First question: You know those videos on youtube where somebody makes a flamethrower simply by filling a supersoaker or other water gun with gas? In my experience gas melts soft plastics, but I'm not sure if it would melt the hard plastic of my water gun. I don't want to ruin it because I just got it. Also, realistically what are the chances of the thing blowing up? What if I shoot it into the flame from far away? I don't want to lose a hand...

The flame will ignite the inside fuel and the pressure will build up causing an explosion of fire, unburned fuel that will soon burn, and burnt plastic. Do not try it unless you want to have burn marks on your body.
