For $270 you can get an EVGA nVidia 8800 GTS 320 MB from newegg.

$70 is quite a bit over $200. Sorry, no suggestions for that price range. The 8800GTS still is probably the best choice, spend the extra money.

Probably a X1950XT or two 2600XT's. I agree with the others though, save up the extra $70 :)

oh, if you get that one, be sure to get the drivers from nvidia. the ones on the disk suck hard.

MSI HD2600XT 512MB GDDR4 OC (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127303) would probably do you better than a 8600GTS.

Doubt it... and he did say he was looking for an Nvidia card.
However, I still think you should get the X1950XT, as it will out-perform an 8600GTS in DX9. The only thing it lacks is DX10, but half of the "DX10 Ports" have horrible DX10 performance. (Call of Juarez and Lost Planet for example)

I'd go for the 8600 GTS

2600XT performs better than 8600GTS in terms of DX10 performance.

Exactly, and that HD 2600XT is really cheap on Newegg. Over here in Canada that would translate to $299 at Futureshop even though it should only be at $199 max.

Not to mention 65nm and GDDR4 memory, so it runs cool and doesn't require as much power.

well, unless he has the processor and memory to back it up, it wouldn't really matter. although i agree that the 2600xt would outperform the 8600gts oc, the difference would be marginal.

Any type of Core 2 or AMD64x2 processor would do fine with it.

hope he has good enough memory. that 2600xt is 512 with only 128 on board :/

Wrong. It has 512mb of onboard memory with a bus width of 128bits.

its only single core processor, and 512 MB of ram, (getting upgraded with video card)

You'll be fine with it.

It would be false advertising if this was true, which it isn't. Where did you see that only 128MB is onboard. It has 512MB of onboard and it's on a 128-bit bus, as Xet said.

Wait about 1 or 2 months or so, and the prices on the geforce 8 series will drop.

If he's looking for a $200 there really isn't much point in waiting. If he's around the $500 range then maybe he should wait till December for the new line, but that's irrelevant. Also, if you are a serious gamer I would recommend the 8800 GTS over the 8600, if you can save up the few extra bucks.

That is all you really need to know. If you're not big on losing DirectX 10 features, you can get a Radeon X1950PRO. They're around $200 and have excellent performance in all games.
