Suggestions are still welcome.

Focus on a real-life project that you can actually accomplish.

Using an existing engine to create a few maps to play with friends and possibly distribute is entirely within my bounds. Now stop flaming.

Yes, giving you a dose of reality is definitely an insult. Silly me. Be sure to have it effect your schooling and what not.
Just for humor purposes though, what would be the point of creating a game to play with friends when you already have games that you can play with friends already?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the "effect my schooling part", but the dose of reality bit seems a little misplaced. If you took the time to read the first post, you'd have seen that I'm looking for an engine that's easy to use, with an open-ended editing system, similar to Halo CE if possible. You go over to halomods, or halomaps, and you look at some of the crap that anyone can make. Now tell me that it's beyond my ability to make a few levels for the fun of it. How is that beyond my capabilities?

Again, by reading the first post, you'll come across me saying that "I'm a hobbyist". I like having something to do in my spare time. And I enjoy anything that increases my computer literacy. Especially in connection to video games.
Now, are you going to post something helpful, leave, or continue to spam up my topic by telling me what I can't do. Let me guess, you'll choose either the third option, because "you clearly can't back down from an argument you started", or the second, only to later say you were "being the bigger man". You've done nothing useful in this thread, so please, shape up or ship out.

It's not misplaced. You seem like someone who has the hopes and dreams of making "the best game ever!" Despite your ideas might seem sound, translating them by yourself is probably impossible, or will take countless years on a self-learning basis. The first thing you touch doesn't become godly, even if you've had "some" experience with it in the past.

The key word was crap. I hope I don't have to elaborate there.

Then stick to playing them, or join a team that does modding for a game. You want to learn basic experience for what you're talking about then you'd start out small, not as big as possible.

No thank you, I would not like a cup of hyperbole.

You'll find I'm not naive enough to think I could create the next (Insert great game here....Halo 3?). Just something to spend some time once in a while working on. You've blown a small request for advice into a big argument, and despite however you interpreted the nature of this thread, it was still a silly thing to do. I certainly hope you're mature enough not to turn this needless debate into some sort of grudge against myself.

Stop with your hyperbole. If I wanted to target you specifically, you would know, and even then it would just to see what your reaction is. Nothing has been blown out of proportions except what you've led to write. You could've simply stated that this was what you wanted to do and we would've never gotten to this point in the argument, but, instead, when you were faced with a little bit of "hostility," you retaliated in full force.
Now, think about it on the level of rammifications. What do you honestly believe, even on a small level of pursuing this as a sideline hobby, you will accomplish? Seeing as how Source is your best bet for what you want to do, then I would think you've gotten your answer (unless you mistook Emmzee telling you that you can't actually sell the game without paying royalties and didn't see that as actually being able to make your own game and give it out for free, which you CAN do). You'd still need a team though, wouldn't you? And wouldn't your time be better spent joining a team and learning the basics, so when you want to even take on a "small project," you can do it right and you know what you're doing?
I'm guessing you're big on media release, right? Photoshop and what not? Why not learn how to skin? Why not make a hobby out of something you already like doing?

I made my intentions very clear. If you'll look back at page 1 for a moment, you'll see that when you made your post telling me to do something I'm capable of, I told you I wanted to use an engine to make a few maps to play with some friends in. My intentions never changed. You came back persuing the question as to why bother, which, as I've told you before, is mentioned in the first post under "me being a hobbyist". You've finally proved yourself useful, in the form of telling me that I can distribute Source free of charge, albeit in a rather drawn-out and frustrating manner. And that's where the thread ends. I'm gonna go watch Emmzee make fun of cancer-kids.
